OBJECTIVE: To determine the efficacy of the vaginal wall sling in the management of recurrent stress urinary incontinence (SUI) in an elderly female population.
METHOD: Eighteen elderly female patients (average age 68.4 years) with recurrent stress urinary incontinence were studied with a thorough evaluation including video-urodynamics. Thirteen patients were diagnosed with type III SUI and 5 patients had type II SUI: A description of the technique, first described by Raz, is provided.
RESULTS: Follow-up ranged from six to forty-two months (average 18 months). All patients are completely dry

A prospective study was designed to compare the effects on voice capacities after either suspension microlaryngoscopic surgery or indirect microlaryngostroboscopic surgery. Patients where the clinical diagnosis 'dysphonia due to a benign lesion of the vocal fold' was made, and who could be operated in either way, entered the study. We performed frontalis suspension in 12 patients presenting with essential blepharospasm or "apraxia" of eyelid opening who did not respond sufficiently to botulinum toxin injections. An improvement could be observed in 9 patients. During the follow-up period (4-18 months) the effect of surgical intervention remained stable. As opposed to other surgical procedures (excision of the orbicularis muscle, resection of facial nerve branches), frontalis suspension can be considered as a minimally invasive and even reversible treatment.

In these investigations two types of antigen preparations were used: (i) Whole Antigen (WAg), and (ii) Soluble Antigen (SAg). For immunization, Muramyl Dipeptide (MDP) was employed as an adjuvant. Highest reciprocal antibody titre values were recorded in ELISA and IHA tests from animals immunized by WAg-MDP. Skin reactions in animals sensitized with WAg-MDP combination showed a well developed zone of erythema with induration after 24 hours of intradermal injection. The paper presents our initial experience with endoscopic suspension of the vesical neck, as per the modification introduced by Gittes and based on incorporation through the vaginal mucosa of non-absorbable single-filament sutures. In this way it is feasible to use a simple non-incisive vaginal surgery with minimum morbidity. Good results have been obtained so far in six of the seven patients operated on.
