In vivo imaging of patients with chronic pruritus of unknown origin reveals partial sweat duct obstruction with partial itch resolution upon retinoid treatment.

BACKGROUND: Chronic pruritus of unknown origin (CPUO) is poorly understood and lacks effective treatment options. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to elucidate abnormalities in the sweat apparatus of patients with CPUO, and to assess efficacy and safety of treatment with systemic retinoids. METHODS: An initial case-control study included 20 affected patients and five healthy controls, for whom heat and sweating were induced, either through a standardized exercise protocol or ingestion of hot water. In vivo high-definition optical coherence tomography, whole-body starch-iodine testing, and skin biopsy fo…

Fabrication of an on-demand removable glucose sensor patch based on laser-induced graphitization technology for sweat monitoring in individuals with fragile skin.

Acute kidney injury can cause changes in fluid glucose levels, such as blood, sweat, or tears. However, the skin of vulnerable populations, such as premature infants, is extremely fragile and cannot withstand frequent needle-based blood sampling. Detecting glucose in skin sweat provides a non-invasive new approach. This study utilizes laser-induced graphitization technology and secondary modification of electrodes to efficiently fabricate an enzymatic wearable glucose sensor patch on a flexible substrate on a large scale and at a low cost. Experiments show that the sensor exhibits good sensiti…

Separate and combined blockades of α- and β-adrenergic receptors in forearm sweating induced by adrenergic agents and exercise in the heat in young adults.

The assessment of adrenergic modulation of sweating as assessed via pharmacologic administration of α- and β-adrenergic receptor blockers during exercise has yielded mixed findings. However, the underlying mechanisms for this disparity remain unresolved. We investigated the effects of separate and combined blockade of α- and β-adrenergic receptors on forearm sweating induced by a 30-min moderate-intensity exercise bout (n = 17, protocol 1) and the administration of adrenergic agonists epinephrine and norepinephrine (n = 16, protocol 2) in the heat. Adrenergic receptor blockade was induced via …

Are Thermoregulatory Sweating and Active Vasodilation in Skin Controlled by Separate Nerves During Passive Heat Stress in Persons With Spinal Cord Injury?

BACKGROUND: Sudomotor responses (SR) and active vasodilation (AVD) are the primary means of heat dissipation during passive heat stress (PHS). It is unknown if they are controlled by a single or separate set of nerves. Older qualitative studies suggest that persons with spinal cord injury (SCI) have discordant areas of sweating and vasodilation. OBJECTIVES: To test the hypothesis that neural control of SR and AVD is through separate nerves by measuring SR and vasodilation in persons with SCI to determine if these areas are concordant or discordant. METHODS: Nine persons with tetraplegia, 13 …

Finger sweating levels evaluated by video capillaroscopy system are increased in patients with systemic sclerosis compared to pre-clinical stage patients.

New strategies for early diagnosis and careful follow-up of systemic sclerosis are urgently needed. We unconventionally used a video capillaroscopy system to measure the amount of sweating on finger pads, and investigated its clinical significance. Thirty-three Japanese patients who were diagnosed with typical or pre-clinical stage patients of systemic sclerosis were included in this study. Five healthy subjects were also included. Among twenty-one patients with typical systemic sclerosis that fulfilled ACR/EULAR 2013 classification criteria, seven had increased sweating levels. On the other h…

A Woman in Her 30s With a Past History of HIV Disease Presented With Recurrent Fever, Night Sweats, and Small Bilateral Pulmonary Nodules.

A woman in her 30s presented with recurrent low-grade fever and cough (onset, 1 week). She reported occasional night sweats and weight loss of approximately 20 pounds over the past 4 months. She denied nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or any urinary complaints. Her past medical history was significant for chronic hepatitis C and HIV infection, the latter diagnosed in 2001. She was noncompliant with highly active antiretroviral therapy for more than 4 years and had pneumocystis pneumonia 2 years prior to this presentation. She had a 10-pack per year smoking history and reported active use of cocaine…

Clinical studies of sweat rate reduction by an over-the-counter soft-solid antiperspirant and comparison with a prescription antiperspirant product in male panelists.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with axillary hyperhidrosis have much higher than average sweat rates and are often prescribed anhydrous aluminum chloride (AlCl(3)) solutions. Topical application of these solutions can be irritating to the skin, resulting in poor compliance and lower than desired efficacy. OBJECTIVE: Demonstrate the efficacy of an over the counter "clinical strength" soft-solid antiperspirant using a night time application regimen and compare to a prescription aluminum chloride (6.5%) antiperspirant using male panelists. METHODS: Gravimetric hot room efficacy testing (100 F and 35% …

Inactivation of cardiotrophin-like cytokine, a second ligand for ciliary neurotrophic factor receptor, leads to cold-induced sweating syndrome in a patient.

Ciliary neurotrophic factor (CNTF) receptor controls a pathway supporting the differentiation and survival of a wide range of neural cell ty … n as CRLF1). We have reported mutations in the chaperone soluble receptor CLF, causing cold-induced sweating syndrome (CISS). In this study, we studied the CLC-mutated alleles in a patient suffering from a similar disease. This patient was compound heterozygous for two different CLC mutations. The first allele was inactivated by a stop codon at position …

Task concentration training versus applied relaxation, in combination with cognitive therapy, for social phobia patients with fear of blushing, trembling, and sweating.

Social phobia patients with fear of blushing, trembling, sweating and/or freezing as main complaint (N = 65) were randomly assigned to either task concentration training (TCT) or applied relaxation (AR) both followed by cognitive therapy (CT). Measurements took place before and after wait-list, after TCT or AR (within-test), after CT (post-test), at 3-months and at 1-year follow-up. Effects were assessed on fear of showing bodily symptoms (the central outcome variable), social phobia, other psychopathology, social skills, self-consciousness, self-focused attention, and dysfunctional beliefs. Localization of Na/K-ATPase sites in the secretory and reabsorptive epithelia of perfused eccrine sweat glands: a question to the role of the enzyme in secretion.

Na/K-ATPase sites in both the secretory and reabsorptive epithelia of isolated and microperfused human eccrine sweat glands are localized cytologically. Localization was accomplished through autoradiography of bound 3H-ouabain, a specific inhibitor of the enzyme. Ouabain binding characteristics were determined to ensure maximum specific binding. Enzyme sites are localized only on the basolateral surface of both epithelia in spite of the fact that sodium transport is reversed, i.e., secretory: blood to lumen and reabsorptive: lumen to blood. In view of these findings and in comparison with othe…

Wearable flexible magnetoelastic sensor based on PDMS/chitosan/FeSiB/CNTs composite film for non-invasive real-time monitoring of uric acid in sweat.

Wearable non-invasive sensors enable continuous detection of uric acid in sweat, thereby facilitating the diagnosis of diseases related to renal and hepatic disorders. Nevertheless, the low uric acid content in human sweat and limitations of current sweat sampling strategies pose major challenges to the development of high-efficiency wearable uric acid sensors. Herein, we report a wearable flexible magnetoelastic (ME) sensor structurally integrated with a functional thin film based on PDMS/Chitosan/FeSiB/CNTs for monitoring uric acid in sweat. The integrated microfluidic patch designed in this…

Analysis of human male armpit sweat after fenugreek ingestion: Characterisation of odour active compounds by gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry and olfactometry.

In this study, the strong "maple-syrup" odour which appears after fenugreek ingestion was investigated. Headspace solid-phase microextraction (HS-SPME) was applied to extract volatile odourant compounds from human male armpit sweat samples. Two male volunteers were considered who have similar diet; they had to ingest fenugreek infusion over the same period of time. The HS-SPME extracts obtained were then analysed by gas chromatography coupled either to mass spectrometry (GC-MS) or flame ionisation detection and olfactometry (GC-O). In that latter case, a panel of eight assessors was used, and …
