Patterns of recovery from pain after cesarean delivery.

We know very little about the change in pain in the first 2 months after surgery. To address this gap, we studied 530 women scheduled for elective cesarean delivery who completed daily pain diaries for 2 months after surgery through text messaging. Over 82% of subjects missed fewer than 10 diary entries and were included in the analysis. Completers were more likely to be Caucasian, nonsmokers, and with fewer previous pregnancies than noncompleters. Daily worst pain intensity ratings for the previous 24 hours were fit to a log(time) function and allowed to change to a different function up to 3…

Identifying postpartum intervention approaches to reduce cardiometabolic risk among American Indian women with prior gestational diabetes, Oklahoma, 2012-2013.

INTRODUCTION: Innovative approaches are needed to reduce cardiometabolic risk among American Indian women with a history of gestational diab … mpeting priorities. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest that an intervention that uses the Internet, text messaging, or both and that emphasizes the benefits of delaying disease onset should be tested as a novel, culturally relevant approach to reducing rates of diabetes and cardiovascular disease in this high-risk population.

Caregiver Satisfaction and Effectiveness of Teleconsultation in Children and Adolescents With Migraine During the Ongoing COVID-19 Pandemic.

BACKGROUND: The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and the lockdown measures have forced clinicians across the world to look on telemedicine. Although migraine as such seems an ideal option for telemedicine, a systematic study reviewing feasibility, efficacy, and advantages of current advanced telecommunication technologies in children with migraine is lacking. METHODS: Clinical details of telephonic consultations performed between March 25 and June 4, 2020, including migraine characteristics, analgesic/prophylactic drug regimens, headache frequency/severity/disability, compliance, drug-related/unrela

Testing the feasibility of a mobile technology intervention promoting healthy gestational weight gain in pregnant women (txt4two) - study protocol for a randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Overweight, obesity and excess gestational weight gain (GWG) are associated with negative health outcomes for mother and child in pregnancy and across the life course. Interventions promoting GWG within guidelines report mixed results. Most are time and cost intensive, which limits scalability. Mobile technologies (mHealth) offer low cost, ready access and individually-tailored support. We aim to test the feasibility of an mHealth intervention promoting healthy nutrition, physical activity and GWG in women who begin pregnancy overweight or obese. METHODS/DESIGN: txt4two is a paral

A multilevel clinic- and community-based intervention to increase COVID-19 vaccination among Latinos in San Diego County: Protocol description of the vaccine promotion program.

BACKGROUND: COVID-19 has disproportionately affected minority groups, including Latinos. Since the development of COVID-19 vaccines, effective implementation faced challenges due to multiple factors, necessitating multi-level and multi-sector approaches. This study describes the Vaccine Promotion Program (VPP), a multi-level intervention to increase COVID-19 vaccine uptake among Latinos in clinical and community settings. METHODS: VPP is a double-blind, pragmatic, 12-month cluster-randomized trial in collaboration with a large Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) in San Diego, CA. Ten cli

Stories for change protocol: A randomized controlled trial of a digital storytelling intervention for Hispanic/Latino individuals with type 2 diabetes.

BACKGROUND: Hispanic/Latino adults are disproportionately impacted by type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D). The Stories for Change (S4C) Diabetes digital storytelling intervention promotes T2D self-management among Hispanic/Latino people. We describe the S4C protocol and participant baseline characteristics. METHODS: Study eligibility criteria: Hispanic or Latino, age 18-70 years, ≥1 office visit within a year at a participating clinic, T2D diagnosis for ≥6 months, HbA1c ≥ 8%, and intention to continue care at the recruitment clinic. We used a two-group, parallel randomized controlled trial design

Use of Information and Communication Technology Strategies to Increase Vaccination Coverage in Older Adults: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Coverage rates of routinely recommended vaccines in older adults still fall below the targets established by international and national advisory committees. As a result, related diseases still have a high incidence, morbidity, and mortality. Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) could provide useful tools to improve immunization rates by bringing information directly to the target user at a relatively low cost. The present research aims to systematically review recent literature on interventions applying ICT to improve the uptake of influenza, pneumococcal, COVID-19 and

The impact of IBD on ability to work and study: a patient perspective.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to explore the multifaceted ways in which inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) negatively affects working life and studies. MATERIAL AND METHODS: IBD patients were identified by diagnosis codes from the hospital records of a Finnish University Hospital. Patients were sent questionnaires via mail and text messages. Respondents, being 561 patients, formed the sample. Hospital records and data of medications were combined to questionnaire data. RESULTS: Over a fifth of the patients reported having to change their job due to IBD, whereas a third of the sample had t

Increased incidence of idiopathic paediatric facial palsy during the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic.

BACKGROUND: Bell's palsy is a lower motor neurone facial weakness of unknown aetiology, although reactivation of a virus within the facial nerve has been proposed. METHODS: A prospective study was conducted of Bell's palsy cases presenting to our paediatric ENT unit over a 19-week period, from February to June 2020. Patients were invited for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 antibody testing. A text-message questionnaire was sent to other ENT centres to determine their observational experience. RESULTS: During the study period, 17 children presented with Bell's palsy, compared

Suicide in parachuting: A case report and review of the literature.

Skydiving fatalities are mostly accidental and the result of human errors. However, suicides may be greatly underreported in skydivers. We present the case of a young civilian skydiver who committed suicide by jumping from an altitude of 4000m without activating his chutes. Witnesses reported that the victim had remained in a freefall position until ground impact. Besides an extensive blunt trauma, the autopsy showed an antero-posterior flattening of the body with symmetrical abrasions on its front, which were consistent with a high-energy impact on the ground in a "belly-down" position. Predicting Social Anxiety Treatment Outcome Based on Therapeutic Email Conversations.

Predicting therapeutic outcome in the mental health domain is of utmost importance to enable therapists to provide the most effective treatment to a patient. Using information from the writings of a patient can potentially be a valuable source of information, especially now that more and more treatments involve computer-based exercises or electronic conversations between patient and therapist. In this paper, we study predictive modeling using writings of patients under treatment for a social anxiety disorder. We extract a wealth of information from the text written by patients including their

Optimising a digital parent-based intervention to improve adolescent health risk behaviours in families living in socio-economically disadvantaged communities: findings from the Health4Life Parents & Teens factorial randomised trial.

BACKGROUND: Adolescence is a critical period when health risk behaviours contributing to long-term disease burden emerge. Parent-based interventions show promise, yet engagement is often low and few exist for socioeconomically disadvantaged communities. We applied the Multiphase Optimisation Strategy (MOST) to identify a maximally effective, minimally burdensome digital intervention to support parents to improve adolescent health risk behaviours. METHODS: A 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 factorial randomised trial was conducted with parents of adolescents (aged 11-15 years), living in a disadvantaged area of
