BACKGROUND: Rosai-Dorfman disease (RDD) is a rare histiocytosis which involves principally lymph nodes. Thyroid involvement in RDD is a very rare situation, and lung involvement is even rarer.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 46-year-old woman presenting a painless mass in the right side of the neck and subacute dyspnoea. Computerised tomography (CT) scans of the neck and thorax showed a large thyroid mass causing tracheal stenosis and multiple cystic lesions in both lungs. Subtotal thyroidectomy with a tracheal segment resection and histological analysis confirmed the diagnosis of

A woman in her mid-80's collapsed while home due to a sudden onset of swelling on her neck compromising the airway. She was intubated on-site and brought to the trauma-centre where she was diagnosed with an intrathyroidal bleeding with compression of the trachea. A subacute left sided thyroid lobectomy was performed, giving immediate relief to the displaced and compressed airway. The patient was discharged after 3 days. The final histopathological examination revealed a microfollicular adenoma with extensive bleeding.

Autoimmune encephalitis is caused by immunological reactions showing unconsciousness, agitation, and other neurological symptoms. Autoimmune diseases can be related to autoantibodies, causing encephalitis. These autoantibody-related encephalitides could appear in various clinical courses. As laboratory tests for detecting these antibodies are limited, diagnosis is difficult. Hashimoto's encephalopathy is autoimmune encephalitis caused by antibodies against the thyroid gland. This time, we experienced a case of a 69-year-old man with a chief complaint of subacute progression of amnesia and susp

Background: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has been associated with thyroid dysfunction; however, evidence from primary care settings remains limited. Given that most patients with COVID-19 are managed outside hospital settings, understanding thyroid function changes in real-world primary care is clinically relevant. Methods: This retrospective study included 373 adult outpatients with confirmed COVID-19 and no prior thyroid disease, who were managed in a Family Medicine Clinic in Warsaw between January of 2022 and December of 2024. Thyroid function tests (yielding TSH, fT3, and fT4 level

Cytokines play a crucial role in autoimmune thyroid disease (ATD) through various mechanisms. They are produced in the thyroid by intrathyroidal inflammatory cells, in particular lymphocytes, as well as by the thyroid follicular cells (TFC) themselves and may thus act in a cascade to enhance the autoimmune process (Fig. 1). Cytokines upregulate the inflammatory reaction through stimulation of both T and B cells, resulting in antibody production and tissue injury. In addition, intrathyroidal cytokines induce immunological changes in TFC including enhancement of both major histocompatibility com

Iodine is an essential element for thyroid hormone synthesis. The thyroid gland has the capacity and holds the machinery to handle the iodine efficiently when the availability of iodine becomes scarce, as well as when iodine is available in excessive quantities. The latter situation is handled by the thyroid by acutely inhibiting the organification of iodine, the so-called acute Wolff-Chaikoff effect, by a mechanism not well understood 52 years after the original description. It is proposed that iodopeptide(s) are formed that temporarily inhibit thyroid peroxidase (TPO) mRNA and protein synthe

BACKGROUND: Thyroid-stimulating antibodies (TSAb) are known to be responsible for hyperthyroidism in Graves' disease (GD). The conventional methods to measure TSAb depend on cell-based assays that require cumbersome procedures and a sterilized tissue culture technique. The aim of the present study was to develop a ready-to-use cell-based assay for measuring TSAb activity without requiring sterilized conditions.
METHODS: We developed a new assay kit using a frozen Chinese hamster ovary cell line expressing the thyroid-stimulating hormone receptor, cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP)-gated ca

The aim of this study was to compare two two-step assays, a new coated plate (CP) ELISA assay (TRAb ELISA) using purified porcine TSH-receptors (pTSH-R) and a coated tube assay (CT) using recombinant human TSH-receptors (hTSH-R) (DYNO(R) test TRAK human). The same serum samples were used for the determination by both assays in patients with 100 untreated Graves' disease (GD), 30 silent thyroiditis (ST), 10 subacute thyroiditis (SAT) and 87 Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT). In sera from patients with untreated GD, pTBII and hTBII were positive in nearly all cases except the same one, whereas the th

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is increasingly shown to be a multisystem disorder with long-term complications, including endocrine system complications. The thyroid gland is also susceptible, as it contains ACE2 receptors, making it exposed to both direct viral damage and autoimmune-mediated dysfunction. Recent reports document the various thyroid complications that persist well after the acute infection phase. This systematic review investigates the long-term thyroid complications in individuals with a history of SARS-CoV-2 infection. A comprehensive literature search across several dat

OBJECTIVES: The interferon-alpha (IFN-alpha) therapy for HCV hepatitis may exacerbate or induce underlying thyroid disorders. Besides viral factors, the human leukocyte antigen (HLA) may be an independent risk factor.
METHODS: We evaluated fifteen patients with HCV chronic hepatitis during a period of 40 months. At the enrollment, all the patients were negative for thyroid disorders, excluding one patient with subclinical hypothyroidism. Eleven patients received IFN-alpha therapy. The HLA system was examined in every patient, evaluating antigens (n=40) of locus A, B and Cw and alleles (n=19)

A 50-year-old woman who had undergone lung lobectomy because of lung adenocarcinoma presented with thyrotoxicosis, neck swelling, and cervical lymphadenopathy one month after the operation. The total serum triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4) levels were markedly elevated to 514 ng/dL and 26.4 microg/dL, respectively, and serum thyrotropin (TSH) was suppressed to less than 0.005 microU/mL. Although the thyroid gland had been normal before surgery, chest computed tomography (CT) scan revealed a markedly enlarged thyroid gland only 1 month after surgery. 123I uptake for 24 hours was suppress

SUMMARY: Anaplastic thyroid cancer (ATC) is the type of thyroid cancer that has the worst prognosis. It usually presents as a rapidly growing cervical mass that generates compressive symptoms. Its association with thyrotoxicosis is rare. A 76-year-old woman, with no contributory history, presented with a 3-month course of fast-growing cervical tumor, associated with tenderness, cough, and weight loss. Physical examination revealed goiter, localized erythema, and a painful and stone tumor dependent on the right thyroid lobe. Due to the malignant findings of the thyroid ultrasound, the patient u

BACKGROUND: Amiodarone-induced thyrotoxicosis (AIT) develops in 3% of amiodarone-treated patients in North America. AIT is classified as type 1 or type 2. Type 1 AIT occurs in patients with underlying thyroid pathology such as autonomous nodular goiter or Graves' disease. Type 2 AIT is a result of amiodarone causing a subacute thyroiditis with release of preformed thyroid hormones into the circulation.
OBJECTIVES: To review the literature and present an overview of the differentiation between and management of type 1 and type 2 AIT.
METHODS: PubMed, the Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied

Hashimoto's encephalopathy is an immune-mediated disorder characterized by acute or subacute encephalopathy related to increased anti-thyroid antibodies. Clinical manifestations of Hashimoto's encephalopathy may include stroke-like episodes, altered consciousness, psychosis, myoclonus, abnormal movements, seizures, and cognitive dysfunction. Acute cognitive dysfunction with convulsion as initial clinical manifestations of Hashimoto's encephalopathy is very rare. We report a 65-year-old man who developed acute onset of cognitive decline and convulsion due to Hashimoto's encephalopathy.

Background: Thyroid eye disease (TED), or Graves' orbitopathy, is the most common extra-thyroidal manifestation of Graves' disease, but it has only rarely been reported after SARS-CoV-2 vaccination. Autoimmune thyroid disease, including subacute thyroiditis and Graves' disease, has been described following COVID-19 vaccination; we present a case series of TED occurring shortly after different COVID-19 vaccines to provide clinical data on this potential safety signal. Case presentation: We describe five women (mean age 47 years; range 27-69) who developed TED 3-20 days after COVID-19 vaccinatio

Several reports have been published on the anti-TSH receptor antibody in putative autoimmune thyroid disorders using a radioreceptor assay. We have carried out correlative studies between the ability of serum immunoglobulins to displace radiolabeled TSH from the thyroid plasma membrane receptor [TSH-displacing activity (TDA)] and that of actual stimulation of the human thyroid gland [human thyroid-stimulating activity (hTSA)] in Graves' and other thyroid diseases and in control subjects. TDA was assayed by the use of a radioligand technique, while the activation of adenylate cyclase in human t
