[Study of color perception using a new color test and desaturated panel D 15 in normal subjects and diabetics].

The authors used two tests (the Lanthony's New Color Test and the desaturated Panel D 15 test) to evaluate color vision in 235 subjects (235 eyes) of which 80 normal and 155 diabetic (85 with background retinopathy and 70 without retinopathy, as demonstrated by fluorescein angiography). The diabetic patients with maculopathy or macular oedema, with mixed or proliferative retinopathy, or with any form of advanced degenerative retinopathy were excluded from this study. The New Color Test was performed in accordance with Lanthony's standardized method, applying only the separation phase (to quant

[An atypical case of subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE), (with special reference to psychiatric and psychological evaluations)].

An atypical case of subacute sclerosing panencephalitis is described, with particular reference to its psychiatric and psychological aspects in the light of the neurological and laboratory data: slow-gamma electrophoresis of the spinal fluid, periodic delta signs in the EEG over about 6 yr, 1/160 blood titre of anti-measles virus antibodies. The history displayed an ingravescent dementia course and the patient's continuing survival for more than 11 yr makes the case the longest recorded in the literature. Both the psychiatric-psychological and neurological symptoms had occurred in distinct sta

Perceptions of a Plea Agreement in Cases of Teacher and Adolescent Student Sexual Assault.

An estimated 90% of reported sexual abuse cases result in a plea agreement. The present study investigated the perception of plea agreements involving a teacher-adolescent student child sexual assault case. A 2 (teacher gender: male or female) x 2 (student gender: male or female) x 2 (punishment type: probation or jail) within-participant design was used with participant gender included as a between-participant factor. Perceptions of the plea agreement served as the dependent variables. Participants (N = 52; 48.1% male, 51.9% female) each read the eight vignettes in a random order and then rat

Frontoparietal cortex mediates perceptual transitions in bistable perception.

During bistable vision, perception oscillates between two mutually exclusive percepts despite constant sensory input. Greater BOLD responses in frontoparietal cortex have been shown to be associated with endogenous perceptual transitions compared with "replay" transitions designed to closely match bistability in both perceptual quality and timing. It has remained controversial, however, whether this enhanced activity reflects causal influences of these regions on processing at the sensory level or, alternatively, an effect of stimulus differences that result in, for example, longer durations o

Temporal weighting functions for interaural time and level differences. VI. Effects of pulse rate on modulated envelopes.

Temporal weighting functions were measured for binaural lateralization of amplitude-modulated trains of narrowband clicks. When the envelope was one rise-fall cycle of a 20-Hz sinusoid and the interclick interval was 2 ms, temporal weighting functions revealed strong onset dominance in the form of maximal weight on the initial click, despite its low amplitude (-36 dB) relative to the envelope peak. Onset dominance was greater for lateralization based on interaural time differences compared to interaural level differences (ILDs), and was also reduced when the interclick interval was lengthened

The role of cerebellum in timing processing: A contingent negative variation study.

Time management is an important aspect of human behaviour and cognition. Several brain regions are thought to be involved in motor timing an … e interval after the cathodal and sham sessions. These results point to a role of the cerebellum in time perception. In particular, the cerebellum seems to regulate temporal interval discrimination for second and sub-second ranges.

Anodal tDCS Over the Left Frontal Eye Field Improves Sustained Visual Search Performance.

Monotonous and repetitive tasks cause vigilance, or sustained attention decrement, which possibly leads to irreparable accident consequences in the aerospace and nuclear industry. Buffering the decrement of vigilance in visual search tasks is essential for cognitive enhancement and ergonomic research. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of anodal transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) applied to the left frontal eye field (FEF) to improve the performance of the sustained visual search. Twenty-seven healthy participants received anodal and sham tDCS of 2 mA for 28.8 min and comple

Non-invasive neurostimulation modulates processing of spatial frequency information in rapid perception of faces.

This study used high-frequency transcranial random noise stimulation (tRNS) to examine how low and high spatial frequency filtered faces are processed. Response times were measured in a task where healthy young adults categorised spatially filtered hybrid faces, presented at foveal and peripheral blocks, while sham and high-frequency random noise was applied to a lateral occipito-temporal location on their scalp. Both the Frequentist and Bayesian approaches show that in contrast to sham, active stimulation significantly reduced response times to peripherally presented low spatial frequency inf

Attentional capture by dynamic cues.

Attention orients to an object that abruptly onsets, because the object's appearance alters the visual scene. In this report, the question was whether there would, similarly, be attentional prioritization of an existing object that changes its dynamic status. Attention may be deployed immediately to the object because its new dynamic status, potentially, also could alter the visual environment. This report focused on the capture capacity of an object--made up of four spots--that abruptly began rotating, thereby endowing it with two dynamic features: motion-onset, apparent when the object trans

Selection of preconfigured cell assemblies for representation of novel spatial experiences.

Internal representations about the external world can be driven by the external stimuli or can be internally generated in their absence. It has been a matter of debate whether novel stimuli from the external world are instructive over the brain network to create de novo representations or, alternatively, are selecting from existing pre-representations hosted in preconfigured brain networks. The hippocampus is a brain area necessary for normal internally generated spatial-temporal representations and its dysfunctions have resulted in anterograde amnesia, impaired imagining of new experiences, a

Dynamic prototypicality effects in visual search.

In recent studies, researchers have discovered a larger neural activation for stimuli that are more extreme exemplars of their stimulus class, compared with stimuli that are more prototypical. This has been shown for faces as well as for familiar and novel shape classes. We used a visual search task to look for a behavioral correlate of these findings regarding both simple geometrical shapes and more complex, novel shape classes. The latter stimulus set enabled us to control for the physical properties of the shapes, establishing that the effects are solely due to the positions of the particul

Neural networks engaged in milliseconds and seconds time processing: evidence from transcranial magnetic stimulation and patients with cortical or subcortical dysfunction.

Here, we review recent transcranial magnetic stimulation studies and investigations in patients with neurological disease such as Parkinson's disease and stroke, showing that the neural processing of time requires the activity of wide range-distributed brain networks. The neural activity of the cerebellum seems most crucial when subjects are required to quickly estimate the passage of brief intervals, and when time is computed in relation to precise salient events. Conversely, the circuits involving the striatum and the substantia nigra projecting to the prefrontal cortex (PFC) are mostly impl

Further experiments on the relationship between hippocampus and orientation following phase-shift in homing pigeons.

Following a clock- or phase-shift of the light dark cycle, hippocampal lesioned pigeons (Columba livia) consistently display a larger deviation in vanishing bearings away from the homeward direction compared to intact birds; an effect never seen in unshifted birds. In Experiment 1, control and hippocampal lesioned pigeons oriented similarly after being held 1 week under artificial lighting in the absence of a phase-shift. Housing under artificial light by itself does not result in between group orientation differences. In Experiment 2, control and hippocampal lesioned pigeons oriented equally

Both coloured overlays and coloured lenses can improve reading fluency, but their optimal chromaticities differ.

Some individuals read more fluently when the text is coloured: i.e., when coloured sheets of plastic (overlays) are placed upon the page, or when coloured lenses are worn. Overlays provide a surface colour whereas lenses mimic a change in the colour of a light source. The neural mechanisms that underlie colour constancy ensure that the chromaticity of overlays and lenses is processed differently by the visual system. We investigated (1) the relationship between the optimal colours of overlays and lenses, and (2) how reading rate is affected by a particular colour in overlays and lenses. In 100

Representation of a voice onset time continuum in primary auditory cortex of the cat.

The representation of voice onset time (VOT) for 197 single units in cat primary auditory cortex was studied for a /ba/-/pa/ continuum in which VOT was varied in 5-ms steps from 0 to 70 ms. The effect of stimulus intensity, characteristic frequency of the neurons, and age of the animals was investigated. The minimum VOT represented in onset responses to both the voiceless and voiced parts of the sound (a "double-on" response) was dependent on overall stimulus level. An interaction was found between the efficacy of the burst in evoking neural activity and the size of the subsequent response to

Temporal aspects of depth contrast.

Depth contrast is a contrasting change in the depth of a feature that results from changes in the disparities of other objects in the field of view, even though the disparity of the original feature remains unchanged. Depth contrast effects decrease during continuous viewing of the stimuli and may disappear altogether after several minutes unless the disparities of the inducing features change with time. This fading occurs whenever the inducing features have constant disparity, whether they are stationary or oscillating laterally. Depth contrast effects occur whenever the inducing features are

Egocentric localization changes following unilateral strabismus surgery.

We measured spatial localization (using an open-loop pointing task) monocularly in each eye of eight patients undergoing unilateral strabismus surgery. Most of these patients had some degree of binocular vision. We found that, in most cases, changes in spatial localization produced by surgery on the operated eye paralleled those found in the other eye, both in magnitude and duration. Unilateral surgery can have central effects on egocentric localization.
