The treatment of sequelae for burns or other loss of perioral tissues is complex due to the site where they occur, its functional importance, and social and esthetic aspects. Functional consequences of burns to this area are cutaneous retraction and a lack of skin that can lead to an inability to close the oral aperture, compromising the provision of dental hygiene and intubation procedures. The aim of the present publication was to evaluate the efficacy of chin, labial and jugal cutaneous expansions for the treatment of perioral lesions and lesions of the lower half of the face in our retrosp

Pioneers such as Tanzer and Brent have established the foundations of microtia reconstruction using an autogenous costal cartilage framework. The framework and its skin coverage are the two limiting factors in ear reconstruction. At the present time autogenous rib cartilage and mastoid skin are still first choice materials for most surgeons. They have the combined advantages of well-matched texture and colour. To reconstruct a symmetrical, accurate, prominent auricle and minimise as much as possible the chest wall deformity caused by rib cartilage harvesting, we set out to improve our techniqu

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The diverse inflammatory response found in the liver of patients with autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) is well established, but identification of potentially pathogenic subpopulations has proven enigmatic.
APPROACH AND RESULTS: We report herein that CD69+ CD103+ CD8+ tissue-resident memory T cells (TRM ) are significantly increased in the liver of patients with AIH compared to chronic hepatitis B, NAFLD, and healthy control tissues. In addition, there was a significant statistical correlation between elevation of CD8+ TRM cells and AIH disease severity. Indeed, in patients with

Graves' disease (GD), an autoimmune process involving thyroid and orbital tissue, is associated with lymphocyte abnormalities including expansion of memory T cells. Insulin-like growth factor receptor-1 (IGF-1R)-bearing fibroblasts overpopulate connective tissues in GD. IGF-1R on fibroblasts, when ligated with IgGs from these patients, results in the expression of the T cell chemoattractants, IL-16 and RANTES. We now report that a disproportionately large fraction of peripheral blood T cells express IGF-1R (CD3+IGF-R+). CD3+IGF-1R+ T cells comprise 48 +/- 4% (mean +/- SE; n = 33) in patients w

A multiresolution statistical method for identifying clinically normal tissue in digitized mammograms is used to construct an algorithm for separating normal regions from potentially abnormal regions; that is, small regions that may contain isolated calcifications. This is the initial phase of the development of a general method for the automatic recognition of normal mammograms. The first step is to decompose the image with a wavelet expansion that yields a sum of independent images, each containing different levels of image detail. When calcifications are present, there is strong empirical e

A series of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) studies established a PD-1hiCXCR5-CD4+ T-cell subset that was coined peripheral helper T (Tph) cells. CXCL13 production is a key feature of Tph cells and may contribute to the formation of tertiary lymphoid structures (TLS) in inflamed tissues. In addition, Tph cells provide help to B cells in situ as efficiently as follicular helper T (Tfh) cells, and these features would implicate Tph cells in the pathogenesis of RA. Subsequent studies have revealed that Tph cells are involved in various human diseases such as autoimmune diseases, infectious diseases, an

Intra-macrophage bacterial infections cause significant morbidity and mortality in both the developed and developing world. Protective host immune responses to these infections initially requires the activation and expansion of pathogen-specific CD4 Th1 cells within lymphoid tissues and subsequent relocation of these effector cells to sites of infection. After entering infected tissues, the elicitation of Th1 bactericidal activity can be triggered by cognate or non-cognate signals that are delivered by locally infected antigen-presenting cells and innate cells. However, the contribution of non

Segmental loss of a peripheral nerve has been a challenging reconstructive problem. Management of the nerve gap has been accomplished classically with nerve grafting. However, autogenous nerve grafts are not always available for bridging large nerve gaps, and clinical results of large nerve cable grafts have been disappointing. Newer techniques concentrate on nerve lengthening with different methods. Tissue expansion of peripheral nerves has been producing promising results. Since the introduction of the Ilizarov external fixator, much attention has turned to limb-lengthening techniques and st…

The majority of the clinico-pathological variability observed in patients harboring a repeat expansion in the C9orf72-SMCR8 complex subunit (C9orf72) remains unexplained. This expansion, which represents the most common genetic cause of frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD) and motor neuron disease (MND), results in a loss of C9orf72 expression and the generation of RNA foci and dipeptide repeat (DPR) proteins. The C9orf72 protein itself plays a role in vesicular transport, serving as a guanine nucleotide exchange factor that regulates GTPases. To further elucidate the mechanisms underlying

Human chondrocytes isolated from articular cartilage (AC) lesions as an alternative cell source to the standard nonweight-bearing notch biopsy site may hold clinical potential for cell-based therapies. The aim was to characterize human AC lesion site chondrocytes, compare them to notch chondrocytes, and evaluate their redifferentiation potential after monolayer expansion and subsequent three-dimensional (3D) alginate bead culture. Lesion chondrocytes from knee joints of 20 patients with International Cartilage Repair Society (ICRS) grade 3 and 4 cartilage defects were analyzed ex vivo or cultu

BACKGROUND: Assessment of the growth of bony orbit in children with blind microphthalmia is essential to its management. In this study, variables were measured to evaluate the development of the bony microphthalmic orbits after treatment with self-inflating hydrogel expanders.
METHODS: This is a retrospective study with an interventional case series. Thirteen pediatric patients with congenital unilateral blind microphthalmia who had undergone tissue expansion with hydrogel expanders and computed tomography (CT) scanning before and after operation were included in the study. The orbital volume…

Antigen-presenting cells (APCs) integrate signals emanating from local pathology and program appropriate T cell responses. In allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (alloHCT), recipient conditioning releases damage-associated molecular patterns (DAMPs) that generate proinflammatory APCs that secrete IL-12, which is a driver of donor Th1 responses, causing graft-versus-host disease (GVHD). Nevertheless, other mechanisms exist to initiate alloreactive T cell responses, as recipients with disrupted DAMP signaling or lacking IL-12 develop GVHD. We established that tissue damage signals

Meningioma is the most frequently observed primary brain tumour in cats. Usually, it is associated with an intracranial expansion with consequent brain compression, oedema and brain herniation. Typical features of feline intracranial meningiomas are hyperostosis of the adjacent bone and intratumoral mineralisation. We describe a 13-year-old male neutered cat with a 1-year history of behavioural change. At clinical and neurological examination the cat showed signs consistent with right-sided forebrain lesion. Magnetic resonance images showed a right-sided extra-axial contrast enhancing mass in
