Optical Coherence Tomography-Based Scattering Properties of Retinal Vessels in Glaucoma Patients.

PURPOSE: Clinical trials have demonstrated that retinal blood flow deficiencies are present in patients with open-angle glaucoma (OAG). We introduce a method for facilitating retinal vessel analysis: The intensity of the distal shadow of vessels in optical coherence tomography (OCT) caused by the scattered signal is analyzed, compared between healthy subjects and OAG patients and correlated with OCT angiography (OCT-A) flow density. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We recruited 80 patients with diagnosed OAG (mean age 63.4 ± 13.2 years) and 80 healthy age-matched control subjects for comparison, and 20

Optical Coherence Tomography in Patients with Chronic Migraine: Literature Review and Update.

Migraine is a chronic disease characterized by unilateral, pulsating, and often moderate-to-severe recurrent episodes of headache with nausea and vomiting. It affects approximately 15% of the general population, yet the underlying pathophysiological mechanisms are not fully understood. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a safe and reproducible diagnostic technique that utilizes infrared wavelengths and has a sensitivity of 8-10 μm. It can be used to measure thinning of the retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) in some neurological disorders. Although ophthalmologists are often the first speciali

Optical coherence tomography in the diagnosis of actinic keratosis-A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a real-time non-invasive imaging tool, introduced in dermatology in the late 1990s. OCT uses near-infrared light impulses to produce images which can be displayed in cross-sectional and en-face mode. The technique has been used to image skin diseases especially non-melanoma skin cancer including actinic keratosis (AK). Morphological characteristics of AK can be visualized in OCT images and can be used for diagnosis as well as disease monitoring. METHODS: A systematic review of original papers on AK and OCT was performed on 31.03.16 and 24.10.1

Familial Incomplete Punctal Canalization: Clinical and Fourier Domain Optical Coherence Tomography Features.

Incomplete punctal canalization is a form of punctal dysgenesis with membranous noncanalization and can be confused with punctal agenesis. The clinical and diagnostic features are known; however, familial incomplete punctal canalization has not been reported earlier. A family with 3 affected members is presented in this series with similar incomplete punctal canalization and nasolacrimal duct obstructions. After membranotomy and endoscopic dacryocystorhinostomy with bicanalicular intubation, all of them are free of epiphora at last visit.

Optical coherence tomography for the diagnosis and monitoring of idiopathic intracranial hypertension.

The objectives of the study were to investigate the value of optical coherence tomography in detecting papilledema in patients with idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH), a disease which is difficult to monitor and which can lead to permanent visual deficits; to analyze retinal changes over time. In this non-interventional case-control study, spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) was used to analyze the retinal and optic nerve head (ONH) morphology of 21 patients with IIH and 27 age- and sex-matched healthy controls over time. We analyzed the ONH volume using a custom-made

Evaluation of Optical Coherence Tomography to Detect Elevated Intracranial Pressure in Children.

IMPORTANCE: Detecting elevated intracranial pressure in children with subacute conditions, such as craniosynostosis or tumor, may enable timely intervention and prevent neurocognitive impairment, but conventional techniques are invasive and often equivocal. Elevated intracranial pressure leads to structural changes in the peripapillary retina. Spectral-domain (SD) optical coherence tomography (OCT) can noninvasively quantify retinal layers to a micron-level resolution. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether retinal measurements from OCT can serve as an effective surrogate for invasive intracranial pr

En face optical coherence tomography findings in a case of Alport syndrome.

Alport syndrome is a rare hereditary disease that is associated with retinal abnormalities such as dot-and-fleck retinopathy and temporal macular thinning. The main pathophysiological process of Alport syndrome is loss of the collagen network in the basement membrane. However, the alterations in each retinal layer have not been fully evaluated. In the case presented here, we evaluated the retina of a patient with Alport syndrome using en face optical coherence tomography (OCT). The findings suggested that the primary alterations occur in the internal limiting membrane and the retinal pigment e

Glaucoma Increases Retinal Surface Contour Variability as Measured by Optical Coherence Tomography.

PURPOSE: We investigated the feasibility of glaucoma detection by measuring retinal surface contour variability (RSCV) using optical coherence tomography (OCT). METHODS: The peripapillary region in one eye of each participant was scanned over an 8 × 8 mm area with a swept source OCT prototype. The retinal surface contour was sampled at approximately 1.5- to 3.5-mm radius circles centered on the optic nerve head. The RSCV is defined as the average log value within a middle spatial frequency band of the Fourier transform to the elevation profile of the inner retinal surface. The spatial frequen

A case of recurrent unstable angina - Insight from optical coherence tomography imaging.

Intimal tear is a rare cause of ACS and is angiographically indistinguishable. OCT provides unprecendented insight to the mechanism of ACS with its near tissue level definition. This is a case of unstable angina with non-significant RCA lesion. OCT showed intimal tear/flaps with evidence of thrombi, thus clinching the diagnosis.

[The new findings of high myopia by swept-source optical coherence tomography].

The fundus disease of high myopia, one of the main reasons leading to visual impairment, includes different types of the retinal, choroidal and scleral changes, and in particular the macular and optic disc lesions. Due to technical limitations, it is relatively difficult to study the characteristics of the sclera and the choroid in humans in vivo. The swept-source optical coherence tomography, with the long wave swept laser as a light source, has less sensitivity roll-off with the tissue depth, which makes it possible to check the choroid and the sclera. The recent studies of the characteristi

Intraoperative optical coherence tomography for assessing human lymph nodes for metastatic cancer.

BACKGROUND: Evaluation of lymph node (LN) status is an important factor for detecting metastasis and thereby staging breast cancer. Currently utilized clinical techniques involve the surgical disruption and resection of lymphatic structure, whether nodes or axillary contents, for histological examination. While reasonably effective at detection of macrometastasis, the majority of the resected lymph nodes are histologically negative. Improvements need to be made to better detect micrometastasis, minimize or eliminate lymphatic disruption complications, and provide immediate and accurate intraop
