Optical Coherence Tomography-Derived Excavation Index and Structure-Function Damage in Glaucoma.

PRCIS: The Excavation Index is a novel OCT-based parameter that quantifies optic nerve head excavation, shows independent associations with RNFL thickness and the lamina cribrosa curvature index, and demonstrates sensitivity to early structural changes in glaucoma. PURPOSE: Glaucomatous optic neuropathy is characterized by progressive deformation of the lamina cribrosa (LC) and the scleral canal, leading to optic disc (OD) excavation and visual field (VF) loss. This study proposes the Excavation Index (EI), a novel optical coherence tomography-based parameter designed to quantify the OD excav

Optical Coherence Tomography in Understanding Neurodegeneration in Epilepsy - A Cross-sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Even with improvements in epilepsy diagnosis and treatment, it is still difficult to comprehend the underlying structural alterations in the brain linked to epilepsy. A noninvasive imaging method that produces high-resolution pictures of tissue microstructure is optical coherence tomography (OCT). OBJECTIVES: The study's objective was to evaluate OCT changes in people with epilepsy (PWE) compared to healthy control patients and examine how these changes relate to the type of epilepsy, duration, abnormal imaging, and anti-seizure medication use. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-sect

Imaging Features of Herpetic Interstitial Keratitis by Anterior Segment Optical Coherence Tomography.

PURPOSE: Herpes simplex virus (HSV) and varicella zoster virus (VZV) are known causes of chronic and recurrent interstitial keratitis. Determination of active corneal inflammation is important for appropriate management. This study aimed to investigate features of clinically active herpetic interstitial keratitis (HIK) by anterior segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT). METHODS: Twenty-seven patients with active HIK (17 with HSV, 10 with VZV) and AS-OCT imaging were retrospectively identified. Five patients also had stromal scarring (SS), presumably from prior HIK episodes. An addition

Optical Coherence Tomography Angiography-Derived Peripapillary Vessel Density Findings in Multiple Sclerosis.

Background/Objectives: Multiple sclerosis (MS)-related optic neuritis (ON) results in thinning of the peripapillary nerve fiber layer (pRNFL) which tends to be temporal quadrant-predominant. Optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) enables visualization of the retinal vasculature. Prior studies have shown reduced peripapillary vessel density (VD) in MS but data on the quadrantic pattern of peripapillary VD loss are limited. Our objective was to investigate the pattern of OCTA-derived peripapillary VD reduction in MS. Methods: People with MS (PwMS) and healthy controls (HC) underwent opt

Optical Coherence Tomography in Huntington's Disease-A Potential Future Biomarker for Neurodegeneration?

Huntington's disease (HD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder for which, until now, only symptomatic treatment has been available. Lately, there have been multiple ongoing clinical trials targeting therapeutic agents for preventing disease onset or slowing disease progression in HD. These studies are in constant need of reliable biomarkers for neurodegeneration in HD. In recent years, retinal biomarkers have attracted significant attention in neurodegenerative disorders. Likewise, optical coherence tomography (OCT) is being evaluated as a potential biomarker in HD. In this article, we

Imaging of human airways by endoscope-compatible dynamic microscopic optical coherence tomography.

INTRODUCTION: Microscopy is a cornerstone for diagnostics in lung disease but was traditionally restricted to biopsies and explanted tissue. Microscopic optical coherence tomography (mOCT) produces images with microscopic resolution without the need for exogenous markers. As recently demonstrated in excised mouse tissue, the combination with dynamic contrast (dmOCT) generates high contrast images of airway tissue. DmOCT therefore has the potential to be used for virtual biopsies in humans. METHODS: To assess the potential of dmOCT combined with endoscopic imaging, we scanned excised human lun

High-Resolution Optical Coherence Tomography Correlates of Peau d'Orange in Pseudoxanthoma Elasticum.

IMPORTANCE: Pseudoxanthoma elasticum (PXE) is a rare inherited disorder marked by progressive calcification of Bruch membrane (BrM). Characteristic retinal features, such as peau d'orange and continuously calcified BrM (also called coquille d'œuf), reflect disease severity but lack reliable in vivo cross-sectional imaging correlates. OBJECTIVE: To identify high-resolution optical coherence tomography (HR-OCT) correlates of peau d'orange and continuously calcified BrM in patients with PXE. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This prospective case-control study was conducted at the Department o

Optical coherence tomography in preoperative workup and visual outcome of pituitary macroadenomas.

BACKGROUND: Pituitary macroadenomas often cause progressive visual loss secondary to chiasmatic or optic nerve compression. At present, there are no precise preoperative evaluation methods capable of predicting postoperative visual outcome. The evaluation of the peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) and macular thicknesses by optical coherence tomography (OCT) can provide parameters for the severity of optic neuropathy, with possible prognostic value. METHODS: 30 patients were enrolled in this prospective study. Adult patients with sellar preoperative magnetic resonance imaging sugge

Anterior segment optical coherence tomography in conjunctival ocular surface disorders - A review.

Ocular surface disorders involving the conjunctiva have a myriad of clinical presentations requiring considerable clinical acumen for an accurate diagnosis. There can also be an overlap in clinical features, resulting in a diagnostic dilemma. Over the last few years, anterior segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT), by its ability to provide an optical biopsy of the tissue of interest, has evolved as an important diagnostic device. Besides complimenting clinical diagnosis, it also helps in quantifying the response to topical chemotherapy and aids as a follow-up tool. In this review, we h

Advantages of hybrid intravascular ultrasound-optical coherence tomography system in clinical practice.

BACKGROUND: While the hybrid intravascular ultrasound-optical coherence tomography (IVUS-OCT) imaging system offers theoretical advantages for enhanced characterization of vascular morphology and histopathology through multimodal integration, its clinical efficacy lacks systematic validation. We conducted a comprehensive comparative analysis of this novel hybrid imaging modality against conventional single-modality OCT and IVUS systems, aiming to establish an evidence-based foundation for its clinical implementation and broader adoption in interventional cardiology practice. OBJECTIVE: To eva
