Reactive positioning of pathologically migrated tooth following non-surgical periodontal therapy.

While contemporary periodontics has witnessed the continued emergence of sophisticated techniques to resolve esthetic concerns through various periodontal procedures, frequently the early stages of periodontal diseases are best treated with non-surgical periodontal therapy. This short communication presents a case of reactive positioning of pathologically migrated anterior tooth following non-surgical periodontal therapy.

Tooth Loss in Periodontitis Patients-A Risk Factor for Mild Cognitive Impairment: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Periodontal disease and tooth loss have been long suggested as risk factors of mild cognitive impairment. The underlying mechanisms could be systemic chronic inflammatory mediators, direct pathologic challenge to the nervous system, malnutrition and/or loss of neurosensory stimulation input causing brain atrophy. This review aimed to examine the existing literature studies linking the effect of periodontal disease and tooth loss on the development of mild cognitive impairment. METHODS: A systematic review using PEO was conducted. Three electronic databases, namely Embase, Medline

Oral microbiome and health.

The oral microbiome is diverse in its composition due to continuous contact of oral cavity with the external environment. Temperatures, diet, pH, feeding habits are important factors that contribute in the establishment of oral microbiome. Both culture dependent and culture independent approaches have been employed in the analysis of oral microbiome. Gene-based methods like PCR amplification techniques, random amplicon cloning, PCR-RELP, T-RELP, DGGE and DNA microarray analysis have been applied to increase oral microbiome related knowledge. Studies revealed that microbes from the phyla Firmic

Evaluating the validity of probing attachment loss as a surrogate for tooth mortality in a clinical trial on the elderly.

Most periodontal trials are based on the assumption that the superior treatment, as judged by short-term intangible changes in probing attachment levels (the surrogate), is also the treatment most likely to affect tooth mortality. This assumption is valid if: (1) the surrogate is informative about tooth mortality, and (2) the surrogate captures a substantial proportion of the treatment effect on tooth mortality (e.g., > 50% or 75%). The goal of this study was to evaluate whether both conditions were satisfied in a randomized controlled trial (RCT) of elders at high risk for dental diseases. Th

i-Dent: A virtual assistant to diagnose rare genetic dental diseases.

Rare genetic diseases are difficult to diagnose and this translates in patient's diagnostic odyssey! This is particularly true for more than 900 rare diseases including orodental developmental anomalies such as missing teeth. However, if left untreated, their symptoms can become significant and disabling for the patient. Early detection and rapid management are therefore essential in this context. The i-Dent project aims to supply a pre-diagnostic tool to detect rare diseases with tooth agenesis of varying severity and pattern. To identify missing teeth, image segmentation models (Mask R-CNN,

Parameter on acute periodontal diseases. American Academy of Periodontology.

The American Academy of Periodontology has developed the following parameter on the treatment of acute periodontal diseases. Patients should be informed about the disease process, therapeutic alternatives, potential complications, expected results, and their responsibility in treatment. Consequences of no treatment should be explained. Failure to treat acute periodontal diseases appropriately can result in progressive loss of periodontal supporting tissues, an adverse change in prognosis, and could result in tooth loss. Given this information, patients should then be able to make informed deci

Association between dental diseases and oral hygiene care and the risk of vertebral fracture: a nationwide cohort study.

UNLABELLED: Periodontal disease and increased missing teeth were associated with incident vertebral fractures. In contrast, professional dental cleaning and frequent tooth brushing, was associated with a lower risk of vertebral fracture. Better oral hygiene care attenuated the risk associated with dental diseases. PURPOSE: To investigate the association between oral health and the risk of vertebral fractures. METHODS: We included 2,532,253 individuals aged ≥40 years who underwent the Korean National Health Insurance Service health examinations in 2008 and followed up until December 31, 2017.

Oral health and oromotor function in rare diseases--a database study.

The aim was to study oral health and oromotor function in individuals with rare diseases. A disease is defined as rare when it affects no more than 100 individuals per million population and leads to a marked degree of disability. An affected nervous or musculoskeletal system, cognitive impairment, neuropsychiatric disorders and craniofacial malformations are common in rare diseases and may all be risk factors for oral health and oromotor function. In 1996-2008, 1,703 individuals with 169 rare diseases, aged 3-67 years, answered a questionnaire about general health, oral health and orofacial f

Nonsyndromic bilateral multiple impacted supernumerary mandibular third molars: a rare and unusual case report.

A supernumerary tooth is that which is present additionally to the normal series and can be found in any region of the dental arch. An impacted tooth is defined as the one which is embedded in the alveolus, so that its eruption is prevented, or the tooth is locked in position by bone or the adjacent teeth. The occurrence of multiple supernumerary teeth in only one patient in the absence of an associated systemic condition or syndrome is considered as a rare phenomenon. The occurrence of supernumerary teeth in the lower molar region is rare. A prevalence of less than 2% of cases occurring in th

Bioengineering the Junctional Epithelium in 3D Oral Mucosa Models.

Two-dimensional (2D) culture models and animal experiments have been widely used to study the pathogenesis of periodontal and peri-implant diseases and to test new treatment approaches. However, neither of them can reproduce the complexity of human periodontal tissues, making the development of a successful 3D oral mucosal model a necessity. The soft-tissue attachment formed around a tooth or an implant function like a biologic seal, protecting the deeper tissues from bacterial infection. The aim of this review is to explore the advancements made so far in the biofabrication of a junctional ep
