Cone-beam computed tomography evaluation of periodontal and bone support loss in extraction cases.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to evaluate, in particular, whether bone resorption occurred at the extraction sites of a group of patients under orthodontic treatment, and, in general, whether extraction treatment predisposes patients to a greater degree of root resorption. METHODS: The study group comprised 12 class II division 1 malocclusion patients who underwent orthodontic treatment and extraction, and the control group comprised 10 class II division 1 patients who underwent orthodontic treatment without extraction. In both groups, treatments were carried out by the same operator

Exploring the effect of Er, Cr: YSGG laser combined with GBR on osteogenesis at extraction sockets in rats with severe periodontitis via the Wnt/β-catenin pathway.

Alveolar bone defects following tooth extraction in severe periodontitis pose significant clinical challenges. This study evaluates the synergistic osteogenic effect of Er, Cr: YSGG laser combined with guided bone regeneration (GBR) in rat extraction sockets and explores the underlying Wnt/β-catenin pathway mechanism. Fifty Sprague-Dawley rats were randomized into five groups (n = 10/group): Control (extraction only), Laser (Er, Cr: YSGG laser irradiation only), GBR (Bio-Oss bone graft + barrier membrane), Laser+Bone Graft (laser irradiation + Bio-Oss without membrane), and Laser + GBR (laser

Are There Differences in the Causes and Complications of Mandibular Third Molar Extraction in Older Patients Compared to Younger Patients?

BACKGROUND: Although most impacted third molars (ITMs) are extracted in the teens and early 20s, some undergo extractions after their 40s. It is unclear whether the reasons for extraction, the degree of impaction, and complications differ in patients in an older age group compared with a younger age group. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to measure the association between age and 1) reason for extraction and 2) postoperative complications. STUDY DESIGN, SETTING, SAMPLE: This was a retrospective cohort study of patients who had undergone surgical extraction of at least one mandibular I

Effect of Sagittal Root Position, Angle, and Bone Thickness on Peri-implant Tissue Phenotype and Bone Level in Socket Shield Technique: A Retrospective Case Series.

There were only a few studies investigating the effect of sagittal root position (SRP), sagittal root angle (SRA), and buccal bone thickness (BBT) on peri-implant tissues using the socket shield technique (SST). This retrospective case series aimed to evaluate the SRP, SRA, and BBT in socket shield cases and examine the effect of these anatomical factors on the peri-implant tissue phenotype and bone level. Data from 27 patients (14 women, 13 men) treated with SST in the maxillary esthetic region between July 2019 and September 2021 were included. Clinical indices (modified plaque and bleeding

Socket preservation.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

Socket preservation maintains bone volume post-extraction in anticipation of an implant placement or fixed partial denture pontic site. This procedure helps compensate for the resorption of the facial bone wall. Socket preservation should be considered when implant placement needs to be delayed for patient or site-related reasons. The ideal healing time before implant placement is six months. Socket preservation can reduce the need for later bone augmentation. By reducing bone resorption and accelerating bone formation it increases implant success and survival. Biomaterials for socket grafting

Treatment of an avulsed maxillary permanent central incisor replaced by autotransplantation of a mandibular premolar: 14-year follow-up.

AIM: To present the 14 year follow-up of a case in which an avulsed permanent maxillary central incisor was replaced by autotransplantation of a mandibular premolar. SUMMARY: A mandibular premolar (Moorrees' stage 3) was transplanted into the space left by an avulsed permanent maxillary central incisor after a delay of 3 months. Recall examination 14 years after transplantation revealed a normal periodontal architecture with absence of infection, ankylosis or progressive resorption. The transplantation of a premolar is seen as a promising method to replace a lost permanent tooth and to restor

Floating retained root lesion mimicking apical periodontitis.

A case of a retained root tip simulating apical periodontitis on radiographic examination is described. The retained root tip, originating from the left lower first molar, floated under the left lower second premolar apical region mimicking apical periodontitis. It appeared as an ill-defined periapical radiolucency containing a smaller radiodense mass on radiograph. The differential diagnosis included focal sclerosing osteomyelitis (condensing osteitis) and ossifying fibroma. Upon exicisional biopsy, a retained root associated with granulation tissue was found. After 1-year follow-up, the pati

Clinical Outcomes of rhBMP-2-Loaded Collagen Sponge for Alveolar Ridge Preservation: A Pilot Study.

OBJECTIVES: Alveolar bone resorption following tooth extraction poses a significant clinical challenge. While various ridge preservation techniques exist, limitations remain. Recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-2 (rhBMP-2) delivered via an absorbable collagen sponge (ACS) has shown promise in bone augmentation. This pilot randomized controlled trial aimed to evaluate the efficacy of ACS combined with rhBMP-2 for alveolar ridge preservation in maintaining ridge dimensions after tooth extraction. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This pilot randomized controlled trial enrolled 11 participants wit

Longitudinal clinical and radiographic evaluation of severely intruded permanent incisors in a pediatric population.

Intrusion is defined as the axial dislodgment of the tooth into its socket and is considered one of the most severe types of dental trauma. This longitudinal outcome study was undertaken to evaluate clinically and radiographically severely intruded permanent incisors in a population of children and adolescents. All cases were treated between September 2003 and February 2008 in a dental trauma service. Clinical and radiographic data were collected from 12 patients (eight males and four females) that represented 15 permanent maxillary incisors. Mean age at the time of injury was 8 years and 9 mo

Relationship between the buccal bone plate thickness and the healing of postextraction sockets with/without ridge preservation.

In 48 postextraction sites, sockets were grafted with bovine bone mineral plus collagen membrane (test) or had spontaneous healing (control). After 4 months, horizontal ridge width reduction was 0.71 mm in the test group and 4.04 mm in the control group, while vertical ridge loss was 0.58 mm and 1.67 mm, respectively. No correlation was found between the thickness of the buccal bone wall and the alveolar bone loss in the test group, while an inverse correlation was found in the control group. Ridge preservation compensated for postextraction alveolar ridge resorption irrespective of the buccal

N-butyl-2-cyanoacrylate (NBCA) tissue adhesive as a haemostatic agent in a venous malformation of the mandible.

Cyanoacrylate tissue glue has many uses. We describe a case involving a 27-year-old man with a low-flow venous malformation that affected the right side of his face including the mandible. After extraction of the lower right eight, torrential haemorrhage was successfully arrested using N-butyl-2-cyanoacrylate (NBCA) glue. We think that it may be of use not only in the management of patients with vascular malformations, but also in the treatment of recalcitrant haemorrhage after dentoalveolar surgery.

Zygomatic bone graft for oral-antral communication closure and implant placement.

The roots of molar and premolar maxillary teeth are often very close to the floor of the maxillary sinus. As a result, extraction of these teeth can leave an oral-antral communication or lead to a fistula that requires treatment. A woman with an oral-antral communication secondary to extraction of a maxillary molar is presented. The communication was closed by means of a bone graft harvested from the wall of the sinus (zygomatic bone). After 3 months, 2 dental implants were placed, one in the pterygoid area and the other with parasinusal angulation. Rehabilitation followed in the form of a scr
