A case of latent syphilis presented with unilateral cataract, which developed most probably as a complication of syphilitic cyclitis which he had during the secondary stage of the disease. Blood VDRL was reactive at 1: 32, but CSF was normal. Aqueous humor and the extracted lens material did not contain any Treponema palfidum.

Histology of ulcus durum with regional simple lymphadenitis and of condyloma latum was presented. Inflammatory lymphoplasmocytic infiltration included eosinophilic leukocytes in both cases. Syphilitic granulomatous lymphadenitis with conspicuous productive perilymphadenitis has been lasting about 1 month. Treponemas in histological section were found only in condyloma latum.

This study evaluated the performance of manual rapid plasma reagin (RPR) and automated AIX1000 RPR tests for the diagnosis of syphilis. Manual RPR showed a 3% reactive result compared with 5.8% for the automated test mainly because of RPR reactive results with low titers not confirmed by Treponema pallidum particle agglutination.

In a study carried out in Gabon, antibodies against the treponema were looked for in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in 13 children with active congenital syphilis (presence of specific IgM antibodies) and in 7 children with positive serologic reactions reflecting transplacental passage of maternal antibodies. We describe congenital syphilis in a newborn whose mother had secondary syphilis diagnosed during pregnancy and received a single penicillin dose. Molecular methods detected an extremely low Treponema pallidum load in the mother but higher load in the neonate. Our findings support using molecular methods for detecting vertical T. pallidum transmission.

HIV coinfection added diversity and changed the natural history of syphilis as a systemic infection. We present a rare case of subacute hypophysitis and panhypopituitarism due to an early active neurosyphilis in a previously unknown HIV coinfected patient.

A case study of a 22-year-old male with periumbilical, postprandial pain, partially relieved by antacids is presented. Abnormalities demonstrated on upper-gastrointestinal series and a positive FTA-ABS suggested gastric lues. This diagnosis was confirmed by demonstrating spirochetes in gastric mucosa, both by silver impregnation and fluorescent techniques specific for Treponema pallidum.

A case is reported of a retroperitoneal sympathic nodes ganglioneuroma in a newborn with classic early inborn syphilis involving practically all systems of the viscera, skin, placenta. Some peculiar morphological features of the tumour are described. The presentation of syphilitic aortitis is often atypical and available serological tests are non-specific. The diagnostic gold standard remains direct identification of microorganisms in tissue. We present a case of syphilitic aortitis that presented as a mediastinal mass and report the use of polymerase chain reaction for Treponema pallidum to diagnose syphilitic aortic disease.

Pregnancy is associated with false-positive treponemal and nontreponemal screening test results. We present 5 pregnant women who had reactive treponemal screening and nontreponemal test results but nonreactive Treponema pallidum- particle agglutination test result. Reliance on treponemal screening tests may result in misdiagnosis and unnecessary treatment, unless a specific treponemal test is performed.

Nonimmune hydrops fetalis occurred secondary to a syphilitic infection. Ultrasonographic evaluation and cordocentesis were used to confirm the antenatal infection. An IgM antibody specific for Treponema pallidum wall antigen (anti-47-kDa) was used to document the fetal infection. High-dose intravenous penicillin was administered in an attempt to achieve adequate fetal levels.

Four hundred strains of oral bacteria were tested for their susceptibility to spiramycin. Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans and most species of Lactobacillus were resistant to the antibiotic. All strains of cariogenic Streptococcus mutans and most strains of bacterial species implicated in adult chronic periodontitis (Bacteroides gingivalis, B. intermedius, and Treponema denticola) were susceptible to spiramycin.

PURPOSE: To present an atypical case of syphilis that presented with findings concerning for endocarditis and valsalva retinopathy.
METHODS: History and clinical examination of 42-year-old white man who presented to the emergency department with acute onset vision changes associated with gastrointestinal symptoms, otalgia, and constitutional symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Neurosyphilis is an infection of the brain or spinal cord caused by Treponema pallidum. In the third phase of syphilis involving the central nervous system it may manifest in a widespread dysfunctions including psychiatric manifestations being often underestimated in the differential diagnosis.
