Biological effects of two structurally contrasting PCB congeners (coplanar 77 and non coplanar 153) were investigated by measuring the induction of CYP1A immunopositive protein (CYP1A IPP) in the pyloric caeca and the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) by amoebocytes in the common sea star Asterias rubens. CYP1A IPP was quantified using a specially designed ELISA which uses competitive binding between sea stars and trout CYP1A IPPs. Only the coplanar congener had a significant effect on the two considered biological responses. Intensity of the effects was dose-dependent. However, the

A new species from a yet undescribed group of small monotactic amoebae was isolated from a cage with farmed rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss). Artificial salinization of the original water sample to 18‰ was required to recognize and isolate this amoeba, whereas in cultures with a salinity level corresponding to freshwater, the amoebae were in an encysted state. The studied amoeba is closely related to the clade of strains isolated from the internal tissues of various fish: the liver of tench (Tinca tinca), the liver of carp (Cyprinus carpio), and the kidney of freshwater stinging catfish (He

Diphyllobothrium latum infections in 4 young Korean men detected from 2008 to 2012 are presented. Three were diagnosed based on spontaneously discharged strobila of the adult worm in their feces, and 1 case was diagnosed by finding the worm at colonoscopy examination in a local clinic. The morphologic characteristics of the gravid proglottid and eggs were consistent with D. latum. All patients were treated with praziquantel 15 mg/kg, and follow-up stool examinations were done at 2 months after the medication. The main clinical complaints were intermittent gastrointestinal troubles such as indi

The selection of an experimental animal model is of great importance in the study of bacterial virulence factors. Here, a bath infection of zebrafish larvae is proposed as an alternative model to study the virulence factors of Aeromonas hydrophila. Intraperitoneal infections in mice and trout were compared with bath infections in zebrafish larvae using specific mutants. The great advantage of this model is that bath immersion mimics the natural route of infection, and injury to the tail also provides a natural portal of entry for the bacteria. The implication of T3SS in the virulence of A. hyd

Rising temperature leads to reduced oxygen solubility and therefore increases the risk of exposure to harmful hypoxic condition for fish in their natural aquatic environments and in aquaculture. The goal of this study was to determine whether acclimation to warmer temperature can improve high-temperature hypoxia tolerance in fish, using sibling diploid and triploid brook charr as the experimental model. Triploid fish are used for aquaculture and fisheries management because they are sterile, but they are known to have reduced thermal and hypoxia tolerance compared to conventional diploids. Fis

Actively spawning male Arctic char, Salvelinus alpinus, release immunoreactive F-prostaglandins into the water that attract ovulated females and elicit spawning behaviour. To investigate a possible role played by the olfactory system, we determined the sensitivity and specificity of the char to prostaglandins by the electro-olfactogram (EOG) using a newly devised stimulatory apparatus. Of 18 prostaglandins tested, PGF(2)alpha and two synthetic analogues, 16,16-dimethyl-PGF(2)alpha and U-46619, were detected at threshold concentrations of 0.5-1.0 x 10(-11) M, and at a concentration of 10(-8) M

The fine structure and opsin immunocytochemistry of the pineal and parapineal organs of the salmonid fish Salvelinus alpinus, the landlocked Arctic charr, were studied and compared with the retina in various developmental stages, from prehatching to two-month-old. For opsin immunocytochemistry two polyclonal antibovine rhodopsin and the monoclonal antichicken opsin antibodies OS-2 (detecting blue and green pigments) and OS-1 (detecting green and red pigments) were used. Histologically, the pineal organ consists of nervous tissue like that of the retina. It is composed of photoreceptor pinealoc

Diphyllobothrium latum infection in human is not common in China and only 15 cases have been reported since 1927. We document a case of Diphyllobothrium latum infection caused by the ingestion of raw fish in a 23-year-old woman in Dalian (Liaoning Province), and diphyllobothriasis latum in China is briefly reviewed. The patient experienced abdominal discomfort for about 6 months with a history of discharging proglottids in the feces. The morphologic characteristic of the gravid proglottids and eggs were identified as that of Diphyllobothrium latum. The patient was treated with pumpkin seed pow

Until 2012, a total of 48 cases of diphyllobothriasis had been reported in Korea, all of which were morphologically identified as Diphyllobothrium latum. However, some of these specimens were analyzed by nucleotide sequencing of the mitochondrial cox1 gene, which showed that all were D. nihonkaiense, not D. latum. After that, 3 further cases of diphyllobothriasis were confirmed as D. nihonkaiense. In the present study, 3 new cases of D. nihonkaiense were detected from 2011 through 2013. The hosts were infected through consumption of salmonid fishes, such as the trout or salmon, and 2 of them e

The broad fish tapeworm, Diphyllobothrium latum, is an exotic species in both Chile and Argentina, and until now, its copepod host has remained unknown in South American waters. The objective of this study was to identify calanoid copepod species that may be intermediate hosts for D. latum in Lake Panguipulli, Chile. In this lake, the highest levels of infection by this tapeworm occur in the introduced rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss. Of the 2 calanoid copepods found in Lake Panguipulli, Diaptomus diabolicus and Boeckella gracilipes, only D. diabolicus became infected on experimental exposu

Host-parasite interactions are influenced by both abiotic and biotic factors. While abiotic drivers, particularly temperature, have received considerable attention in recent years due to global climate change, the role of biotic factors remains comparatively underexplored. The malacosporean parasite Tetracapsuloides bryosalmonae (Tb), which causes proliferative kidney disease in salmonids, is a well-documented example, where elevated temperature and eutrophication have been shown to intensify disease prevalence and severity. In this study, we investigated whether freshwater sponges, known for

Arctic char Salvelinus alpinus is an important cultural and subsistence resource for Inuit communities. Muscular infections by microsporidia were diagnosed for the first time in Arctic char originating from 2 different lakes in Nunavik (Quebec, Canada). The consumption of these infected fish was associated with digestive tract disorders in people. To better characterize microsporidiosis in these char populations, a cross-sectional study was conducted on 91 fish. The microsporidium was classified as a member of the Microsporidium collective genus by morphological evaluation and phylogenetic ana

Concentrations of mercury (Hg) have increased slowly in landlocked Arctic char over a 10- to 15-year period in the Arctic. Fluxes of Hg to sediments also show increases in most Arctic lakes. Correlation of Hg with trophic level (TL) was used to investigate and compare biomagnification of Hg in food webs from lakes in the Canadian Arctic sampled from 2002 to 2007. Concentrations of Hg (total Hg and methylmercury [MeHg]) in food webs were compared across longitudinal and latitudinal gradients in relation to delta(13)C and delta(15)N in periphyton, zooplankton, benthic invertebrates, and Arctic c

The capacity of adult mammalian gustatory and olfactory receptor cells to regenerate and make synaptic reconnections provides examples that may be useful in initiating replacement of other kinds of sensory receptor cells. The sensory code for taste quality may not be degraded by taste receptor cell turnover because axons probably recouple to the appropriate type of new receptor cell by axon-receptor cell affinity. Experiments on the development and regeneration of taste receptor cells suggest that they regenerate and turn over by recapitulating the late but not the early steps in taste bud dev

Using antisera specific for the beta subunits of two distinct coho salmon gonadotropins, GTH I and GTH II, an immunocytochemical study of rainbow trout and Atlantic salmon pituitaries was done. Cells which immunostained with anti-GTH I beta were distributed in the periphery of the glandular cords of the proximal pars distalis (PPD), in close association with somatotrophs. On the other hand, cells immunostained with anti-GTH II beta were located in the central parts of the glandular cords of the PPD. Neither the GTH I-producing nor the GTH II-producing cells stained with antisera against chum s

Polydeoxyribonucleotides (PDRNs) are a family of DNA-derived drugs with a molecular weight ranging from 50 to 1500 kDa, which are mainly extracted from the sperm cells of salmon trout or chum salmon. Many pre-clinical and clinical studies have demonstrated the wound healing and anti-inflammatory properties of PDRN, which are mediated by the activation of adenosine A2A receptor and salvage pathways, in addition to promoting osteoblast activity, collagen synthesis, and angiogenesis. In fact, PDRN is already marketed due to its therapeutic properties against various wound healing- and inflammatio

In this study, we describe the complete mitochondrial genomes of Gyrodactylus brachymystacis and Gyrodactylus parvae infecting rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) and the invasive topmouth gudgeon (Pseudorasbora parva), respectively. The two circular genomes have a common genome organization found in other Gyrodactylus species. Comparative analyses of mitochondrial genomes from six Gyrodactylus species were carried out to determine base composition, codon usage, transfer RNA and ribosomal RNA genes, major non-coding regions, and nucleotide diversity within the genus. We also provide the first

Piscirickettsia salmonis is a well-established intracellular pathogen of farmed Atlantic salmon around the world. The bacterium has also been detected from a number of other hosts including lumpfish (Cyclopterus lumpus), seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax) and rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss). In February 2025, increased mortality was observed in a population of turbot, Scophthalmus maximus, farmed in Norway. Macroscopic signs of disease included stomach mucosa bleedings. Piscirickettsiosis was diagnosed based on histopathological findings including rickettsia-like inclusions immunostaining posi

Atrial natriuretic factor (ANF) stimulates accumulation of cyclic GMP in a photosensitive organ, as evidenced for the first time in cultured trout pineals. Stimulation was rapid (within a few min), dose-dependent, and stronger in organs cultured in darkness than in those cultured under light. After 30 min in the dark, (i) cyclic AMP levels were slightly increased at 10(-7) mole/l of ANF, (ii) cyclic GMP and cyclic AMP increased dramatically after inhibition of the phosphodiesterases by isobutylmethylxanthine (IBMX), (iii) ANF and IBMX effects were more than additive on cyclic GMP, (iv) pertuss

The skin mucosa of fish is exposed to significant challenges from infectious disease agents due to continuous exposure to the aqueous environment. Interestingly, bony fish have evolved to express a unique IgT, which is absent in terrestrials, that appears to play a predominant role in the mucosal-associated lymphoid tissue of the rainbow trout. Nevertheless, in other IgT-producing fish, it is unclear whether IgM or IgT is primarily responsible for protection against infections of cutaneous tissue. Here, we show that grouper IgM appears quickly within the skin following challenge by the marine
