Various aspects associated with anergy to tuberculin were investigated in a total of 75 tuberculous cattle. Forty-six (59%) had single lesions and 32 (41%) had multiple lesions. Forty-three (55.1%) had lesions in the lungs or associated lymph nodes and 23 (29.5%) showed multiple involvement of these tissues. Nine anergic cattle had generalised tuberculosis. This brief communication describes the successful treatment of acute systemic anaphylaxis in a wild-born but captive infant western lowland gorilla (Gorilla gorilla gorilla) in the Republic of Congo. The infant demonstrated signs of acute respiratory distress, lingual swelling, and reaction to intradermal tuberculin, given 55 hr earlier. Details of the treatment with steroids, anesthetic induction, and i.v. epinephrine are all reported, and potential antigens that may have initiated the anaphylactic shock are discussed.

As part of a countrywide program of tuberculin testing of 7th graders, 10,133 children were examined in the Tel Aviv area over the 3-year period, Septemer 1991-June 1994. Of these, 655 were from families recently arrived from the former Soviet Union (I), and 9478 from long-time resident families of Israel (L). The response of peripheral blood leucocytes to PPD was studied in vitro by means of the leucocyte migration test, using Mantoux-positive and -negative subjects. The migration of leucocytes from 83% of the positive subjects was significantly inhibited when a concentration of 100 μg PPD/ml was used in the chambers. Lingual tuberculosis presenting as macroglossia in a 20-year-old woman has been reported. The histopathologic picture was similar to lupus vulgaris and the intradermal tuberculin test showed a strongly positive vesiculobullous reaction after forty-eight hours. No active internal focus of tubercular infection could be detected. The patient responded well to antituberculous chemotherapy. The relative lack of symptoms suggest that the enlargement had been a slow process resulting from the lodging of bacilli in the tongue.

A 50-year-old man was treated with excisional surgery for an asymptomatic inguinal spermatic cord mass. The lesion was proved to be tuberculous, and there was no apparent coexisting active disease elsewhere in the body. In addition to an intraoperative frozen-section examination, clinical findings of a strongly positive tuberculin skin test and normal erythrocyte sedimentation rate are considered to be helpful in establishing the diagnosis of a tuberculoma arising in either the scrotal or inguinal position.
