Giant cell carcinoma of the urinary bladder : Clinicopathologic analysis and oncological outcomes.

We present the clinicopathological features of 23 cases of the giant cell subtype of urothelial carcinoma, a rare subtype of bladder cancer recognized in the current World Health Organization classification of urological tumors. Histologically, the architectural pattern of the tumor varied from infiltrating to the solid expansile pleomorphic tumor with giant, bizarre, anaplastic cells. Typical or atypical mitotic figures were frequently present in all cases. Between 10 and 30% of the tumor had a giant cell component. All cases were associated with conventional high-grade urothelial carcinoma,

Urachal and Nonurachal Adenocarcinomas of the Urinary Bladder: A Comprehensive Genomic Profiling Study.

PURPOSE: Although both urachal (U) and nonurachal (NU) bladder adenocarcinomas (adenoCas) share several histologic similarities, they differ in location and sometimes in therapeutic options. We analyzed the differences in genomic alterations (GAs) between these tumor entities, with the aim of identifying potential therapeutic targets for clinical trials. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Overall, 133 U and 328 NU adenoCas were analyzed. Hybrid capture-based comprehensive genomic profiling (CGP) was performed to evaluate all classes of GA. Germline status of GA was predicted using a validated somatic-ger

Dysbiosis in Human Urinary Microbiota May Differentiate Patients with a Bladder Cancer.

Recent interest in noninvasive diagnostic approaches has highlighted the potential of urinary microbiota as a novel biomarker for bladder cancer. This study investigated the urinary microbiota of 30 bladder cancer patients and 32 healthy controls using a specific NGS protocol that sequences eight hypervariable regions of the 16S rRNA gene, providing detailed insights into urinary microbiota composition. The relative abundance of microbial compositions in urine samples from cancer patients and healthy controls was analyzed across various taxonomic levels. No notable differences were highlighted

Urinary Neurotrophin Levels as Potential Biomarkers for Overactive Bladder: A Prospective Study.

BACKGROUND: Overactive bladder (OAB) is an issue in the field of urology that is known for causing symptoms like urges to urinate frequently during the day and even at night (known as nocturia). Nerve growth factor (NGF) and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) play a vital role in the growth and operation of nerve cells in the body. New studies are indicating a connection between these neurotrophins and OAB; As such this research project was undertaken to explore how levels of NGT and BDNF in urine might be related to the presence of OAB in individuals. METHODS: This investigation employ

Genetics of urinary bladder paragangliomas: a multi-center study of a Chinese cohort.

PURPOSE: Pheochromocytomas and paragangliomas (PPGLs) exhibit the highest degree of heritability among all human tumors, yet the genetics of urinary bladder paragangliomas (UBPGLs) remains poorly understood. The present study aims to examine the characteristics of a cohort of Chinese patients with UBPGLs, focusing particularly on genetics. METHODS: The study included 70 Chinese patients with UBPGLs from 15 centers in China, 240 patients with non-head and neck PGLs (non-HNPGLs) outside the urine bladder, and 16 Caucasian patients with UBPGLs. Tumor DNA samples were sequenced by next generation…

Denonvilliers' fascia as a potential nerve-course marker for the female urinary bladder.

OBJECTIVES: This study investigated the relationship between Denonvilliers' fascia (DF) and the pelvic plexus branches in women and explored the possibility of using the DF as a positional marker in nerve-sparing radical hysterectomy (RH). METHODS: This study included eight female cadavers. The DF, its lateral border, and the pelvic autonomic nerves running lateral to the DF were dissected and examined. The pelvis was cut into two along the mid-sagittal line. The uterine artery, deep uterine veins, vesical veins, and nerve branches to the pelvic organs were carefully dissected. RESULTS: The

Manifestation of Spontaneous Rupture of the Urinary Bladder in Pregnancy: A Systematic Review of the Literature.

Spontaneous rupture of the urinary bladder (SRUB) during pregnancy is a potentially fatal event that necessitates immediate surgery. The aim of this systematic review is to determine the symptoms, causes, associated factors, and prognosis of SRUB in pregnancy. We searched the literature from inception until December 2022 using the Cochrane Central Register, PubMed, EMBASE, ProQuest, Scopus, and Google Scholar. Articles not in English and those unrelated to the topic were excluded. The JBI Critical Appraisal Checklist for case reports was employed for the risk of bias assessment. The search str…

Risk determination for upper urinary tract damage in children with neuropathic bladder.

AIM: Neuropathic bladder dysfunction (NBD) or neurogenic lower urinary tract dysfunction occurs as a result of a lesion at any level of central nervous system. The most common aetiology of NBD in children is abnormal development of spinal column. These defects cause neurogenic detrusor overactivity which contributes to detrusor-sphincter dysfunction and results in lower urinary tract symptoms such as incontinence. One of the more progressive and insidious, at the same time preventable result of neuropathic bladder is upper urinary tract deterioration. It is vital to aim reduction in bladder pr

Clear cell adenocarcinoma of the urinary bladder: a case report and review of literature.

The most common histological type of urinary bladder cancer is urothelial carcinoma (UC). Clear cell adenocarcinoma (CCA) of the urinary bladder is a rare histologic subtype of adenocarcinoma in the urinary tract. The tumor primarily affects women and has histomorphological features resembling CCA of the female genital tract (or Müllerian origin). Clear cell adenocarcinoma consists of cells with abundant clear cytoplasm, arranged in solid, glandular, or tubulocystic patterns. Patients typically present with gross hematuria, dysuria, and discharge. In this study, we report a case of a 50-year-o…

Stratification of neurogenic bladder risk in spina bifida using the urinary peptidome.

Neurogenic bladder poses a major morbidity in children with spina bifida (SB), and videourodynamic studies (VUDS) are used to stratify this risk. This small-scale pilot study utilized current mass-spectrometry-based proteomic approaches to identify peptides or proteins in urine that may differentiate children at high risk of developing renal complications from a neurogenic bladder. Twenty-two urine samples of which nine had high bladder pressure storage that put the upper urinary tract at risk, while 13 with a lower risk for renal compromise were analyzed. More than 1,900 peptides across all 2

Prolonged Survival Following Treatment of Histiocytic Sarcoma of the Canine Urinary Bladder.

Plant diseases occurring across wild and crop plants present modelling and management challenges. Wild plant and crop pathosystems differ in ecological structure, evolutionary dynamics and responsiveness to human intervention. At the interface, pathogens may spill over, spill back, persist or evolve, shaped by host diversity, dispersal processes and landscape connectivity. The potential importance of factors including pathogen dispersal, host life history and spatial configuration are examined through a qualitative comparison of case studies: Puccinia graminis, Phakopsora pachyrhizi, Xylella f

BoNT/A in the Urinary Bladder-More to the Story than Silencing of Cholinergic Nerves.

Botulinum neurotoxin (BoNT/A) is an FDA and NICE approved second-line treatment for overactive bladder (OAB) in patients either not responsive or intolerant to anti-cholinergic drugs. BoNT/A acts to weaken muscle contraction by blocking release of the neurotransmitter acetyl choline (ACh) at neuromuscular junctions. However, this biological activity does not easily explain all the observed effects in clinical and non-clinical studies. There are also conflicting reports of expression of the BoNT/A protein receptor, SV2, and intracellular target protein, SNAP-25, in the urothelium and bladder. T

Correlation between urinary symptoms and urodynamic findings: Is the bladder an unreliable witness?

OBJECTIVE: The role of urodynamics as the gold standard to investigate bladder function has recently been questioned. We aimed to evaluate the agreement of lower urinary tract symptoms and urodynamic diagnosis and to build predictive models. STUDY DESIGN: Patients who underwent urodynamics for pelvic floor disorders between 2008 and 2016 were retrospectively analyzed. Clinical evaluation investigated the presence of genital prolapse, stress urinary incontinence (SUI), overactive bladder (OAB), urge urinary incontinence (UUI), voiding symptoms (VS), and bulging symptoms. The degree of concorda

Excretory urographic, ultrasonographic, and cystoscopic characteristics of urinary bladder abscesses in a dog.

A 7-year-old male neutered, 6.5 kg, Maltese breed dog was referred with a history of dysuria after undergoing two cystotomies to remove calcium oxalate uroliths. Survey radiographs were inconclusive. Excretory urography allowed visualization of two filling defects in the cranioventral urinary bladder region. Ultrasonography showed urinary bladder sediments, a diffusely thickened wall, and two circumscribed intramural/intraluminal structures with an anechoic interior and a smooth and regular surface. The cystoscopic diagnosis was urinary bladder abscesses and urine cultures were positive for Es…

Primary squamous cell carcinoma of the urinary bladder presenting as an inguinal mass.

This report involves a rare case of a 74-year-old man who presented with a progressively increasing swelling in the right groin, which represented a squamous cell bladder carcinoma herniating into the right inguinal canal. The manuscript discusses the role of multimodality imaging in bladder carcinoma presenting as an inguinoscrotal hernia. The patient subsequently underwent treatment with a chemotherapy regimen consisting of 5-fluorouracil and mitomycin, which was extrapolated from squamous cell carcinoma of the anal canal, and responded well.

Angiosarcoma of the Urinary Bladder Following Radiotherapy: Report of a Case and Review of the Literature.

Background and objectives: Angiosarcomas are uncommon and extremely aggressive malignancies derived from vascular endothelial cells. Although they can occur anywhere in the body and at any age, they are more frequently found in the skin of the head and neck regions and in the elderly. Few cases have been recorded in deep soft tissues and in parenchymal organs. Angiosarcomas of the urinary bladder are exceedingly rare. They usually arise in adult patients with a history of radiation therapy, cigarette smoking, or exposure to chemical agents (e.g., vinyl chloride). Despite multidisciplinary trea…

Relationship of Pain Catastrophizing With Urinary Biomarkers in Women With Bladder Pain Syndrome.

OBJECTIVES: Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) has been implicated in central neurological processes. We hypothesize that greater pain catastrophizing is associated with higher urinary BDNF levels in women with bladder pain syndrome. METHODS: A secondary analysis of a database of women with urinary urgency was conducted. We identified women who met AUA criteria of bladder pain syndrome. Urinary symptoms, pain catastrophizing, and neuropathic pain were measured using the Female Genitourinary Pain Index, Pain Catastrophizing Scale and painDETECT questionnaires respectively.
