The proteus effect on human pain perception through avatar muscularity and gender factors.

The Proteus effect, which occurs when using an avatar in virtual reality, influences user behavior, changes attitudes, and improves physical performance. Here, we show that human pain perception can be alleviated by the Proteus effect. To investigate the pain alleviation effect of using an avatar in a virtual environment, we conducted two experiments using a head-mounted display and a thermal pain stimulator to induce acute pain. The first experiment involved 20 adult participants, while the second experiment involved 44 adult participants. Experimental results show that participants reported

The effect of different interfaces during virtual game practice on motor performance of individuals with genetic ataxia: A cross-sectional study.

PURPOSE: Reaching and coordination tasks are widely used in traditional physical rehabilitation programs for individuals with Ataxia. Virtual reality interventions could optimize the motor performance of these individuals; however, the type of virtual interface may influence performance during virtual practice. We aimed to estimate the extent of the effect of different interfaces (webcam and touchscreen) on the motor performance of individuals with various types of genetic ataxia, compared to a control group, during virtual computer game tasks. METHODS: Repeated exposure quasi-experimental de

Effects of icon size and location on speed and accuracy of SGD access.

Increasing speed and accuracy of communication via a speech-generating device (SGD) is an important clinical goal in augmentative and alternative communication (AAC). The current study, conducted with adults without disabilities using a within-subject experimental design, compared the effects of two different SGD trainings on speed and accuracy of locating words via an SGD interface. During size-centered training, participants were introduced to six large icons that completely filled an SGD screen. During location-centered training, participants were introduced to six small icons on a 40-locat

First-trimester crown-rump length and embryonic volume of aneuploid fetuses measured in virtual reality.

OBJECTIVES: To examine whether embryonic volume (EV), as measured using three-dimensional (3D) ultrasound and a virtual reality approach, is a better measure of growth restriction than is crown-rump length (CRL) in aneuploid fetuses. METHODS: We retrospectively measured CRL and EV in prospectively collected 3D ultrasound volumes of 55 aneuploid fetuses using the Barco I-Space VR system. The gestational age ranged from 11 + 2 to 14 + 4 weeks. We compared our measured data with previously published reference curves for euploid fetuses. Delta-values were calculated by subtracting the expected me

Perceptual learning of orientation judgments in oblique meridians.

Fourteen daily training sessions in orientation discrimination of foveal lines in the 45-deg meridian improved thresholds in the trained meridian by an average of 25 % in five observers. A substantial amount of training transferred to the other obliques, but none to the cardinal meridians, with a consequent reduction in the oblique effect. The data were interpreted as showing perceptual learning at two levels: performance facilitation specific to the trained orientation and improved proficiency globally. The failure of the cardinal orientations to share in the benefit is likely to have its ori

Human-robot-interaction control for orthoses with pneumatic soft-actuators--concept and initial trails.

The purpose of this paper is to present a concept of human-robot-interaction control for robots with compliant pneumatic soft-actuators which are directly attached to the human body. Backdrivability of this type of actuators is beneficial for comfort and safety and they are well suitable to design rehabilitation robots for training of activities of daily living (ADL). The concept is verified with an application example of sit-to-stand tasks taking conventional treatment in neurology as reference. The focus is on stroke patients with a target group suffering from hemiplegia and paralysis in one

Efficacy of virtual reality in triggering the craving to smoke: its relation to level of presence and nicotine dependence.

Virtual Reality environments that reproduce typical contexts associated with tobacco use may be useful for aiding smoking cessation. The main objective of this study was to assess the capacity of eight environments to produce the craving to smoke and determine the relation of craving to nicotine dependence and level of presence. The results show that all the environments were able to generate the desire to smoke; a direct relation was found between sense of presence and craving.

A demonstration project for using the electronic health record to identify and treat tobacco users.

BACKGROUND: While the majority of smokers visit a primary care physician each year, only a small proportion of them receive evidence-based tobacco dependence treatment. The electronic health record (EHR) provides an opportunity to prompt clinicians to deliver tobacco dependence treatment in primary care. METHODS: Over 1 year, Dean Health Systems worked with the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health to modify the existing Dean EHR system (Epic Systems Corp, Verona, Wisconsin) to improve identification and treatment of adult smokers visiting primary care clinics. Modifica

Sleep to find your way: the role of sleep in the consolidation of memory for navigation in humans.

Although a large body of evidence indicates that sleep plays an important role in learning and memory processes, the actual existence of a sleep-dependent spatial memory consolidation has been not firmly established. Here, by using a computerized 3D virtual navigation tool, we were able to show that topographical orientation in humans largely benefits from sleep after learning, while 10 h of wakefulness during the daytime do not exert similar beneficial effects. In particular, navigation performance enhancement needs sleep in the first post-training night, and no further improvements were seen

Supporting medical planning by mitigating cognitive load.

OBJECTIVES: Developing a care plan for a patient is a complex task, requiring an understanding of interactions and dependencies between procedures and of their possible outcomes for an individual patient. Decision support for planning has broader requirements than are typically considered in medical informatics applications. We consider the appropriate design of software to assist medical planning. METHODS: The likely cognitive loads imposed by planning tasks were assessed with a view to directly supporting these via software. RESULTS: Five types of cognitive load are likely to be important.

Spike-timing codes enhance the representation of multiple simultaneous sound-localization cues in the inferior colliculus.

To preserve multiple streams of independent information that converge onto a neuron, the information must be re-represented more efficiently in the neural response. Here we analyze the increase in the representational capacity of spike timing over rate codes using sound localization cues as an example. The inferior colliculus receives convergent input from multiple auditory brainstem nuclei, including sound localization information such as interaural level differences (ILDs), interaural timing differences (ITDs), and spectral cues. Virtual space techniques were used to create stimulus sets var

Performance on a dual driving simulation and subtraction task following sleep restriction.

A novel task, combining simulated driving with subtraction, was compared in 26 participants ages 18 to 26 years (M=20.6, SD=2.3; 13 men). After two nights of 8.5 hr. in bed, participants performed a 30-min. driving and subtraction task followed by a 10-min. Psychomotor Vigilance Task. These tasks were repeated after two more nights of 8.5 hr. time in bed for the control group and 5 hours and 3 hours time in bed for the restricted group. The sensitivity of the task to moderate sleep loss was supported because impairment was seen on several dual-task variables whereas impairment was not observed

A controlled study of virtual reality exposure therapy for the fear of flying.

Fear of flying (FOF) affects an estimated 10-25% of the population. Patients with FOF (N = 49) were randomly assigned to virtual reality exposure (VRE) therapy, standard exposure (SE) therapy, or a wait-list (WL) control. Treatment consisted of 8 sessions over 6 weeks, with 4 sessions of anxiety management training followed by either exposure to a virtual airplane (VRE) or exposure to an actual airplane at the airport (SE). A posttreatment flight on a commercial airline measured participants' willingness to fly and anxiety during flight immediately after treatment. The results indicated that V
