Predictions of recall and study strategy decisions after diffuse brain injury.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate relationships between self-monitoring operationalized by predicting recall and study strategy decisions made by adults with diffuse, acquired brain injury (ABI) and adults without ABI. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Eighteen adults with ABI and 16 without ABI studied two lists of unrelated noun-pairs, made item-by-item immediate and delayed recall predictions and selected items (after predictions) to restudy again. The computer selected items for restudy based on the lowest prediction rating (i.e. unlikely to recall). A mixed list design was used to balance item select

Issues contrasting adult acquired versus developmental apraxia of speech.

Acquired and developmental apraxia of speech (AOS and DAS) are defined as disorders of the transition from an abstract phonological code into motor commands. However, the natural course of these disorders differs substantially because of the fundamental difference in the developmental stage at which the apraxia expresses itself. In normal and pathological development alike, development of language and speech is an interactive process, involving speech motor control, perception, and psycholinguistic processes. Infant speech develops from random babbling and sensomotoric learning, followed by mo

Two cases of functional focal retrograde amnesia with impairment of object use.

We report on two patients, TH and KN, with focal retrograde amnesia (FRA). Their memory loss regarding life events extended to their whole lives, whereas they could acquire and retain new information. They also showed prominent deficits in production and comprehension of common words. In addition, at least in the testing situation, they were impaired in their recognition and use of familiar objects. Although both cases of FRA followed an episode that can cause brain pathology, MRI revealed no structural abnormality in either patient. Stressful situations preceding the onset were evident in KN,

Gilles de la Tourette syndrome in a child with congenital deafness.

We present the case of a 10-year-old boy, Sam, with congenital deafness and Gilles de la Tourette Syndrome (GTS). GTS is characterised by multiple motor tics and one or more vocal tics that wax and wane. Due to his deafness Sam never developed vocal language but instead used sign language from the age of four. His tic disorder rapidly accelerated from the age of seven over a six-month period and soon sign language was incorporated into tics as complex "vocal" tics. Bursting out "words" in sign language would also occur in front of people unfamiliar with sign language and often with an obscene

When does a deep dyslexic make a semantic error? The roles of age-of-acquisition, concreteness, and frequency.

Semantic reading errors are the central and defining feature of deep dyslexia. This study compared the words the deep dyslexic patient LW read correctly with those she omitted and those to which she produced semantic errors in terms of their concreteness, age-of-acquisition, frequency, and length. Semantic errors were made to less concrete, later-acquired, and shorter words than were read correctly; there was no reliable effect of word frequency. More importantly, the actual semantic errors produced were later-acquired than the stimulus words, but they were not more concrete or reliably more f

Memory bias for panic-related material in patients with panic disorder.

Two experiments investigated memory bias for panic-related material in 40 patients with panic disorder and 40 healthy control subjects. No memory bias was found on a memory task that tested intentional encoding and explicit recall of panic-related versus non-panic-related sentences. In contrast, a significant memory bias was apparent on a memory task requiring classification of panic-related and non-panic-related words to test conceptual information processing in implicit memory. Panic patients learned panic-related material better than controls.

The influence of different diagnostic approaches on familial aggregation of spelling disability.

The influence of different diagnostic approaches on familial aggregation of spelling disability was investigated in three studies. In the first study, in a sample of 32 dyslexic children and their families, we found significantly increased rates of spelling-disabled sibs and parents by applying the IQ-discrepancy criterion. There was no evidence for the assumption that IQ-discrepancy and low achievement criteria define different subgroups of spelling disorder regarding familial aggregation. In the second study, in a sample of 79 adults, it could be demonstrated that questionnaire data can be u

The role of phonological awareness, speech perception, and auditory temporal processing for dyslexia.

There is strong evidence that auditory processing plays a major role in the etiology of dyslexia. Auditory temporal processing of non-speech stimuli, speech perception, and phonological awareness have been shown to be influential in reading and spelling development. However, the relationship between these variables remains unclear. In order to analyze the influence of these three auditory processing levels on spelling, 19 dyslexic and 15 control children were examined. Significant group differences were found for all speech variables, but not for any non-speech variable. Structural equation mo

Patterns of phonological and memory processing in beginning readers and spellers of Greek.

This study examined the patterns of reading and spelling performance of first-grade Greek children who either were facing difficulties in literacy acquisition or were normal achievers. In addition, we studied the relationship between obtained literacy development levels and the children's phonological awareness and ability to retain phonological information in short-term memory. The participants were tested in the reading of single letters, letter clusters, words, and nonwords, as well as in word and nonword spelling. Furthermore, their phonological processing knowledge was assessed via a batt

Increasing the naming speed of poor readers: representations formed across repetitions.

In three experiments we examined the effect of repetition practice on the acquisition, retention, and generalization of children's skill in rapidly naming visually presented words. Experiment 1 showed that naming times decrease rapidly with practice. Retention of this newly acquired skill in rapid naming was a function of the degree of learning during training. "Overlearning" was necessary to prevent forgetting of the skill. Experiment 2 indicated that the rate at which the naming gains were acquired, and the amount of forgetting, was unrelated to the specific orthographic to phonological corr

"Spontaneous" transfer of stimulus control from tact to mand contingencies.

An important issue in teaching verbal behavior to persons with severe handicaps is the transfer of stimulus control from tact (e.g., naming) to mand (e.g., requesting) relationships. Previous research has shown that topographies taught as tacts frequently fail to appear as mands unless transfer between these two response classes is explicitly programmed. Procedures promoting this transfer would provide a necessary instructional tool. Transfer from tact to mand contingencies was investigated in two adults with severe mental retardation. Correct pointing responses to line drawing symbols depicti

Familial resemblance for cognitive abilities in families with P-type dyslexic, L-type dyslexic, or normal reading boys.

P-type dyslexic, L-type dyslexic, and normal reading boys, and their parents were administered a number of cognitive tasks. The P- and L-type dyslexic boys showed impaired performances on tasks representing a verbal/memory dimension. In addition, L-type dyslexics performed worse on a figure-rotation task, a result that supported the notion of a visuospatial deficit in this type of reading disturbance. The parents of P- and L-type dyslexics exhibited lowered performances on verbal/memory tasks, but they showed no evidence of impaired visuospatial functioning. Indices of familial resemblance rev

Creating an anti-ableist learning environment: Development of a novel disability-related microaggressions session for medical and dental students and mixed methods analysis of impact on learning and empowerment.

BACKGROUND: Disability-related microaggressions are unique among microaggressions in the assumptions they reflect and the verbal and non-verbal forms they take. They impact patients and providers alike. Yet, medical and dental students are not routinely educated about disability-related microaggressions. A medical school student-faculty team harnessed Kern's six-step curriculum design process to co-produce a novel 90-min educational intervention centered on recognizing and responding to disability-related microaggressions. The session was piloted in February 2022 as a required element of the s

Journey mapping as an inclusive research tool: Capturing the learning journeys of health professions educators with dyslexia.

INTRODUCTION: The field of health professions education has seen growing emphasis on inclusive pedagogies and learner diversity. Universal Design for Learning (UDL) offers a framework for designing educational experiences that accommodate diverse learning needs. Applying this principle to research, we must consider not only what we research but also how we research. Dyslexia is one example where traditional research practices may unintentionally marginalise participant voices. Conventional research interviews-especially those relying heavily on verbal recall and heavy question-answer formats-m

Internal and external focus of attention during gait re-education: an observational study of physical therapist practice in stroke rehabilitation.

BACKGROUND: Focus of attention is known to play an important role in motor skill learning, yet little is known about how attention is directed within the context of stroke rehabilitation. OBJECTIVE: The aims of this study were: (1) to identify physical therapists' use of internal and external focus of attention during gait rehabilitation for individuals with hemiplegia following stroke and (2) to use the findings to design an experimental study examining the impact of focus of attention on learning poststroke. DESIGN: The study design involved direct nonparticipation observation of physical

Characterizing rule-based category learning deficits in patients with Parkinson's disease.

Parkinson's disease (PD) patients and normal controls were tested in three category learning experiments to determine if previously observed rule-based category learning impairments in PD patients were due to deficits in selective attention or working memory. In Experiment 1, optimal categorization required participants to base their decision on a single stimulus dimension and ignore irrelevant variation on another dimension, thus emphasizing selective attention processes. In Experiment 2, optimal categorization required participants to base their decision on both stimulus dimensions using a c

Neuropsychological correlations with fornix and hippocampus in temporal lobe epilepsy demonstrated with diffusion tensor imaging.

OBJECTIVE: Memory dysfunction is a common disabling comorbidity in temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) and hippocampal sclerosis (HS). While bilateral fornix diffusion abnormalities have been reported in TLE using diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), the impact of fornix pathology on cognitive outcomes remains unclear. This study investigated the relationships between fornix DTI, hippocampal volume, and cognitive outcomes in TLE. METHODS: Thirty-five TLE patients (21 unilateral HS, 11 non-HS, 3 bilateral HS) and 22 controls underwent fornix FLAIR-DTI (1.2 × 1.2 × 2 mm3 resolution) and hippocampal DTI (1
