We have previously shown that sinusoidal galvanic vestibular stimulation (sGVS), delivered at 0.2-2.0 Hz, evokes a partial entrainment of muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA). Moreover, at lower frequencies of stimulation (0.08-0.18 Hz) sGVS produces two peaks of modulation: one (primary) peak associated with the positive peak of the sinusoidal stimulus and a smaller (secondary) peak associated with the trough. Here we assessed whether sGVS delivered at 0.05 Hz causes a more marked modulation of MSNA than at higher frequencies and tested the hypothesis that the primary and secondary peaks

The vestibular organ senses linear and rotational acceleration of the head during active and passive motion. These signals are necessary for bipedal locomotion, navigation, the coordination of eye and head movements in 3D space. The temporal dynamics of vestibular processing in cortical structures have hardly been studied in humans, let alone with natural stimulation. The aim was to investigate the cortical vestibular network related to natural otolith stimulation using a hexapod motion platform. We conducted two experiments, 1. to estimate the sources of the vestibular evoked potentials (Vest

The leading symptoms of bilateral vestibulopathy (BVP) are postural imbalance and unsteadiness of gait, deficits of spatial memory and navigation. The etiology of BVP remains unclear in more than 50% of patients: in these cases neurodegeneration is assumed. Frequent known causes are ototoxicity mainly due to gentamicin, bilateral Menière's disease, autoimmune diseases, meningitis and bilateral vestibular schwannoma, as well as an association with cerebellar degeneration. The diagnosis of BVP is based on a bilaterally reduced or absent function of the vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR). Head impulse

Current experimental research on the therapeutic effects of galvanic vestibular stimulation (GVS) has mainly focused on neurodegenerative disorders. However, it primarily stimulates the vestibular nuclei and could be potentially effective in modulating imbalance between them in the case of unilateral labyrinthectomy (UL). Fifty male Wistar rats (180-220g) were used in 5 groups of 10: intact, sham, right-UL (RUL; without intervention), and two other right-UL groups with GVS intervention [one group treated with low rate GVS (GVS.LF; 6-7Hz), and the other treated with high rate GVS (GVS.HF; 17-18

In experiments with rats, a new 3-hydroxypyridine (3-HP) derivative--2-ethyl-6-methyl-3-hydroxypyridine L-asparaginate (30 mg/kg)--exhibited a strong vestibuloprotective effect which was better than of promethazine (50 mg/kg), a well-known vestibuloprotector Besides the new actoprotector was competitive with another 3-HP derivative, namely, mexidol (ethyl-methyl-hydroxypyridine succinate) (100 mg/kg). Moreover, a distinct thermoprotective effect of 2-ethyl-6-methyl-3-hydroxypyridine L-asparaginate (30 mg/kg) in mice was not worse than that of mexidol or metaprot (ethylthiobenzimidasol, former

Recurrent bacterial meningitis is an uncommon disease of childhood. It occurs most often in children who have an underlying predisposing disorder that can result from anatomic fistula or immunodeficiency. Cochleovestibular dysplasia is a rare malformation of the inner ear that is often associated with translabyrinthine cerebrospinal fistula and then can cause recurrent bacterial meningitis. We report an unusual case of recurrent meningitis revealing cochleovestibular dysplasia in a 9-year-old child. The malformation was confirmed by imaging and the child had surgery. The outcome was favourable

Balance function is dramatically deteriorated after exposure to microgravity. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the role and the contribution of different gravity sensory systems to the development of balance impairment after long-term spaceflights. Postural perturbations (pushes to the chest) of the threshold, medium, and sub-maximal intensities were produced in eight cosmonauts before, and on the day 3, 7, and 11 following spaceflight. Postural corrective responses were analyzed by anterior-posterior body sway fluctuation and electromyographic activity of leg muscles. The c

Bilateral loss of vestibular sensation can disable individuals whose vestibular hair cells are injured by ototoxic medications, infection, Ménière's disease or other insults to the labyrinth including surgical trauma during cochlear implantation. Without input to vestibulo-ocular and vestibulo-spinal reflexes that normally stabilize the eyes and body, affected patients suffer blurred vision during head movement, postural instability, and chronic disequilibrium. While individuals with some residual sensation often compensate for their loss through rehabilitation exercises, those who fail to do

The behavioral effects of 3,4-dihydro-2(1H)-pyrimidinethione (DPT, a pyrimidine derivative), which is used as a test system for detecting tumor growth, on the ultrastructure and function of Mauthner neurons (MN), were studied in goldfish. Application of DPT to MN was found to lead to increased resistance of neurons to exhaustive stimulation, which was accompanied by increases in the sizes of actin-containing membrane desmosome-like contacts, along with the formation of bundles of actin stress fibers; these effects are similar to those previously reported with dopamine. The similarity of the mo

OBJECTIVES: To study whether rotational stimulus induced pica and whether the vestibular apparatus was necessary for obtaining rotation-induced pica in mice.
METHODS: Pica behavior in mice was investigated following 60 min of rotation once daily at 70 rpm (15 s on with 5 s off) for 3 consecutive days. After evaluating vestibular function and histology of vestibular epithelia, we examined rotation-induced kaolin intake, so-called pica, in sham-lesioned and chemically labyrinthectomized mice.
RESULTS: The labyrinthectomized mice exhibited loss of the contact righting and swimming capability wh

Many elderly people complain dizziness which may continue occasionally for months or years. According to epidemiological studies, 25-29% of subjects with more than 60 years of age have the experience of dizziness. Dizziness occurs most commonly during head positional changes or walking. Clinical studies have indicated that causes of dizziness are nonspecific and multi-factorial; cerebrovascular diseases, cervical spondylosis, depressive state, poor vision, orthostatic hypotension, whiplash injury, or low cerebrospinal fluid syndrome may play a role in the development of dizziness. Patients wit

We investigated the orientation of quick phases (QPs) of vestibularly-induced eye movements in rabbits in response to "off-vertical" sinusoidal vestibular stimulation. We also examined the possible role of the cerebellar nodulus and ventral uvula in controlling QP spatial orientation and modification. During "off-vertical" vestibular stimulation QPs remained aligned with the earth's horizontal plane, while the slow phases (SPs) were aligned with the plane of vestibular stimulation. This suggests that QPs are coded in gravito-inertial coordinates and SPs in head coordinates. When rabbits were o

The present work compares passive and active rotations in darkness with the aim of characterizing the contribution of efferent and proprioceptive information to the perception of angular displacement. The perception of angular displacements was measured in 12 naive subjects (Ss), who either stood on a rotating platform (passive mode, P) or actively turned about their vertical axis by stepping around "on the spot" on a stationary platform (active mode, A). Rotations consisted of short acceleration epochs followed by constant velocity periods of 18.5, 37, and 55 degrees /s, with angular displace

The vestibulospinal aspects of vestibular function are commonly neglected in the evaluation of alcohol-induced intoxication. Thus, in the present study the effect of an acute intoxication with a low or moderate quantity of alcohol was examined with respect to the equilibrium in 30 healthy subjects. The blood alcohol concentration (BAC) was measured 30 min after the ingestion of the last alcohol, ranging between 0.22 and 1.59 per thousand. Stability of stance was quantified by static platform posturography in Romberg-test conditions with eyes open and eyes closed. Among other parameters, the av
