Adverse health manifestations in the hands of vibration exposed carpenters - a cross sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Despite EU regulatory standards, many workers suffer injury as a result of working with hand-held vibrating tools. Our aim of this study was to confirm whether carpenters, a highly exposed group, suffer more injuries to their hands than painters, a group assumed to be less exposed to vibration. METHODS: 193 carpenters (participation rate 100%) and 72 painters (participation rate 67%), all men, answered a questionnaire and underwent a clinical examination to identify manifestations of neural and vascular origin in the hands. Neurosensory affection was defined as having at least one…

Vibration Control of Diamond Nanothreads by Lattice Defect Introduction for Application in Nanomechanical Sensors.

Carbon nanomaterials, such as carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and graphene sheets (GSs), have been adopted as resonators in vibration-based nanomechanical sensors because of their extremely high stiffness and small size. Diamond nanothreads (DNTs) are a new class of one-dimensional carbon nanomaterials with extraordinary physical and chemical properties. Their structures are similar to that of diamond in that they possess sp3-bonds formed by a covalent interaction between multiple benzene molecules. In this study, we focus on investigating the mechanical properties and vibration behaviors of DNTs with…

Postural performance and plantar cutaneous vibration perception in patients with idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether impaired plantar cutaneous vibration perception contributes to postural disturbance in idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH). METHODS: Three different groups were tested: iNPH-patients (iNPH), iNPH-patients after surgical shunt therapy (iNPH shunt), and healthy subjects (HS). Postural performance was quantified during quiescent stance on a pressure distribution platform. Vibration perception threshold (VPT) was measured using a modified vibration exciter to apply stimuli to the plantar foot. RESULTS: Regarding postural performance, iNPH showed sign…

Vibration improves gait biomechanics linked to posttraumatic knee osteoarthritis following anterior cruciate ligament injury.

Anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) incurs a high risk of posttraumatic knee osteoarthritis (PTOA). Aberrant gait biomechanics contribute to PTOA and are attributable in part to quadriceps dysfunction. Vibration improves quadriceps function following ACLR, but its effects on gait biomechanics are unknown. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of whole-body vibration (WBV) and local muscle vibration (LMV) on gait biomechanics in individuals with ACLR. Seventy-five volunteers (time since ACLR 27 ± 16 months) were randomized to WBV, LMV, or Control interventions. Walk…

Improving vibration perception in a patient with type 2 diabetes and sensory peripheral neuropathy.

INTRODUCTION: Diabetes mellitus (DM) and its related sensory peripheral neuropathy (SPN) are the biggest risk factors for foot ulcer formation and lower limb amputation. Reduced vibration perception results in less sensitivity to pressure and is a known risk factor for diabetic foot ulcers. Improving vibration perception in the feet of people with SPN could be protective against foot ulcers. The aim of this study was to determine if a therapeutic vibrating insole, used for 35 consecutive days, could improve vibration perception in a patient with type 2 DM. PATIENT PRESENTATION: The patient wa…

Effect of vibration emissions during shipping of artificial insemination doses on boar semen quality.

The shipping of semen doses to sow farms can impair boar semen quality. Unfortunately, there is currently no practice-oriented information available regarding general shipping conditions of boar semen. For this reason, a special mobile sensing app (TransportLog 1.0), utilizing the built-in sensors of smartphones, has been programmed to capture vibration emissions during shipping of semen doses (QuickTip Flexitubes®, Minitüb). Data were analyzed, transformed and used as standards for simulating vibration emissions from an orbital shaker IKA MTS 4 (Laborgeräte München) in a spermatological refer…

Stochastic response analysis for nonlinear vibration systems with adjustable stiffness property under random excitation.

Nonlinear vibration systems with adjustable stiffness property have attracted considerable attentions for their prominent broadband performances. In the present manuscript, we consider the stochastic dynamical systems with adjustable stiffness and proposed a numerical method for the random responses analysis of the Gaussian white noise excited systems. A multi-dimensional Fokker-Plank-Kolmogorov equation governing the joint probability density of the mechanical states is derived according to the theory of diffusion processes. We solve the multi-dimensional equation using a splitting method and…

Association Between Whole-Body Vibration and Low-Back Disorders in Farmers: A Scoping Review.

INTRODUCTION: Low-back disorders (LBDs) are the most common musculoskeletal problem among farmers, with higher prevalence rates than in other occupations. Farmers who operate tractors and other types of machinery can have substantial exposure to whole-body vibration (WBV). Although there appears to be an association between LBDs and WBV, the causal relationship is not clear. OBJECTIVE: This scoping review investigates the association between WBV and LBDs specifically among farmers. METHODS: Nine databases were searched using groups of terms for two concepts: 'farming' and 'low back disorder'…

Performance characteristics of vibration-controlled transient elastography for evaluation of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease.

UNLABELLED: Vibration-controlled transient elastography estimates liver stiffness measurement (LSM) and controlled attenuation parameter (CAP), which are noninvasive assessments of hepatic fibrosis and steatosis, respectively. However, prior vibration-controlled transient elastography studies reported high failure rates in patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. We examined the performance characteristics of the FibroScan 502 Touch with two probes, medium (M+) and extra large (XL+), in patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease in a multicenter setting. A total of 1,696 exams were …

Intracranial Pressure and Promontory Vibration With Soft Tissue Stimulation in Cadaveric Human Whole Heads.

HYPOTHESIS: Intracranial pressure and skull vibrations are correlated and depend on the stimulation position and frequency. BACKGROUND: A hearing sensation can be elicited by vibratory stimulation on the skin covered skull, or by stimulation on soft tissue such as the neck. It is not fully understood whether different stimulation sites induce the skull vibrations responsible for the perception or whether other transmission pathways are dominant. The aim of this study was to assess the correlation between intracranial pressure and skull vibration measured on the promontory for stimulation to d…

Stapes Vibration in the Chinchilla Middle Ear: Relation to Behavioral and Auditory-Nerve Thresholds.

The vibratory responses to tones of the stapes and incus were measured in the middle ears of deeply anesthetized chinchillas using a wide-band acoustic-stimulus system and a laser velocimeter coupled to a microscope. With the laser beam at an angle of about 40 ° relative to the axis of stapes piston-like motion, the sensitivity-vs.-frequency curves of vibrations at the head of the stapes and the incus lenticular process were very similar to each other but larger, in the range 15-30 kHz, than the vibrations of the incus just peripheral to the pedicle. With the laser beam aligned with the axis o…

Benefits of whole-body vibration to people with COPD: a community-based efficacy trial.

BACKGROUND: Benefits of community-based whole-body vibration (WBV) as a mode of exercise training for people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) have not been investigated. The low skill demand of WBV may enhance habitual sustainability to physical activity by people with COPD, provided efficacy of WBV can be established. The purpose of this trial was to compare a community-based WBV intervention with a sham WBV (SWBV) intervention and monitor exacerbations, exercise tolerance, and functional performance of the lower limbs of people with COPD. METHODS: Community-dwelling adults …

Interaction of support surface stability and Achilles tendon vibration during a postural adaptation task.

Orchestration of sensory-motor information and adaptation to internal or external, acute or chronic changes is one of the fundamental features of human postural control. The postural control system is challenged on a daily basis, and displays a remarkable ability to adapt to both long and short term challenges. To explore the interaction between support surface stability and Achilles tendon vibration during a period of adaptation we used both a linear measure and a non-linear measure derived from center-of-pressure (COP) data. An equilibrium score (ES), based upon peak amplitude of anterior-po…

Acute bone marker responses to whole-body vibration and resistance exercise in young women.

Whole-body vibration (WBV) augments the musculoskeletal effects of resistance exercise (RE). However, its acute effects on bone turnover markers (BTM) have not been determined. This study examined BTM responses to acute high-intensity RE and high-intensity RE with WBV (WBV+RE) in young women (n=10) taking oral contraceptives in a randomized, crossover repeated measures design. WBV+RE exposed subjects to 5 one-minute bouts of vibration (20 Hz, 3.38 peak-peak displacement, separated by 1 min of rest) before RE. Fasting blood samples were obtained before (Pre), immediately after WBV (PostVib), im…
