Correcting high astigmatism with piggyback toric intraocular lens implantation.

An 86-year-old man presented for cataract surgery with corneal astigmatism of 5.12 diopters (D). After cataract extraction with small-incision techniques, 2 toric plate-haptic silicone intraocular lenses (IOLs) were implanted in the capsular bag, each with a 3.50 D cylinder add (2.30 D at the spectacle plane). Six weeks postoperatively, corneal astigmatism was 3.38 D at 70 degrees and refractive astigmatism was 1.00 D at 20 degrees. Uncorrected visual acuity was 20/40. No IOL rotation was observed. Implantation of piggybacked toric lenses may be a viable option for correcting moderate to high

Black diaphragm intraocular lens in congenital aniridia.

Beginning in June 1991, we implanted a newly designed, black diaphragm intraocular lens (IOL) into 13 eyes with congenital aniridia after cataract surgery. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first group of patients to receive a black diaphragm IOL. With the first prototype we experienced various difficulties, which prompted four design modifications. The latest IOL with a diaphragm diameter of 10 mm can be guided safely into the ciliary sulcus. IOL implantation improved visual acuity in 9 of 13 eyes; 4 of these exhibited considerably less nystagmus than was observed preoperatively. Duri

Radiographic results of augmented all-polyethylene glenoids in the presence of posterior glenoid bone loss during total shoulder arthroplasty.

BACKGROUND: Chronic osteoarthritis can result in glenohumeral subluxation and loss of posterior glenoid bone. This can alter normal glenohumeral biomechanics and affect the stress placed on the glenoid implant after total shoulder arthroplasty. This study evaluated the clinical and radiographic results of an augmented all-polyethylene glenoid for the treatment of glenoid osteoarthritis in the presence of posterior glenoid bone loss and determined whether any failures or complications occurred with short-term follow-up. METHODS: During a 2-year period, 21 patients were treated with an augmente

Surgical technique of robotic arm-assisted total knee arthroplasty via the lateral parapatellar approach for valgus knee deformity.

BACKGROUND: Valgus knee deformity, which is less common, is not a mirror image of varus knee deformity and poses unique technical challenges in total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Although the lateral parapatellar approach may be advantageous for severe valgus knee, the medial approach is often preferred due to surgeons' limited familiarity with valgus TKA and the lateral approach. Recently, robotic technology has demonstrated superior accuracy in bone resection and soft-tissue balancing during TKA. Hence, we introduce the application of robotic technology for valgus knees via the lateral approach

A Multimodal Stimulation System for Conveying Diverse Feedback in Hand Prosthetics: Preliminary Assessment.

Artificial somatosensory feedback plays a crucial role in compensating for tactile and proprioceptive loss in prosthesis users. Although modern prosthetic systems can acquire rich sensory data, effectively conveying this multimodal information to the user remains a significant challenge. This study presents a wearable somatosensory feedback armband with two configurations: a multimodal version using combined vibrotactile-electrotactile (VEC) stimulation, and a unimodal version based on vibrotactile-only (VO) stimulation. In both configurations, proprioceptive feedback is conveyed via spatiotem
