Acquired bilateral laryngeal paralysis associated with systemic lupus erythematosus in a dog.

A 4 yr old spayed female Labrador retriever was referred for acute respiratory distress and was found to have bilateral laryngeal paralysis. Physical examination and biochemical testing were consistent with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and did not reveal a likely alternative cause for the laryngeal paralysis. Following immunosuppressive and supportive treatment, the dog regained normal laryngeal function. At a scheduled follow-up examination 6 wk later, normal laryngeal function was confirmed via sedated laryngeal examination. Laryngeal paralysis associated with SLE has been reported in

Laryngeal paralysis in dogs.

Laryngeal paralysis is a common cause of upper airway obstruction in older, large-breed dogs and is likely associated with a generalized polyneuropathy in most animals. Surgical therapy is frequently indicated, and UAL is currently the recommended treatment. Respiratory signs significantly improve in most patients after surgery; however, postoperative complication rates can be high, and patients have a lifelong risk of developing respiratory tract disease.

Effect of magnitude and direction of force on laryngeal abduction: implications for the nerve-muscle pedicle graft technique.

REASONS FOR PERFORMING STUDY: The nerve-muscle pedicle graft technique is a treatment for recurrent laryngeal neuropathy (RLN), but the optimal placement of the pedicles within the cricoarytenoideus dorsalis (CAD) muscle is unknown. HYPOTHESIS: The magnitude and direction of force placed on the muscular process of the left arytenoid cartilage affects the magnitude of laryngeal abduction. METHODS: Five larynges were harvested from cadavers. Using increments of 0.98 N, a dead-weight force generator applied a force of 0-14.7 N for 1 min each to the left muscular process at 0, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50

Intracordal injection technique: materials and injection site.

OBJECTIVE: Various materials have been used for intracordal injection to treat deficiencies in glottal closure. However, specific injection sites and materials are desirable for various conditions. Here, we reviewed injection sites and materials. METHODS: By considering the characteristics of injection materials used in Japan to date as well as the normal structure of the vocal cord, we have determined injection materials and sites suitable for different type of disease. RESULTS: Collagen obtained commercially for injection consists mainly of type I collagen, as does autologous fascia. When

[The neuroattract growth effect of ciliary neurotrophic factor on recurrent laryngeal nerve regeneration].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the neuroattract growth effect of Ciliary neurotrophic factor (CNTF) on recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) regeneration. METHODS: 28 canines were divided into 4 groups (n = 7). RLN was severed and sutured in silicone chamber. CNTF or saline were injected into silicone chambers during nerve repair and injected subcutaneously every day after surgery in group A and B respectively. In group C and D, end to end anastomosis of RLN was performed, and CNTF or saline was used respectively for one month. The nerve regeneration and neuroattract growth effect were evaluated with el

The biomechanics of the medialization laryngoplasty (thyroplasty type 1) in an ex vivo canine model.

The biomechanics of medialization laryngoplasty are not well understood. An excised canine larynx model was used to test the effects of various sized silicon implants. The vocal fold length, position, and tension were measured. Medialization laryngoplasty did not affect vocal fold length. At the mid-membranous vocal fold, larger shims resulted in greater medialization and tension. Medialization laryngoplasty neither medialized nor stiffened the vocal process to resist lateralizing forces. We conclude that medialization laryngoplasty provides bulk and support for defects of the membranous regio

Endoscopic laser medial arytenoidectomy versus total arytenoidectomy in the management of bilateral vocal fold paralysis.

Bilateral laryngeal paralysis can result in severe airway compromise. A widely accepted treatment is endoscopic laser total arytenoidectomy (TA); however, vocal results are usually poor. An alternative approach, resection of only the medial portion of the arytenoid (medial arytenoidectomy [MA]), has the potential for less vocal impairment, but may not provide a sufficient airway. Laryngeal resistance (LR) was measured in vivo and ex vivo in 12 adult mongrel dogs with bilateral laryngeal paralysis after TA, MA, or no surgery (controls). The LR was significantly lower than in controls in both TA

[An investigation of glottic movement and vocal cord evoked electromyography following unilateral cricoarytenoid joint injuries in rabbits].

The unilateral cricoarytenoid joints of rabbits were bluntly injured. Observations on glottic movement and vocal cord evoked electromyography were performed. The results confirm that injury of the cricoarytenoid joint always causes disturbances in ipsilateral vocal cord movement. But the evoked electrical activities of the ipsilateral vocal cord muscles were normal not only in acute stage but also in chronic stage. The above results may provide the experimental basis for clinical differentiation of disturbances in glottic movement.

The role of the posterior cricoarytenoid muscle in phonation: an electromyographic investigation in dogs.

The activity of the posterior cricoarytenoid muscle during respiration has been well investigated electromyographically. Its activity during phonation, however, has not been studied systematically. We, therefore, focused our attention on the phonatory activity of the posterior cricoarytenoid muscle to confirm whether it also contracts during phonation, as has been reported by some researchers. In our series of 12 adult dogs, the posterior cricoarytenoid was active in 11 dogs and inactive in one dog during phonation. Our present study also showed that the posterior cricoarytenoid activity was s

Upper airway obstruction in canine laryngeal paralysis.

The type and the severity of airway obstruction in 30 dogs with bilateral laryngeal paralysis was assessed, using tidal breathing flow-volume loop (TBFVL) analysis. The dogs had clinical evidence of mild-to-severe upper airway obstruction (ie, respiratory distress, exercise intolerance, stridor). Seventeen dogs had TBFVL consistent with a nonfixed (inspiratory) obstruction, 10 had TBFVL indicative of a fixed (inspiratory/expiratory) obstruction, and 3 had normal TBFVL. Analysis of TBFVL confirmed that dogs with laryngeal paralysis have upper airway obstruction that differs in type and severity

Differential association of high- and low-frequency rat vocalizations with breathing and locomotion during social interactions.

Rodents, including rats, utilize vocalizations as a primary mode of social communication. While high-frequency ultrasonic vocalizations (USVs) have been extensively explored in laboratory rats, low-frequency (<10 kHz) vocalizations (LFVs) were first described only recently, and it is as yet unclear whether these two types of vocalizations are driven by the same behavioral mechanisms. This study investigates the behavioral distinctions between USVs and LFVs in socially interacting rats. In line with previous studies, we found that USVs, mostly associated with social interactions, are emitted du

Alpha-synuclein overexpression does not cause vocalization deficits in a mouse model of parkinsonism.

Voice deficits are common in Parkinson's disease (PD) and significantly impact quality of life by increasing stress, social isolation, and caregiver burden. However, despite this impact, there are currently no treatments that target the underlying pathophysiology of PD in the vocalization system. The goal of this study was to examine the effect of one possible underlying mechanism responsible for the complex voice deficits that exist in PD; overexpression of the protein alpha-synuclein. Results show that overexpression of alpha-synuclein, prior to the development of alpha-synuclein aggregate p

Ultrasonic vocalizations during male-female interaction in the mouse model of Down syndrome Ts65Dn.

Down syndrome (DS) is the leading cause of genetically defined intellectual disability. Although speech and language impairments are salient features of this disorder, the nature of these phenotypes and the degree to which they are exacerbated by concomitant oromotor dysfunction and/or hearing deficit are poorly understood. Mouse models like Ts65Dn, the most extensively used DS animal model, have been critical to understanding the genetic and developmental mechanisms that contribute to intellectual disability. In the present study, we characterized the properties of the ultrasonic vocalization

Vocal and territorial behavior in the Smith frog (Hypsiboas faber): relationships with plasma levels of corticosterone and testosterone.

The possible trade-off between the roles of glucocorticoids as facilitators of energy substrate mobilization and neural inhibitors of sexual behavior during breeding season is under debate. We studied the relationship between calling and territorial behavior with plasma levels of corticosterone (CORT) and plasma levels of testosterone (T) across the breeding season of Hypsiboas faber, a large and territorial Neotropical treefrog. We investigated these relationships through focal observations of males calling naturally, followed by blood sampling for hormonal radioimmunoassay. We additionally u
