Background/Objectives: The healing rate of wounds resulting from postoperative abdominal surgery interventions increases as the inflammation and infections in the wound are reduced. However, antibiotic resistance among microorganisms increases the incidence of surgical site infections (SSIs). Therefore, the need for new products that exhibit antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory activities, in addition to antibiotics, is increasing. Methods: Silver nanoparticles (CO-AgNPs) were obtained using the green synthesis technique with Cydonia oblonga L. leaves, which constitute a significant amount of w

The production of aromatic hydrocarbons from the waste tire pyrolysis attracts more and more attention because of its tremendous potential. Based on styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR), which is the main rubber in the waste passenger car tires, this work studies the temperature influence on primary pyrolysis product distribution by experimental techniques (Py-GC/MS, TG-MS), and then, the formation mechanism of monocyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (MAHs) observed in the experiment was analyzed by first-principles calculations. The experimental results show that the MAHs during the pyrolysis mainly inclu

The aim of the circular economy is to treat waste as a valuable raw material, reintegrating it into the industrial economy and extending the lifecycle of subsequent products. Efforts to reduce the production of hard-to-recycle waste are becoming increasingly important to manufacturers, not only of consumer goods but also of specialized items that are difficult to manufacture, such as medical supplies, which have now become a priority for the European Union. The purpose of the study is to manufacture a novel human-purified type I collagen membrane from bone remnants typically discarded during t

Plastic is one of the threats to the environment and human health, though it has contributed to the development of society in the past 150 years. Due to its diverse properties, lightweight, strong, heat resistant, highly convenient, waterproof, corrosion-resistant, non-biodegradable, and economical, it is popular in many applications. However, its non-biodegradable nature makes it a hazardous substance, and thus, it should be eliminated. The researchers have tried to convert this waste into valuable products from carbon-based material. These carbon-based materials include carbon nanotubes, car

Composting has emerged as a suitable method to convert or transform organic waste including manure, green waste, and food waste into valuable products with several advantages, such as high efficiency, cost feasibility, and being environmentally friendly. However, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), mainly malodorous gases, are the major concern and challenges to overcome in facilitating composting. Ammonia (NH3) and volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs), including hydrogen sulfide (H2S), and methyl mercaptan (CH4S), primarily contributed to the malodorous gases emission during the entire composting

Dredged soil and phosphogypsum (PG) are waste materials that must be treated to reduce their negative environmental effects. Guided by the concept of waste treatment, this study proposed the use of PG as a supplementary cementitious material to stabilize waste-dredged soil, and calcium aluminate cement (CAC) was selected to further improve the strength of the cement-treated dredged soil. Several laboratory tests were conducted to investigate the pH, unconfined compressive strength (UCS), and failure strain of the cement-treated soils in different proportions. Microstructural and mineralogical

The global agricultural sector faces increasing pressure to manage the substantial volumes of waste generated throughout pumpkin production, processing, and utilization, which traditionally represents both an economic burden and an environmental liability. This paper explores the valorization of pumpkin waste within a circular bioeconomy framework, evaluating the conversion of heterogeneous pumpkin-derived biomass into value-added food, nutraceutical, environmental, material, and energy products. Through a comprehensive synthesis of contemporary research, this paper demonstrates that pumpkin r

Metabolic byproducts have conventionally been disregarded as waste products without functions. In this opinion article, we bring to light the multifaceted role of methylmalonic acid (MMA), a byproduct of the propionate metabolism pathway mostly commonly known as a clinical biomarker of vitamin B12 deficiency. MMA is normally present at low levels in the body, but increased levels can come from different sources, such as vitamin B12 deficiency, genetic mutations in enzymes related to the propionate pathway, the gut microbiota, and aggressive cancers. Here, we describe the diverse metabolic and …

The electrochemical conversion of waste CO2 into useful fuels and chemical products is a promising approach to reduce CO2 emissions; however, several challenges still remain to be addressed. Thus far, most CO2 reduction studies use pure CO2 as the gas reactant, but CO2 emissions typically contain a number of gas impurities, such as nitrogen oxides, oxygen gas, and sulfur oxides. Gas impurities in CO2 can pose a significant obstacle for efficient CO2 electrolysis because they can influence the reaction and catalyst. This Minireview highlights early examples of CO2 reduction studies using mixed-

Sleep is evolutionarily conserved across all species, and impaired sleep is a common trait of the diseased brain. Sleep quality decreases as we age, and disruption of the regular sleep architecture is a frequent antecedent to the onset of dementia in neurodegenerative diseases. The glymphatic system, which clears the brain of protein waste products, is mostly active during sleep. Yet the glymphatic system degrades with age, suggesting a causal relationship between sleep disturbance and symptomatic progression in the neurodegenerative dementias. The ties that bind sleep, aging, glymphatic clear…

Thermal treatment of 2,4,6-trichlorophenol on a magnesium silicate-based model fly ash in the temperature range between 250 degrees C and 400 degrees C leads predominantly to carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide. The fraction of 2,4,6-trichlorophenol which is oxidized to CO and CO2 increases from 3% at 250 degrees C to 75% at 400 degrees C. Further products are polychlorinated benzenes, dibenzo-p-dioxins, dibenzofurans and phenols. The homologue and isomer patterns of the chlorobenzenes suggest chlorination in the ipso-position of the trichlorophenol. The formation of PCDD from 2,4,6-trichloroph

This study developed an integrated approach combining steam explosion pretreatment with enzymatic hydrolysis to isolate umami peptides from tuna (Thunnus obesus) bone by-products. Steam explosion enhanced the hydrolysis efficiency and increased the degree of hydrolysis from 9% to 18%. The ultrafiltration fraction below 3 kDa exhibited pronounced umami and saltiness-enhancing properties. Peptidomics and virtual screening identified three collagen-derived peptides (GPRGAPGPA, GPAGRPGPQ, GAQGPVGAPGPK) with umami detection thresholds between 0.15 and 0.45 mM. Molecular docking and dynamics simulat

Micro(nano)plastics are important emerging contaminants and a current research hotspot in the environmental field. Micro(nano)plastics widely exist in various organic wastes such as waste sludge, food waste (FW) and livestock manure and often enter into digesters along with anaerobic digestion (AD) treatment of these wastes, thereby exerting extensive and profound influences on anaerobic process performance. This study reviews sources of micro(nano)plastics and their pathways entering the anaerobic system and summarizes the quantities, sizes, shapes and micromorphology of various micro(nano)pl

Butanol is a more desirable second-generation biomass energy source. Acetone-butanol-ethanol (ABE) fermentation using Clostridium spp. is a promising method for butanol production. However, the toxicity of butanol to the producing strains leading to its low yield and the high cost of feedstock are the main obstacles limiting the ABE fermentation industry. In this study, to enhance the butanol tolerance and production in Clostridium beijerinckii D9, the strategies of metabolic engineering and process regulation were employed. With this effort, a recombinant strain D9/pykA was successfully devel

The influence of adding surfactants on the performance of high-solid anaerobic digestion of horticultural waste was extensively investigated in batch systems. Adding Tween series and polyethylene glycol series non-ionic surfactants had positive effects on biogas production, resulting in 370.1 mL/g VS and 256.6 mL/g VS with Tween 60 and polyethylene glycol 300 at a surfactant-to-grass mass ratio of 0.20, while the biogas production of anaerobic digestion without surfactants was 107.54 mL/g VS. The optimal and economically feasible choice was adding Tween 20 at a ratio of 0.08 g/g grass in high-
