[Non-alcoholic steatohepatitis].

Non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) is a chronic liver disease that occurs in patients with no significant alcohol consumption; it is not histologically different from alcoholic hepatitis because it presents macrovesicular steatosis, hepatocellular necrosis, mixed inflammatory infiltrate, and various stages of fibrosis in addition Mallory bodies in some patients. Some authors have even described NASH as a benign disease; however, it is presently considered a potentially serious disease that may evolve into liver cirrhosis and probably, liver cancer. It is more often related to female sex, obe

Psychotic manifestations of alcoholism.

Individuals often have comorbid elements of several disorders, and the psychotic phenomenon are often diverse. The psychotic manifestations of alcohol withdrawal, delirium tremens, alcohol hallucinosis, Wernicke's-Korsakoff's psychosis, alcohol pellagra and hepatic encephalopathy, Marchiafava-Bignami, central pontine myelinosis, and alcohol dementia are discussed in this article.

Alcohol-related diarrhea.

Abstract Alcohol generates a large caloric yield without supplying any essential nutrients; alcoholics may thus maintain body weight while suffering from malnutrition. In addition, diarrhea is a common complaint of both acute and chronic alcoholics. Here, we review the effects of alcohol on gastrointestinal morphology, function, its nervous system and motility. Acute morphological changes such as erosions, inflammatory cell infiltrations and microvascular changes are seen in the stomach and small intestine in acute alcoholics. In addition, atrophic gastritis, reduced villous height and decreas…

[Alcohol and sleep disorders].

Despite an initial sedative effect, alcohol disrupts sleep persistently and should not be used as a sleeping aid. Nocturnal withdrawal symptoms may lead to an increased duration of wakefulness, and to tachycardia and sweating in the second half of the night. It is not known by which mechanism alcohol affects sleep; however, effects do not appear to depend on the stimulation of benzodiazepine receptors or the antagonism at adenosine receptors. Alcohol can exacerbate primary sleep disturbances such as sleep apnea and nocturnal myoclonus, and thereby contribute to excessive daytime sleepiness. Th

Alcohol and injury in adolescents.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the frequency of alcohol ingestion in adolescent victims of major trauma and determine whether alcohol ingestion is associated with increased injury severity or death. METHODS: Subjects were all patients between 12-25 years of age treated at Pennsylvania trauma centers in 1996 who were reported to the state trauma database. Data on age, mechanism of injury (E-code), blood alcohol concentration (BAC), Injury Severity Score (ISS), and survival were obtained from the state database. BAC positive and negative patients within three groups: ages 12-17, 18-20, and 21-25, were

Alcohol and porphyrin metabolism.

Alcohol is a porphyrinogenic agent which may cause disturbances in porphyrin metabolism in healthy persons as well as biochemical and clinical manifestations of acute and chronic hepatic porphyrias. After excessive consumption of alcohol, a temporary, clinically asymptomatic secondary hepatic coproporphyrinuria is observable, which can become persistent in cases of alcohol-induced liver damage. Nowadays, the alcohol-liver-porphyrinuria syndrome is the first to be mentioned in secondary hepatic disturbances of porphyrin metabolism. Acute hepatic porphyrias (acute intermittent porphyria, variega
