Ophthalmologic outcome after third cranial nerve palsy or paresis in childhood.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the causes and ophthalmologic outcome of oculomotor nerve palsy or paresis in children yo … ith a mean follow-up of 3.6 years (range, 0.5 to 13 years). Visual acuities were reduced because of amblyopia in 35% and nonamblyopic factors in 25% of patients in the long-term outcome group at last follow-up. The best response to amblyopia therapy was in the congenital group, in which all patients improved to normal visual acuity. Strabismus surgery was p …

Persistent pupillary membranes.

Extensive persistent pupillary membranes which occlude the pupil may occur in isolation or in association with other ocular anomalies. Amblyopia may result if the membranes are extensive. We favor nonsurgical intervention except if unusual circumstances are present as demonstrated in one of our two cases.

Vitreous Hemorrhage Induced by a Persistent Hyaloid Artery.

BACKGROUND: The hyaloid artery is a branch of the ophthalmic artery and part of the fetal hyaloid vascular system; failure of these fetal vessels to regress can lead to a persistent hyaloid artery (PHA). PHA can induce complications, including amblyopia, cataracts, glaucoma, vitreous hemorrhage, and retinal detachment. We present a case of vitreous hemorrhage secondary to traction of the PHA in an infant treated for threshold retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). CASE PRESENTATION: A 660-g female infant was born at 23 weeks of gestation and was found to have bilateral Stage 3 Zone 2 ROP with plus…

Verteporfin photodynamic therapy for the treatment of choroidal haemangioma associated with Sturge-Weber syndrome.

PURPOSE: Choroidal haemangiomas associated with Sturge Weber syndrome most commonly affect the posterior pole and consequently result in amblyopia. Treatment is often challenging but usually unwarranted unless there is visual deterioration caused by exudative or neovascular complications. The main objective is to demonstrate the effectivity of photodynamic therapy in this context. DESIGN AND METHODS: Retrospective analysis of prospectively collected data regarding verteporfin photodynamic therapy (PDT) in the treatment of patients with choroidal haemangiomas associated with Sturge Weber syndr…

Results of CAM therapy in amblyopic patients.

AIM: to evaluate changes in visual acuity and compliance after CAM therapy in patients that initially failed to respond to occlusion or were non-compliant. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Twenty nine patients aged 4-10 years that failed to improve under occlusion therapy were included in this prospective study. Patients were divided into two groups according to the age (16 patients of 4-7 years of age and 13 patients of 8-10 years of age) and two other groups according to the type of amblyopia (15 anisometropic and 14 strabismic cases). CAM stimulation was prescribed to all patients for six days. Occlu…

Visual depth perception in normal and deprived rats: effects of environmental enrichment.

A proper maturation of stereoscopic functions requires binocular visual experience and early disruption of sensory-driven activity can result in long-term or even permanent visual function impairment. Amblyopia is one paradigmatic case of visual system disorder, with early conditions of functional imbalance between the two eyes leading to severe deficits of visual acuity and depth-perception abilities. In parallel to the reduction of neural plasticity levels, the brain potential for functional recovery declines with age. Recent evidence has challenged this traditional view and experimental par…

Visual acuity in esotropic cats following occlusion of the non-deviating eye.

The present study examined the possibility that strabismic amblyopia may be explained in terms of binocular competition. This was done by measuring visual acuity in strabismic kittens whose deviating eye was placed at an advantage over the other. Four groups of kittens were studied: Normal/Normal (N/N); Lid-sutured/Normal (LS/N); Strabismic/Normal (S/N); Strabismic/Lid-sutured (S/LS). In conditions 2-4 kittens underwent lateral rectus section and/or unilateral lid suture around the time of natural eye opening. Visual acuity measurements were made using the jumping stand technique and the follo…

Non-fusable stimuli and the role of binocular inhibition in normal and pathologic vision, especially strabismus.

Stimuli on corresponding points of both retinae that cannot be fused may cause binocular rivalry: the stimuli suppress each other alternatel … he hypothesis that there is a common neural mechanism causing both binocular rivalry and functional amblyopia in anisometropia and strabismus. Consequences of the results on rivalry suppression for the pathophysiology and therapy of strabismic amblyopia are discussed.
