Does mass azithromycin distribution impact child growth and nutrition in Niger? A cluster-randomized trial.

BACKGROUND: Antibiotic use on animals demonstrates improved growth regardless of whether or not there is clinical evidence of infectious disease. Antibiotics used for trachoma control may play an unintended benefit of improving child growth. METHODOLOGY: In this sub-study of a larger randomized controlled trial, we assess anthropometry of pre-school children in a community-randomized trial of mass oral azithromycin distributions for trachoma in Niger. We measured height, weight, and mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC) in 12 communities randomized to receive annual mass azithromycin treatment o

Host phylogeny and microbiome composition predict gut nematode community composition within a diverse assemblage of African herbivores.

Gut nematodes influence animal health and fitness, with effects shaped by their abundance and community composition. While closely related host species tend to harbour similar nematodes, the relative roles of host ecology and phylogeny in structuring nematode communities remain unclear. Here, we assess how host holobiont traits-body size, diet, space use, potentially pathogenic gut microbes and overall gut microbiome composition-predict gut nematode abundance and composition, while controlling for host phylogenetic relatedness. We jointly analyse DNA metabarcoding data on nematodes, microbiome

High-generation tetracyclines shifted microbial community composition and induced the emergence of antibiotic resistant bacteria in soil.

Tetracyclines (TCs) have been widely detected in agricultural soil due to their widespread use in animal husbandry. The impact of low-generation TCs, i.e., the first- and second- generations, on soil ecosystem has attracted widespread attention. However, the dynamic response of soil microbial community to high-generation TCs, i.e., the third- and fourth- generations, remains largely unknown. Herein, we characterized the variations in the composition, diversity and succession of microbial community and the proliferation of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) under the stress of four generations

Experiences of Homeless Recipients of Social Model Hospice Care: A Photovoice Exploration.

Homelessness and caregiver insecurity are barriers to accessing hospice for end-of-life care. Some communities have implemented a community-based social model of hospice care, and reports of its characteristics and outcomes are growing in hospice and homeless literature. This case report explored the experiences of social model hospice recipients using photovoice, a community-based participatory method to photograph meaningful aspects of care. Participants (n = 3) took photos (n = 93), journaled, and participated in semistructured interviews as co-analyzers. Through deductive codes from the li

Hemispheric Specialization for Processing the Communicative and Emotional Content of Vocal Communication in a Social Mammal, the Domestic Pig.

In humans, speech perception is lateralized, with the left hemisphere of the brain dominant in processing the communicative content and the right hemisphere dominant in processing the emotional content. However, still little is known about such a division of tasks in other species. We therefore investigated lateralized processing of communicative and emotionally relevant calls in a social mammal, the pig (Sus scrofa). Based on the contralateral connection between ears and hemispheres, we compared the behavioural and cardiac responses of 36 young male pigs during binaural and monaural (left or

Design strategies for hydrogels with paracrine effects and their ability to promote wound healing: status and development.

Wound healing is a complex process involving various stages such as hemostasis, inflammation, cell proliferation, and tissue remodeling. If a wound fails to heal promptly, it can lead to ulcers, necrosis, and even limb amputation, resulting in significant losses. Over the years, many clinical studies have explored the role of dressings in wound healing. Although numerous dressings have been introduced to the market, traditional ones typically influence only external factors such as temperature, humidity, and pH, often causing issues like excessive moisture or dryness, allergic reactions, secon

Humans 40,000 y ago developed a system of conventional signs.

As humans, we store and share information. This allows us to distribute knowledge necessary for survival and to coordinate large groups. Our hominin ancestors harnessed the surfaces of mobile artifacts and cave walls as information carriers since the Paleolithic time period. Theories abound as to the meaning and function of these Paleolithic signs. However, very little is known about their basic, measurable properties. We here analyze a corpus of more than 200 mobile objects of a 43,000 to 34,000 y old Aurignacian culture-associated with the first modern humans to settle in Central Europe. The

Migrasomes: new communicators between cells.

Migrasomes are a recently discovered class of organelles, typically generated at the intersections and tips of retraction fibers (RFs) in migrating cells. These monolayer vesicular structures encapsulate a variety of bioactive molecules and have been shown to participate in essential physiological processes, including intercellular communication, embryonic development, immune microenvironment modulation, and mitochondrial homeostasis. Beyond their physiological roles, accumulating evidence has revealed that migrasomes are also closely associated with the pathogenesis of various diseases. These

Skeletal interfaces in health and disease - Where two worlds interact: The Salzburg Leopoldina Symposium 2025 - Bridging disciplines and perspectives.

INTRODUCTION: The Leopoldina Symposium on "Skeletal Interfaces in Health and Disease" at Paracelsus Medical University (Salzburg, Austria) gathered an interdisciplinary community of young and experienced scientists, to explore how crossing disciplinary boundaries can generate new insights and methodologies. While research traditionally focuses on organ- or disease-specific questions, this symposium aimed to connect seemingly distant scientific fields by exploring interfaces, pivotal zones of separation and integration. It intended to foster broader understanding of musculoskeletal biology and

Interaction of low-density neutrophils with other immune cells in the mechanism of inflammation.

Low-density neutrophils (LDNs) are a unique subpopulation of neutrophils, play a significant role in regulating innate and adaptive immunity in various inflammation-related diseases. Emerging evidence suggests that LDNs play a significant role in the pathogenesis and progression of various diseases, including infections, autoimmune disorders, and cancer. In this review, we address the origin, development, and heterogeneity of LDNs, and the roles of LDNs in system homeostasis and diseases. We will focus on the findings of the interaction between LDNs and other immune cells. We will then discuss

Cardiac regeneration: Unraveling the complex network of intercellular crosstalk.

The heart is composed of multiple cell types, including cardiomyocytes, endothelial/endocardial cells, fibroblasts, resident immune cells and epicardium and crosstalk between these cell types is crucial for proper cardiac function and homeostasis. In response to cardiac injury or disease, cell-cell interactions and intercellular crosstalk contribute to remodeling to compensate reduced heart function. In some vertebrates, the heart can regenerate following cardiac injury. While cardiomyocytes play a crucial role in this process, additional cell types are necessary to create a pro-regenerative m

Extracellular Vesicles: Recent Advances and Perspectives.

Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are nanoscale, membrane-enclosed structures that are secreted by nearly all cell types. EVs include small EVs (exosomes), large EVs (microvesicles), and apoptotic bodies, which are distinguished by their biogenesis and size. EV biogenesis involves endosomal pathways or direct budding from the plasma membrane, influenced by cellular states and external stimuli. The complex composition of EVs, proteins, lipids, RNA, DNA, and metabolites reflects their cell of origin, enabling EVs to mediate intercellular communication. EV uptake by recipient cells occurs via endocyto

Astrocyte-Microglia Crosstalk: A Novel Target for the Treatment of Migraine.

Migraine is a pervasive neurologic disease closely related to neurogenic inflammation. The astrocytes and microglia in the central nervous system are vital in inducing neurogenic inflammation in migraine. Recently, it has been found that there may be a crosstalk phenomenon between microglia and astrocytes, which plays a crucial part in the pathology and treatment of Alzheimer's disease and other central nervous system diseases closely related to inflammation, thus becoming a novel hotspot in neuroimmune research. However, the role of the crosstalk between microglia and astrocytes in the pathog

MicroRNA-enriched exosome as dazzling dancer between cancer and immune cells.

Exosomes are widely recognized for their roles in numerous biological processes and as intercellular communication mediators. Human cancerous and normal cells can both produce massive amounts of exosomes. They are extensively dispersed in tumor-modeling animals' pleural effusions, ascites, and plasma from people with cancer. Tumor cells interact with host cells by releasing exosomes, which allow them to interchange various biological components. Tumor growth, invasion, metastasis, and even tumorigenesis can all be facilitated by this delicate and complex system by modifying the nearby and remo

Cell-cell interactions between transplanted retinal organoid cells and recipient tissues.

The transplantation of human organoid-derived retinal cells is being studied as a potentially viable strategy to treat vision loss due to retinal degeneration. Experiments in animal models have demonstrated the feasibility of organoid-derived photoreceptor transplantation in various recipient contexts. In some cases, vision repair has been shown. However, recipient-donor cell-cell interactions are incompletely understood. This review briefly summarizes these interactions, categorizing them as synaptic structure formation, cellular component transfer, glial activation, immune cell infiltration,

Capturing Small Molecule Communication Between Tissues and Cells Using Imaging Mass Spectrometry.

Imaging mass spectrometry (IMS) has routinely been applied to three types of samples: tissue sections, spheroids, and microbial colonies. These sample types have been analyzed using matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) to visualize the distribution of proteins, lipids, and metabolites across the biological sample of interest. We have developed a novel sample preparation method that combines the strengths of the three previous applications to address an underexplored approach for identifying chemical communication in cancer, by seeding mamm

Exosomes in the context of Toxoplasma gondii – host communication.

Extracellular vesicles – EV’s, including exosomes, are known to be essential tools of intercellular communication, enabling the exchange of information without direct contact between cells. Exosomes are secreted both in vitro and in vivo by single- and multi-cellular organisms, regardless of their type, and play an essential role in cell-to-cell communication. EV’s may carry various materials and ongoing studies have provided a new insight into their potential participation in various critical biological processes, including carcinogenesis, protein trafficking, immunostimulation and pathogenes

The Different Faces of the Pancreatic Islet.

Type 1 diabetes (T1D) patients who receive pancreatic islet transplant experience significant improvement in their quality-of-life. This comes primarily through improved control of blood sugar levels, restored awareness of hypoglycemia, and prevention of serious and potentially life-threatening diabetes-associated complications, such as kidney failure, heart and vascular disease, stroke, nerve damage, and blindness. Therefore, beta cell replacement through transplantation of isolated islets is an important option in the treatment of T1D. However, lasting success of this promising therapy depen

Paracrine control of vascular innervation in health and disease.

Proper vascular regulation is of paramount importance for the control of blood flow to tissues. In particular, the regulation of peripheral resistance arteries is essential for several physiological processes, including control of blood pressure, thermoregulation and increase of blood flow to central nervous system and heart under stress conditions such as hypoxia. Arterial tone is regulated by the periarterial autonomic nervous plexus, as well as by endothelium-dependent, myogenic and humoral mechanisms. Underscoring the importance of proper vascular regulation, defects in these processes can
