White-matter microstructural alterations in patients with functional constipation: A tract-based spatial statistics study.

BACKGROUND: Highly prevalent functional constipation (FC) belongs to the category of functional gastrointestinal disorders. Neuroimaging studies have demonstrated brain functional and morphometric changes in patients with FC. However, whether FC is associated with white-matter (WM) microstructural alterations remains unclear. METHODS: Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) and tract-based spatial statistics (TBSS) were introduced to investigate WM microstructural changes as calculated by fractional anisotropy (FA), mean (MD), axial (AD), and radial diffusivity (RD) in 26 FC patients and 31 healthy co…

Lateralization effects in brain white matter reorganization in patients with unilateral idiopathic tinnitus: a preliminary study.

Idiopathic tinnitus can cause significant auditory-related brain structural and functional changes in patients. However, changes in patterns … o found that compared with the RSIT group, the LSIT group showed significantly increased fractional anisotropy (FA) in the body of the corpus callosum (CC), left cingulum, and right superior longitudinal fasciculus (SLF) and decreased mean diffusivity (MD) in the body of CC. Moreover, relative to the RSIT group, the LSIT group also exhibited increases in WM …

Elucidating the relationship between white matter structure, demographic, and clinical variables in schizophrenia-a multicenter harmonized diffusion tensor imaging study.

White matter (WM) abnormalities are repeatedly demonstrated across the schizophrenia time-course. However, our understanding of how demographic and clinical variables interact, influence, or are dependent on WM pathologies is limited. The most well-known barriers to progress are heterogeneous findings due to small sample sizes and the confounding influence of age on WM. The present study leverages access to the harmonized diffusion magnetic-resonance-imaging data and standardized clinical data from 13 international sites (597 schizophrenia patients (SCZ)). Fractional anisotropy (FA) values for…

White matter deficits in cocaine use disorder: convergent evidence from in vivo diffusion tensor imaging and ex vivo proteomic analysis.

White matter (WM) abnormalities in patients with cocaine use disorder (CUD) have been studied; however, the reported effects on the human br … HC (n = 12). Compared with the HC, the CUD group showed significant reductions in global fractional anisotropy (FA) (p < 0.001), and an increase in global mean (MD) and radial diffusion (RD) (both p < 0.001). The results revealed that FA, RD, and MD alterations in the CUD group were widespread along the major WM tracts, after analysis using the tract-based s …

The importance of axonal directions in the brainstem injury during neurosurgical interventions.

Brainstem, which connects the distal part of the brain and the spinal cord, contains main motor and sensory nerves and facilitates communication between the cerebrum, cerebellum, and spinal cord. Due to the complicated anatomy and neurostructure of brainstem, surgical interventions to resect brainstem tumors are particularly challenging, and new approaches to reduce the risk of surgical brain injury are of utmost importance. Although previous studies have investigated the structural anisotropy of brain white matter, the effect of axonal fibers on the mechanical properties of white matter has n…

A meta-analysis of tract-based spatial statistics studies examining white matter integrity in cocaine use disorder.

Tract-based spatial statistics (TBSS) of diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) studies have consistently shown diminished white matter (WM) integrity for individuals with cocaine use disorder (CUD). The present study used seed-based d mapping (SDM) to determine the extent to which a systematic difference in the WM integrity of cocaine users may exist (as compared with that of healthy controls). Articles from 2006 (when TBSS was first developed) to present were reviewed, with eight selected for inclusion. Meta-analysis found lower fractional anisotropy (FA) in the genu of the corpus callosum for cocai…

A detailed mechanical and microstructural analysis of ovine tricuspid valve leaflets.

The tricuspid valve ensures unidirectional blood flow from the right atrium to the right ventricle. The three tricuspid leaflets operate wit … , under biaxial tension, the leaflets' mechanical behaviors exhibited unequal degrees of mechanical anisotropy. Most importantly, we found that the septal leaflet was stiffer in the radial direction and not the circumferential direction as with the other two leaflets. The differences we observed in leaflet microstructure coincide with the varying biaxial mec …

Breast ultrasound despeckling using anisotropic diffusion guided by texture descriptors.

Breast ultrasound (BUS) is considered the most important adjunct method to mammography for diagnosing cancer. However, this image modality suffers from an intrinsic artifact called speckle noise, which degrades spatial and contrast resolution and obscures the screened anatomy. Hence, it is necessary to reduce speckle artifacts before performing image analysis by means of computer-aided diagnosis systems, for example. In addition, the trade-off between smoothing level and preservation of lesion contour details should be addressed by speckle reduction schemes. In this scenario, we propose a BUS

Numerical modelling of fracture in human arteries.

We present 3D finite element models of atherosclerotic arteries, used to investigate the influence of the geometry and tissue properties on the plaque rupture caused by overexpansion. We adopted a geometry reconstructed from a contiguous set of in vitro magnetic resonance images of a damaged artery. The artery wall is divided in three layers (adventitia, media and intima) and is discretized into tetrahedral finite elements. The artery material is described with a hyperelastic two-fiber anisotropic model proposed by Holzapfel et al. 2000. A new constitutive framework for arterial wall mechanics

A review of diffusion tensor imaging studies in schizophrenia.

Both post-mortem and neuroimaging studies have contributed significantly to what we know about the brain and schizophrenia. MRI studies of volumetric reduction in several brain regions in schizophrenia have confirmed early speculations that the brain is disordered in schizophrenia. There is also a growing body of evidence suggesting that a disturbance in connectivity between different brain regions, rather than abnormalities within the separate regions themselves, are responsible for the clinical symptoms and cognitive dysfunctions observed in this disorder. Thus an interest in white matter fi

Band-Selective, Low-Dispersion Terahertz Attenuators Based on 3D Bulk Metamaterials Leveraging De-latticed Cross-Bar Resonator Ensembles.

Terahertz (THz) optical components for power attenuation and dispersion management require materials that provide isotropic and band-selective control of electromagnetic waves. However, two-dimensional (2D) metasurfaces based on coherent lattice coupling exhibit polarization anisotropy and angular dispersion, which lead to phase distortion. Here, three-dimensional (3D) bulk metamaterials (MMs) functioning as THz attenuators are proposed and experimentally demonstrated based on a de-latticing strategy inspired by amorphous natural materials. Periodic arrays of cross-bar meta-atoms are encapsula…

Study on the anisotropic characteristics of mechanical properties and energy evolution in layered phyllite.

To investigate the anisotropic characteristics of the mechanical properties and energy evolution in layered rock masses, conventional triaxi … phyllite exhibit a "U"-shaped distribution, first decreasing and then increasing, with significant anisotropy. However, the anisotropy of the Poisson's ratio is not pronounced. The increase in confining pressure enhances the mechanical properties of the layered phyllite and reduces its anisotropic behavior. The failure modes of the layered phyllite primaril …

Cerebrospinal fluid YKL-40 relates to white matter hyperintensity progression in females but not males over a 6-year period.

INTRODUCTION: Neuroinflammation may have sex-specific effects on white matter injury and impact the development of dementia. METHODS: Human chitinase-3-like protein-1 (YKL-40) concentrations at baseline were related to white matter hyperintensity (WMH) volume, free water (FW), and FW-corrected fractional anisotropy using linear effects models (for cross-sectional outcomes) and linear mixed-effects models (for longitudinal outcomes), adjusting for demographic and medical risk factors. Models were repeated with a sex-interaction term and then stratified by sex. RESULTS: In stratified analyses,…

Mapping the impact of age and APOE risk factors for late onset Alzheimer's disease on long range brain connections through multiscale bundle analysis.

Alzheimer's disease currently has no cure and is usually detected too late for interventions to be effective. In this study we have focused on cognitively normal subjects to study the impact of risk factors on their long-range brain connections. To detect vulnerable connections, we devised a multiscale, hierarchical method for spatial clustering of the whole brain tractogram and examined the impact of age and APOE allelic variation on cognitive abilities and bundle properties including texture e.g., mean fractional anisotropy, variability, and geometric properties including streamline length, …

High-efficiency and broadband asymmetric spin-orbit interaction based on high-order composite phase modulation.

Asymmetric spin-orbit interaction (ASOI) breaks the limitations in conjugate symmetry of traditional geometric phase metasurfaces, bringing new opportunities for various applications such as spin-decoupled holography, imaging, and complex light field manipulation. Since anisotropy is a requirement for spin-orbit interactions, existing ASOI mainly relies on meta-atom with C1 and C2 symmetries, which usually suffer from an efficiency decrease caused by the propagation phase control through the structural size. Here, we demonstrate for the first time that ASOI can be realized in meta-atoms with r…

Outcome Prediction by Diffusion Tensor Imaging (DTI) in Patients with Traumatic Injuries of the Median Nerve.

Background/Objectives: The accurate quantification of peripheral nerve axonal regeneration after injury is critically important. Current strategies are limited to detecting early reinnervation. DTI is an MRI modality permitting the assessment of fractional anisotropy, which increases with axonal regeneration. The aim of this pilot study is to evaluate DTI as a potential predictive factor of clinical outcome after median nerve section and microsurgical repair. Methods: We included 10 patients with a complete section of the median nerve, who underwent microsurgical repair up to 7 days after inju…
