Contact Lenses for Visual Habilitation in Infantile Aphakia: Long-Term Visual Outcomes and Factors Affecting Treatment Success.

PURPOSE: To present the long-term visual outcomes and factors affecting treatment success in children with congenital cataract surgery in infancy followed by optical correction by contact lens (CL). METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed data from 30 eyes of 26 pediatric aphakic patients followed by visual habilitation primarily by CL between 2004 and 2023. The patients were evaluated for factors affecting final best-corrected visual acuity (VA), need for additional surgery, and adherence to CL and occlusion therapy. RESULTS: The study included 16 eyes with idiopathic congenital cataract, 12 e

Iris-Claw Intraocular Lens and Scleral-Fixated Posterior Chamber Intraocular Lens Implantations in Correcting Aphakia: A Meta-Analysis.

PURPOSE: A meta-analysis to compare iris-claw intraocular lens (IC-IOL) and scleral-fixated posterior chamber intraocular lens (SF-PCIOL) implantations in correcting aphakia without sufficient capsular support. METHODS: Eligible studies were collected through PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, and the Cochrane library. The pooled relative risks (RR), pooled standardized mean difference (SMD), and their 95% confidence interval of the eligible studies were then calculated. Seven studies met our inclusion criteria, involving 232 and 158 eyes in IC-IOL and SF-PCIOL groups, respectively. RESULTS: Th

The role and efficacy of secondary intraocular lenses in the treatment of monocular infantile cataracts.

PURPOSE: To determine if and when a secondary intraocular lens (IOL) can be beneficial to the successful treatment of a monocular infantile cataract. METHODS: This retrospective study reviewed medical records of children undergoing treatment of a monocular congenital cataract from 1996 to 2009 at one pediatric ophthalmology practice. Patients had unilateral cataracts removed by age 8 months and a secondary IOL inserted prior to 6 years of age. At the final visit, the children had to perform linear Snellen visual acuity testing. RESULTS: Of 11 identified patients, 8 had treatment onset by age

Risk factors for the development of aphakic glaucoma after congenital cataract surgery.

BACKGROUND: It is well-known that lensectomy surgery during the first year of life increases one's risk of aphakic glaucoma. However, it is controversial whether there is a specific time period during the first year of life after which performing lensectomy surgery has a lower risk of aphakic glaucoma development. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A retrospective chart review was performed of all patients seen by a pediatric glaucoma specialist from 1970 to 2003. Patients were included in the study if they underwent congenital cataract surgery. Cataracts were defined as congenital if they were identified
