Assessing articulatory speed performance as a potential factor of slowed speech in older adults.

PURPOSE To improve our understanding about the underlying factors of aging-related speaking rate decline, the authors sought to determine if lip and jaw speeds are physiologically constrained in older adults. METHOD Thirty-six females-10 young adults (ages 22-27 years), 9 middle-aged adults (ages 45-55 years), 10 young-old adults (65-74 years), and 7 very old adults (ages 87-95 years)-completed metronome-paced syllable repetitions while moving the lower lip or jaw to a fixed target with each repetition. Metronome paces incrementally increased from 1.4 Hz to 6.7 Hz. Lip and jaw movements were t

Temporomandibular Joint Space Dimensions among Saudi Patients with Temporomandibular Disorders: MRI-Based Retrospective Study.

INTRODUCTION: The temporomandibular joint is a complex synovial joint in the body. It is the area in which the mandible articulates with the cranium. The temporomandibular joint space is located between the articular eminence and the glenoid fossa of the temporal bone at the base of the skull and the condylar process of the mandible. This interarticular space is divided into superior joint space (1.2 ml) and inferior joint space (0.9 ml) by the articular disc. The purpose of this study is to detect and evaluate the variations in the temporomandibular joint space among patients having temporoma

Comparison of Biomechanical Results about the Effect of Three Surgery Methods in Decompression of Lunate Bone.

Objective  Kienbock's disease is an unusual disorder caused by osteonecrosis and the collapse of lunate bone which leads to pain and a chronic decrease in wrist function. The treatments in this disease aim to relieve pain and maintain wrist function and movement. Various surgical procedures have been recommended for the subjects with Kienbock's disease; however, the main question posed here is which of the selected procedures are more successful in relief of the pressure applied on lunate. Methods and Materials  Computed tomography (CT) scan images of a normal subject were used to create a thr

Clinical Applications of Imaging Modalities of the Carpal Joint in Dogs with Particular Reference to the Carpal Canal.

The structure of the canine carpal joint is complex. This small joint consists of articulations that include the antebrachiocarpal, middle, carpometacarpal, and intercarpal joint surfaces. A large number of ligaments and tendons support and stabilise the carpus in dogs. Many injuries of this joint in dogs are not correctly recognised, diagnosed, or treated due to the limited use of diagnostic imaging methods. Radiography, the most common of them, has extensive application in diagnosing the causes of lameness in small animals. Other techniques, such as ultrasonography, computed tomography, and

Authors presented in comprehensive form updated knowledge concerning reasons and mechanisms of musculoskeletal back pain nonspecific symptom which in majority of cases, provides only little inside into the nature of the underlying problem. The physician must however find sufficient time to educate the patient as to the nature of this disorder and likely course during treatment. Understanding the source and mechanisms of the patients pain allows the physician and patient to approach the problem rationally with mutual confidence. The basic aim of the physician is exact identification of the anat

Speech and Language Changes During Rapid Eye Movement (REM) Sleep with Potential Diagnostic Markers: A Systematic Review.

Background: Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep behavior disorder (RBD) is a parasomnia resulting from degeneration of pontine and medullary circuits responsible for muscle atonia during REM sleep, leading to dream-enactment behaviors and vocalizations. It is strongly linked to α-synucleinopathies, particularly Parkinson's disease. Current biomarkers such as neurophysiological measures and imaging support diagnosis and monitoring, but remain invasive or costly. Aim: This study aims to evaluate vocal and speech alterations as exploratory, non-validated candidate biomarkers of REM sleep behavior diso

Minority stress and the development of problem alcohol use among sexual minority youth: A scoping review synthesizing multidisciplinary mechanisms of risk.

Beginning in adolescence, lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) individuals exhibit higher levels of problem alcohol use relative to heterosexual populations. Based in minority stress theory, psychological mediation frameworks of LGB psychopathology typically serve as explanatory models of these disparities, suggesting that LGB identity-related stressors lead to social and affect-related mechanisms that proximally influence alcohol use disorder risk. While stress and its psychological consequences are considered universal risk factors, minority stress research has yet to be synthesized with theory

Adolescents' implicit and explicit attitudes toward their peers with genetic conditions.

INTRODUCTION: Previous research has demonstrated that children lacking knowledge about genetic disorders may have harmful attitudes toward people with disabilities, but disability awareness can successfully modify these attitudes. We explored adolescents' implicit and explicit attitudes toward peers with genetic conditions to determine whether improved genetics/genomics literacy can mitigate the impact of ableism in this population. METHODS: English-speaking adolescents (10-18 years) from British Columbia were invited to complete a Disability Attitudes Implicit Association Test (DA-IAT) and p

A systematic scoping study exploring opioid use across a variety of disability conditions.

BACKGROUND: Opioid use experiences among people with disability (PWD) as a group has not been clearly articulated in the current literature, despite links between pain and measures of disability. OBJECTIVE: To conduct a systematic search and scoping study examining the characteristics of current literature focused on opioid use among PWD. METHODS: Four databases were queried (i.e., Medline, PsycINFO, Embase, and CINAHL) for peer-reviewed, empirical, English-language, journal articles focused on long-term opioid use among PWD. Collected data points included: disability details (specific condi

Personality as a predictor of symptomatic change in a residential treatment setting for anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa.

PURPOSE: Although personality has been widely researched in patients with anorexia nervosa (AN) and bulimia nervosa (BN), the nature of this relationship has not yet been clearly articulated. The pathoplasty model theorizes that personality might shape symptomatic presentation and thus affect therapeutic outcomes, but more research is needed. The present study aimed at investigating the predictive value of a broad spectrum of personality traits in determining AN and BN treatment outcomes, considering both the statistical and clinical significance of the therapeutic change. METHODS: Eighty-fou

Polysaccharide-based inflammatory microenvironment-responsive nanocarriers for ulcerative colitis: Advances in design, mechanisms, and therapeutic applications.

The worldwide incidence of ulcerative colitis (UC) continues to rise, presenting a growing public health challenge due to its multifactorial etiology and limited therapeutic options. While current therapeutic regimens can alleviate symptoms, they are plagued by constrained efficacy and significant side effects. Advances in nanotechnology have catalyzed the development of polysaccharide-based inflammatory microenvironment-responsive nanocarriers (PIMRNs), offering novel opportunities for UC management. PIMRNs exhibit excellent bioactivity, biocompatibility, and multifunctional modulation capabi

Rare trajectories in a prototypical mean-field disordered model: Insights into landscape and instantons.

For disordered systems within the random first-order transition (RFOT) universality class, such as structural glasses and certain spin glasses, the role played by activated relaxation processes is rich to the point of perplexity. Over the last decades, various efforts have attempted to formalize and systematize such processes in terms of instantons similar to the nucleation droplets of first-order phase transitions. In particular, Kirkpatrick, Thirumalai, and Wolynes proposed in the late 1980s an influential nucleation theory of relaxation in structural glasses. Already within this picture, ho

Associations between coherence and temporal parameters of narrative speech production in borderline personality disorder.

Narrative speech production (NSP), i.e., the conceptualization, linguistic formulation, and articulation of a story, is a multifaceted process underpinned by cognitive functions and mentalization ability, often impaired in individuals with borderline personality disorder (BPD). This study examines differences in coherence and temporal parameters between individuals with BPD and healthy controls (HCs) and explores associations between these factors in both groups. Spontaneous speech of 33 BPD and 31 HC individuals was recorded in three task types (telling their previous day, retelling a story,

Robotic thymectomy for myasthenia gravis surgical techniques and outcomes.

Myasthenia gravis (MG) is an autoimmune disorder in which antibodies are produced against post-synaptic acetylcholine receptors, thereby causing impairment of neuromuscular transmission. Diagnosis of MG is confirmed with the AChR antibody test and via an Electromyography. Although medical treatment with acetylcholinesterase inhibitors remains the main treatment of MG, in recent years thymectomy has become an integral part of the treatment algorithm. Numerous factors such as the Patient's age, presence of AChR antibodies, or MuSK antibody, the severity of disease affect the decision of preformi
