Reaction time variability and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder: is increased reaction time variability specific to attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder? Testing predictions from the default-mode interference hypothesis.

Increased reaction time variability (RTV) is one of the most replicable behavioral correlates of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). However, this may not be specific to ADHD but a more general marker of psychopathology. Here we compare RT variability in individuals with ADHD and those with other childhood internalizing and externalizing conditions both in terms of standard (i.e., the standard deviation of reaction time) and alternative indices that capture low-frequency oscillatory patterns in RT variations over time thought to mark periodic lapses of attention in ADHD. A total o

Elucidating Distinct and Common fMRI-Complexity Patterns in Preadolescent Children With Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, Oppositional Defiant Disorder, and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder.

OBJECTIVE: The pathophysiology of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is complicated by high rates of psychiatric comorbidities; thus, delineating unique vs shared functional brain perturbations is critical in elucidating illness pathophysiology. We investigated resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rsfMRI)-complexity alterations among children with ADHD, oppositional defiant disorder (ODD), and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), respectively, and comorbid ADHD, ODD, and OCD, within the cool and hot executive function (EF) networks. METHOD: We leveraged baseline d

Amygdala subnuclei volumes and anxiety behaviors in children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorder, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Alterations in the structural maturation of the amygdala subnuclei volumes are associated with anxiety behaviors in adults and children with neurodevelopmental and associated disorders. This study investigated the relationship between amygdala subnuclei volumes and anxiety in 233 children and adolescents (mean age = 11.02 years; standard deviation = 3.17) with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and children with obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), as well as typically developing (TD) children. Parents completed the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL),

A dynamic developmental theory of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) predominantly hyperactive/impulsive and combined subtypes.

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is currently defined as a cognitive/behavioral developmental disorder where all clinical criteria are behavioral. Inattentiveness, overactivity, and impulsiveness are presently regarded as the main clinical symptoms. The dynamic developmental behavioral theory is based on the hypothesis that altered dopaminergic function plays a pivotal role by failing to modulate nondopaminergic (primarily glutamate and GABA) signal transmission appropriately. A hypofunctioning mesolimbic dopamine branch produces altered reinforcement of behavior and deficient e

Impact of Serum Ferritin on the Pathophysiology of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder: What Is the Evidence?

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is one of the most prevalent neurobehavioral disorders in childhood. Although its pathophysiology is not fully understood, growing interest has focused on potentially modifiable factors, including iron metabolism. Serum ferritin, a marker of peripheral iron status, has been widely investigated in relation to ADHD due to iron's role in dopamine synthesis and neurodevelopment. This narrative evidence-based review aims to critically synthesize and interpret current clinical and mechanistic evidence regarding the association between serum ferritin le

Electronic Media Use and Symptoms of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder in Greek Adolescents.

Electronic media such as mobile phones, social media, computers, televisions, and video games are dominant in adolescents' lives. There is a growing concern that rising rates of electronic media use may be related to behavioral and emotional problems. The aim of the present study was to examine associations of adolescents' electronic media use with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms. Study participants were 99 adolescents (39 males, 60 females), 12-18 years old, as well as 93 parents (12 fathers and 81 mothers). Internet addiction was evaluated by the Internet Addiction T

Prenatal Exposure to Air Pollution and Risk for Attention-Deficit/hyperactivity Disorder in Children.

Exposure to air pollutants during early life may impair children's neurodevelopment and increase the risk of ADHD. The study aimed to explore the association between exposure to prenatal air pollutants and ADHD in the school population from Tarragona, Spain. Data were obtained from the EPINED study, a two-phase epidemiological research involving preschool-aged (4-5 years) and school-age (10-11 years) children. The screening phase assessed ADHD symptoms in 3,727 participants, followed by a diagnostic phase with 781 children (549 without ADHD, 174 with ADHD). Multivariable regression showed that

Body dysmorphic symptoms in autism and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder: A comorbidity study.

Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) is a persistently under-recognised psychiatric condition. Evidence suggests a degree of shared cognitive dysfunction and clinical presentation of BDD with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The current study is the first to investigate the co-occurrence of BDD, ASD and ADHD in a large online community sample. Utilising data from an online survey, we investigated the comorbidity frequency of BDD, ASD and ADHD, as well as the presence of possible undiagnosed BDD in these neurodevelopmental populations (N = 6844). Examining Motor Response Inhibition in Comorbid Trichotillomania and Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder.

Trichotillomania (TTM) has shown high rates of comorbidity with ADHD. While both disorders have been associated with some performance deficits on measures of motor response inhibition, findings on deficits in TTM have been mixed. Deficits previously found in TTM may be in part a reflection of the presence of comorbid ADHD in the TTM subsamples. We compared adults with self-reported TTM alone (n = 59) and those with self-reported TTM and ADHD (n = 61) to a healthy control group (n = 59) on two response inhibition measures, the Go/No-Go task and the Stop Signal Task. We hypothesized that those w

Sexual dysfunction and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder: A systematic review of bidirectional associations.

BACKGROUND: Sexual dysfunction (SD) and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are both prevalent in adults yet remain underdiagnosed, and their potential association has only recently received systematic attention. Emerging studies suggest a bidirectional link, but findings are heterogeneous across instruments, samples, and definitions. METHODS: We conducted a systematic search of PubMed/MEDLINE, ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar from inception to February 2025. We included observational studies of adults (≥18 years) reporting either SD in ADHD populations or ADHD in SD populations.

Exploring the Theoretical Potential of Benzphetamine in the Treatment of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).

Benzphetamine HCl (Didrex) is a Schedule III amphetamine indicated for the treatment of obesity. Amphetamine and methylphenidate are CNS stimulants regarded as the most effective treatment for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Currently, both classes comprise the nationwide shortage of stimulants used to treat ADHD. Benzphetamine is a prodrug yielding dextroamphetamine (Zenzedi) and dextromethamphetamine (formerly Desoxyn). Both metabolites hold FDA approval to treat ADHD, suggesting their potential to aid in the shortage. Nonetheless, the lack of data on the compound limits its
