Uncontrolled cell proliferation is the hallmark of cancer, and tumour cells have typically acquired damage to genes that directly regulate their cell cycles. Genes that link checkpoint controls to cancer and other related genetic disease include the TP53 and ATM genes. The abnormalities of these genes are clearly associated with particular forms of the B-cell chronic lymphocytic leukemia and poor prognosis.

The effect on B-lymphocytes of butyric acid, a metabolic by-product formed by selected anaerobic bacteria of the subgingival plaque and present in mM amounts in the crevicular fluid of patients affected by adult periodontitis was investigated. A dose-dependent inhibition of both mitogenesis and Ig production in B-cells challenged with formalinized Staphylococcus aureus, strain Cowan I (SAC), was observed. We have analysed the p53 status in non-progressive and progressive chronic B-cell leukemia (B-CLL) by ELISA, immunoprecipitation, FACS and cDNA sequencing in relation to in vitro proliferation in response to Staphylococcus aureus strain Cowan I (SAC) and IL-2. Lymphocyte response to staphylococcal enterotoxin B (SEB) was analysed in 11 cases with Sjögren syndrome (SjS) who developed annular erythema during the course. The results of cytogenetic studies are reported in 89 patients with B-cell CLL. LPS (E. coli lipopolysaccharide), PWM (pokeweed mitogen), PHA (phytohaemagglutinin), EBV (Epstein-Barr virus), TPA (phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate), and LA (leucoagglutinin) were used as mitogens. By using pairs of monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) to different epitopes on CD21 and CD23 antigens, it has been shown that both antigens are readily detectable in cell-free supernates of cultures of B cells expressing these antigens on the cell surface. The utilization of the nine major homology families of VH-genes was quantitated in the B lymphocyte response to Trypanosoma cruzi infection of C57BL/6 mice. We conducted a phase II trial of deoxycoformycin (pentostatin [DCF]) in chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL).
