Association of electronic nicotine delivery system (ENDS) and cigarette solo and dual use with alcohol-related consequences among US adults.

INTRODUCTION: Research reports a robust association between combustible cigarette use and alcohol use frequency and severity. Extension to the emerging landscape of electronic nicotine delivery system (ENDS) use is needed to inform prevention and treatment strategies. METHOD: We evaluated data from the 2020 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH). Respondents included adults reporting cigarettes or ENDS solo or dual use. Multivariable logistic regression models evaluated associations with alcohol use disorder (AUD) and alcohol-related risky behavior (i.e., heavy drinking, binge alcohol

Changes in cerebral CB1 receptor availability after acute and chronic alcohol abuse and monitored abstinence.

Involvement of the type 1 cannabinoid receptor (CB1R) in the effects of alcohol on the brain is supported by animal experiments, but how in vivo CB1R levels are altered in alcoholic patients is still unclear. To assess the short-time effects of a binge drinking episode on CB1R availability, 20 healthy social drinkers underwent [(18)F]MK-9470-positron emission tomography (PET) at baseline and after intravenous ethanol administration (ALC ACU). Moreover, 26 alcoholic patients underwent sequential CB1R PET after chronic heavy drinking (ALC CHR) and after 1 month of abstinence (ALC ABST). Seventee…

Cryptorchidism and maternal alcohol consumption during pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: Prenatal exposure to alcohol can adversely affect the fetus. We investigated the association between maternal alcohol consumption during pregnancy and cryptorchidism (undescended testis) among newborn boys. METHODS: We examined 2,496 boys in a prospective Danish-Finnish birth cohort study for cryptorchidism at birth (cryptorchid/healthy: 128/2,368) and at 3 months of age (33/2,215). Quantitative information on alcohol consumption (average weekly consumption of wine, beer, and spirits and number of binge episodes), smoking, and caffeine intake was obtained by questionnaire and/or i

Examining Trajectories of Alcohol and Tobacco Use in Canadian Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Gender-Diverse Midlife and Older Adults with Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging (CLSA) Data.

Lesbian, gay, bisexual (LGB) and transgender and gender-diverse (TGD) adults experience elevated alcohol and tobacco use relative to heterosexual and cisgender adults, yet longitudinal trajectories of these disparities in midlife and older adulthood remain underexplored. Using data from the first three waves of the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging (CLSA; N = 45,079), we examined trajectories of drinking frequency, binge drinking frequency, smoking frequency, and daily cigarette consumption among aging Canadian LGB and TGD adults compared to their heterosexual and cisgender counterparts. Li…

Posttraumatic stress and alcohol use among Hispanic/Latina survivors of interpersonal trauma: Associations with anxiety sensitivity and distress tolerance.

OBJECTIVE: Hispanic/Latina students experience elevated rates of binge drinking, interpersonal trauma, and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms. Research has indicated anxiety sensitivity (AS; i.e., fear of anxiety-related bodily sensations) and distress tolerance (DT; i.e., ability to tolerate negative emotional states) are modifiable psychological mechanisms related to alcohol use and PTSD symptoms. However, a dearth of literature has focused on factors that may account for associations between alcohol use and PTSD among Hispanic/Latina students. METHOD: The project examined, among…

Asian/Pacific Islander adolescent sexual orientation and suicide risk in Guam.

OBJECTIVES: We examined the effects of same-sex orientation on suicide risks for Guam's Asian/Pacific Islander adolescents. METHODS: We used a probability sample and logistic regression analysis to identify suicide risk factors. RESULTS: Same-sex orientation was associated with a greater risk of suicide attempt, especially for boys. Adolescents who reported suffering physical abuse in the context of a romantic relationship, engaging in binge drinking, and experiencing feelings of hopelessness were at greater risk for suicidal ideation and attempts. Race/ethnicity was associated with suicide …

Fetal Alcohol Syndrome and Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders.

Fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) and fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) result from intrauterine exposure to alcohol and are the most common nonheritable causes of intellectual disability. The percentage of women who drink or binge drink during pregnancy has increased since 2012. FAS is commonly missed or misdiagnosed, preventing affected children from receiving needed services in a timely fashion. Diagnosis is based on the presence of the following clinical features, all of which must be present: prenatal and/or postnatal growth retardation, facial dysmorphology, central nervous system dysfu

[Alcoholic ketoacidosis – a review].

Alcoholic ketoacidosis - a review A chronic alcoholic with severe metabolic acidosis presents a difficult diagnostic problem in the emergency room. Over and above methanol- and ethylene glycol intoxication, alcoholic ketoacidosis is a common but less recognized etiology. The disorder occurs in alcoholics who have had a recent binge drinking followed by the abrupt cessation of alcohol consumption because of abdominal pain and vomiting, with resulting dehydration, starvation, and then a β-hydroxybutyrate dominated ketoacidosis. Laboratory results may be misleading as the common urine-ketone test…

Reliability of retrospective estimates of alcohol consumption during pregnancy by recovering women alcoholics.

Twenty-six recovering women alcoholics were interviewed concerning their alcohol consumption during a pregnancy prior to their recovery. Several months later they were reinterviewed. Test-retest correlations were found to be high. Reliability was not related to the length of time since the pregnancy or to the test-retest interval. The frequency of consumption reported did not differ significantly from test to retest. However, the reported amount of consumption per occasion was significantly lower at the second interview. Reports of binge drinking were particularly unreliable. Results should be…
