An investigation into the possibility of transmission of tick-borne pathogens via blood transfusion. Transfusion-Associated Tick-Borne Illness Task Force.

BACKGROUND: Tick-borne illnesses were diagnosed in a group of National Guard members, including some who had donated blood a few days before the onset of symptoms. A voluntary recall of those blood components was issued and a multistate investigation was conducted to determine if transfusion-transmitted illness had occurred. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: Donors and recipients were asked to complete questionnaires regarding symptoms and risk factors for infection and to provide blood samples for laboratory analysis. RESULTS: Among National Guard personnel who donated blood, 12 individuals were fo

[Analysis of transfusion incident reports filed at 15 blood transfusion centers and health facilities during 17 months. Groupe Receveurs de laSFTS].

The principal result of the development of hemovigilance since 1994 has been the declaration of undesirable effects likely to be due to transfusions of labile blood products. Using the 1,694 cases of undesirable effects registered, it seemed worthwhile to us to analyze the distribution of the signs noticed, their frequency and the types of blood products responsible. This analysis allowed us to observe that the majority of reactions were shivery-feverish (47%) or allergic (24%). Most of them are linked to platelet concentrate transfusions especially simple donor platelets (with a frequency of

Progress in Development of Functional Biological and Synthetic Blood Products to Augment Transfusable Blood Supply in Operational Medicine.

A reliable, accessible, and high-quality blood supply is critical for the sustainment of any healthcare system. World events such as the COVID-19 pandemic have proven that maintaining the supply of blood presents a logistical challenge. The current blood supply is overseen by extensive donor programs around the world. In the United States, as in other countries, the need for blood has increased, with a decline in blood donations and increasing exclusions for blood donor qualification. While there is a need to improve blood donation participation, there is also need for new alternatives to trad

Blood group misinformation impacting the attendant's decision-making for a timely blood transfusion to their patient: An ethical dilemma.

In the third week of November 2024, a critical incident involving the refusal of a blood transfusion was reported at our hospital. The case involved a 65-year-old Indian patient who had been admitted for a proposed stoma closure surgery. Although the healthcare team deemed an urgent blood transfusion necessary as part of the patient's treatment plan, the transfusion was refused due to misinformation from the patient's attendants regarding the patient's original blood type. Their refusal was also driven by a fear of the potential consequences of an erroneous mismatched blood transfusion. The bl…

When are infection risks of blood transfusion tolerable? Towards understanding the ethical views of stakeholders in the blood supply.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The perception of transfusion-transmitted infections (TTIs) is sensitive to various concerns besides the probability and impact of infection, and some of these concerns may be ethically relevant. This paper aims to advance thinking about blood safety policies by exploring and explaining stakeholders' reasons to consider TTI risks tolerable or intolerable. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Inspired by critical empirical ethics and phenomenological hermeneutics, we held interviews and focus group discussions to explore the moral experience of policymakers, hematologists, blood d

Association of blood group and red blood cell transfusion with the incidence of antepartum, peripartum and postpartum venous thromboembolism.

The increased risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE) associated with pregnancy is well-known and prophylaxis guidelines consider a number of risk factors. Although non-O blood group and red blood cell (RBC) transfusion are known to be associated with VTE risk, their contribution to pregnancy-associated VTE has received little attention. This study was conducted in a population-based cohort of 1,000,997 deliveries to women with no prior history of VTE or thrombophilia. The independent contributions of ABO blood type and RBC transfusion to the risks of antepartum, peripartum and postpartum VTE are

The effects of blood transfusion on red blood cell distribution width in critically ill patients: a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Red blood cell distribution width (RDW) is a measure of anisocytosis, generally used in the differential diagnosis of anemia. Recently, RDW was associated with increased mortality in critically ill patients. Red blood cell (RBC) transfusions are potential confounders on RDW values interpretation. The aim of this study was to analyze the changes in RDW after RBC transfusion in intensive care unit (ICU) patients. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: This was a prospective, observational study including patients admitted to ICU requiring 1 RBC unit. We analyzed RDW values of the patients at fou

The prevalence of hepatitis B and C among blood donors at the National Blood Transfusion Center (CNTS) in Burundi.

INTRODUCTION: in Burundi, blood safety is one of the concerns of the Ministry of Public Health and Fight against AIDS. To this end, all donor blood bags must be screened for hepatitis B and C, that is the reason why the National Blood Transfusion Center (CNTS) has an Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA); better chain to perform these tests properly. This study aimed to highlight the prevalence of hepatitis B and C among blood donors at the National Blood Transfusion Center of Burundi for a period from the January the 1st to the 30th of June 2016. METHODS: this retrospective study was con…

[The present status of blood filtration--fundamentals and the clinical significance of leukocyte depletion and microaggregate filters in blood transfusion].

In this review the role of the latest generation of leukodepletion blood filters and the adverse reaction of leukocytes i.e. alloimmunisation, immunosuppression, nonhaemolytic febrile transfusion reaction, platelet refractoriness, transmission of infectious agents are described and discussed. Leukocyte-poor blood component is indicated for patients with a history of nonhaemolytic febrile transfusion reaction, in avoiding alloimmunisation in patients waiting for transplantation or platelet refractoriness and in preventing CMV-infection. In the review the role of microaggregate filters in transf

Development and content validity of an educational manual on nursing care in blood transfusion.

Blood transfusion is a frequent and high-risk clinical procedure that requires up-to-date technical knowledge and well-structured educational support to ensure patient safety. Despite its widespread use, there is a shortage of validated educational technologies specifically designed to support nursing education and professional training in transfusion care. This study aimed to develop and validate the content of an educational manual on nursing care in blood transfusion. Methodological study was conducted in two phases: development of the manual based on a scoping review and instructional desi…

A global survey of blood transfusion practices for patients with sickle cell disease.

BACKGROUND: Sickle cell disease (SCD) affects over 7 million people globally, with blood transfusion remaining a cornerstone of management. However, contemporary transfusion practices across diverse settings remain poorly characterized. We evaluated global transfusion practices for patients with SCD to identify gaps and inform resource prioritization. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional web-based survey of clinicians and laboratory professionals providing transfusion support for SCD, distributed via email using three professional society's membership lists (July-September…

Secondary hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis following blood transfusion in the absence of an identifiable trigger.

Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis is a life-threatening inflammatory syndrome resulting from uncontrolled immune activation. Secondary hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis is typically triggered by infection, malignancy, or autoimmune disease, though diagnosis is often difficult due to nonspecific findings. We present the case of a 55-year-old man with pancytopenia and fever following a blood transfusion. There were no clear infectious, malignant, or autoimmune triggers identified. Bone marrow biopsy showed no hemophagocytosis, but laboratory workup revealed hypertriglyceridemia, hyperferritine…

Designing an Interoperable Intelligent Agent for the Blood Transfusion Chain in Geneva, Switzerland.

INTRODUCTION: Blood supply chain management is a cornerstone of modern medicine, yet it faces persistent structural challenges, including unpredictable supply and demand, perishability, and fragmentation of information systems. These limitations can hinder real-time inventory visibility and complicate extended blood compatibility searches, particularly for poly-transfused patients at risk of alloimmunization. METHODS: We designed a proof-of-concept combining (1) an interoperable health data exchange pipeline based on HL7 FHIR, SNOMED-CT, and LOINC standards, and (2) an intelligent matching ag

Indications for and strategies to reduce blood transfusion for craniosynostosis surgery: a narrative review.

Surgical correction of craniosynostosis has historically been associated with substantial intraoperative blood loss. Given that these procedures are often performed on infants, even small amounts of blood loss can have serious clinical consequences. To mitigate this risk, patients younger than one year frequently receive perioperative blood transfusions. However, a better understanding of the risk profile of blood product transfusions in the modern era has affected indications for and rates of transfusion done in association with craniosynostosis surgery. In addition, the development of minima…
