Treatment of hip subluxation in Dyggve-Melchior-Clausen syndrome.

We report a case of Dyggve-Melchior-Clausen syndrome, a skeletal dysplasia with short trunk dwarfism and mental retardation. A Chiari pelvic osteotomy was performed to halt hip subluxation on both sides. The patient was evaluated after 9 years and 10 months. The progressive lateral migration of the femoral head seemed to have been unaffected by this type of osteotomy.

A further case of vertical transmission of proximal femoral focal deficiency?

We report on a newborn boy with congenital asymmetrically hypoplastic fibulae, lateral oligodactyly, and mild left ectrodactyly. The patient's grandfather had a short femoral shaft with a slightly smaller collodiaphyseal angle on the left as compared to the right side, probably a proximal focal femoral deficiency (PFFD). The upper limbs were not affected in either patient. PFFD in the grandfather and hypoplastic fibulae with lateral ray defects in the grandson raise the possibility of genetic transmission, specifically autosomal-dominant inheritance with variable penetrance and expressivity. Acetabular development in congenital dislocation on the hip.

Acetabular dysplasia is one of the most common complications in the treatment of congenital dislocation of the hip (CDH). Acetabular development is analyzed in a series of 47 children with 55 CDH with delayed diagnosis. Cases were studied on an overall basis and according to the type of reduction realized: closed (group 1) or open (group 2). The incidence of acetabular dysplasia in relation with the development of avascular necrosis (AN) of the hip during treatment was studied. Cases with an acetabular index (AI) of greater than 25 degrees two or more years after reduction were considered sugg

[Pseudohypoparathyroidism--a case report].

The clinical picture of pseudohypoparathyroidism described by Albright and co-workers represents a morphological, functional and laboratory-chemical combination of symptoms which in the classical case is characterized by proportionate nanism, round face, oligophrenia and neuromuscular overexcitability, radiological changes as well as hypocalcaemia and hyperphosphataemia in increased parathormone. On the basis of casuistics typical findings are demonstrated and discussed with the data in literature.

The Ring uncemented polyethylene cup in the abnormal acetabulum.

The results of using the Ring uncemented polyethylene-to-metal (UPM) prosthesis in patients with protrusio acetabuli or dysplasia are reported. Fifty-four cases of protrusio were analysed and a modified method of measuring the deformity is described; after operation, remodelling of the medial wall had improved, on average, by 29.6%. For the dysplastic acetabulum the main difficulty is the lack of lateral support for the cup. In order to test the hypothesis that this support improves with an uncemented prosthesis, 38 hips with an average follow-up of 31 months were studied. Lateral support, mea

The syndrome of mental handicap, cataracts, muscle wasting and skeletal abnormalities: report of a second case.

A severely mentally handicapped Caucasian male with cataracts, deafness, distal muscle wasting and skeletal abnormalities, including calcification of the pinnae, is described. The findings in this patient strongly resemble those in a male described in 1982 by Primrose, and it suggested that this unusual pattern of abnormalities constitutes a discrete entity, which we propose should be known as 'Primrose syndrome'.

Hypertelorism in neurofibromatosis.

In eight out of thirty-four patients with neurofibromatosis hypertelorism was seen. This hypertelorism was diagnosed by measuring the intercanthal distance and calculating the interpupillary distance from it. The high incidence of hypertelorism in our group of patients (24%) makes its direct association with neurofibromatosis feasible. Moreover, hypertelorism was found exclusively in neurofibromatosis patients with brain involvement (8 out 11) and therefore seems to herald a severe expression of Morbus Recklinghausen. The bones of the face and the base of the skull are mesenchymal structures o

The management of primary acetabular dysplasia. Its association with habitual side-lying.

Fifty-one infants with limited abduction of the hip and acetabular dysplasia were, between 1969 and 1975, treated with abduction-adduction exercises, administered by the parents; no abduction devices were used. In 1983 a follow-up examination was carried out on 41 of these patients. Although at birth these children had characteristics similar to patients with congenital dislocation of the hip, none of their hips dislocated. At birth acetabular measurements showed that half the children had severe dysplasia and the other half slight dysplasia; the difference between the affected and the healthy

Experimental epiphysial distraction producing and correcting angular deformities.

Angular deformities of the distal radius of 15 sheep were induced by asymmetrical epiphysial distraction. Eleven sheep were between 10 and 20 weeks old; four were older than 24 weeks. Gradual distraction on the medial side of the limb caused partial separation of the epiphysis from the metaphysis, resulting in a valgus deformity. The distraction device was removed three to six weeks after insertion. Spontaneous correction of angulation with growth occurred in the younger sheep; but when the induced valgus angle exceeded 20 degrees correction was poor. In two sheep further distraction was appli

A new short rib syndrome: report of two cases.

We describe two unrelated malformed infants who died shortly after birth and who had multiple congenital anomalies including hydrops and ascites, facial abnormalities (with median cleft of the upper lip), narrow thorax, protuberant abdomen, and short, bowed limbs. Postmortem radiographs showed very short ribs and disproportionately short long tubular bones; no metaphyseal abnormalities were present. Comparison with earlier described short-rib/short-rib-polydactyly syndromes suggest that the disorder present in our two cases is a new type of short-rib syndrome. One of our patients was born to a

A female with the orocraniodigital (Juberg-Hayward) syndrome is described in whom, in addition to bilateral cleft lip and palate, mild microcephaly, and anomalous thumbs and toes, there was absence of the pituitary fossa and a more widespread skeletal dysplasia.

Developmental low-dose bisphenol A exposure leads to extensive transcriptome female masculinization and male feminization later in life.

BACKGROUND: Bisphenol A (BPA) is an endocrine disruptor, and exposure to low doses in utero has been associated with the development of metabolic diseases. Previous studies have suggested that bone marrow (BM) may be particularly susceptible to BPA exposure. METHODS: Here, we investigate how developmental exposure to low levels of BPA affects the BM transcriptome and the blood metabolic profile in Fischer 344 rats later in life. We compare these effects to those observed in human metabolic syndrome (MetS) using a population-based cohort. RESULTS: The results show an unexpectedly extensive se
