The pathologic basis for presbyopia is classically attributed to lenticular sclerosis or atrophy of the ciliary muscle, but recent work suggests that thickening and loss of elasticity of the anterior lens capsule play an important role. The efficacy of intraruminal albendazole (ABZ) capsules (Profitril-Captec) and the effect of treatment on productivity were studied in 300 ewes infected with gastrointestinal nematodes and the trematode Dicrocoelium dendriticum. We studied the morphology and removal of lens epithelial cells in the following ways. In 49 senile cataractous eyes with a mean (+/- SD) age of 69 +/- 9 years, mean (+/- SD) cell density was 3574 +/- 512 cells/mm2 and mean (+/- SD) cell size was 281 +/- 48 micron 2. With age there was a significant decrease in cell density and an increase in cell size. Chemosensitivity of liver cell carcinoma was studied by subrenal capsule assay. The method of assay was based on Bogden's one, but the antitumor activity was evaluated by tumor growth inhibition rate (TG-IR). Clinical echographic examinations were performed in 15 cases of traumatic cataract. As a result certain criteria were established which give some information on the condition of the posterior capsule of the lens. Echographic examination prior to reoperation enables the procedure to be optimized with regard to IOL implantation, anterior vitrectomy, or prevention of retinal detachment.

Cysts of Tenon's capsule (encapsulated blebs) developed postoperatively in 77 (13%) of 607 eyes that underwent filtration surgery between 1980 and mid-1985. The annual incidence was not uniform, increasing markedly throughout the period. Seventy-four eyes were treated with medical therapy only. This is a report about bilateral dislocations of the knee joints in one patient with arterial and venous stop because of endothelial lesions and thrombosis of the popliteal vessels on both sides. After reconstruction of circulation by means of vena saphena, the disrupted knee ligaments were also sutured. Large ventral exposure of the knee joint is recommended for both reconstruction of vessels and ligaments.

A case is reported in which a Heidelberg pH capsule was administered to a patient with the stenosing form of Crohn disease. The capsule impacted in the stricture resulting in small bowel obstruction ultimately requiring surgical intervention. The authors wish to emphasize that a careful history of preexisting intestinal disease should be taken before the administration of any nonabsorbable diagnostic device.

The cycloscope, an aid for observing the ciliary body, was used to study lens haptic fixation in 100 living eyes (200 haptics).
