REASONS FOR PERFORMING STUDY: Improvement has been reported following intra-articular (i.a.) injection of mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) in several species. These observations have led to the use of i.a. MSCs in equine practice with little understanding of the mechanisms by which perceived improvement occurs.
OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the effect of i.a. allogeneic umbilical cord blood (CB-) derived MSCs using a lipopolysaccharide (LPS) induced synovitis model. We hypothesised that i.a. CB-MSCs would reduce the inflammatory response associated with LPS injection.

OBJECTIVE: To compare reference intervals (RI) of blood counts of Brazilian adults with and without sickle cell trait (SCT).
METHODS: Cross-sectional study, based on the National Health Survey, 2014-2015, composed of 8,952 individuals. The sample of patients with SCT was composed of 234 adults. The RIs of adults with and without SCT were compared in the study "Reference values for laboratory tests of blood count in the Brazilian adult population: National Health Survey", by Rosenfeld et al. Increasing the CD4-count threshold for cryptococcal antigen (CrAg) screening from ≤100 to ≤200 cells/µL resulted in a 3-fold increase in numbers screened. CrAg-prevalence was 3.5% at CD4 101-200 and 6.2% ≤100 cells/µL. Six-month mortality was 21.4% (9/42) in CrAg-positive CD4 ≤100 cells/µL and 3.2% (1/31) in CrAg-positive CD4 101-200 cells/µL.

Follicular lymphoma is usually an indolent non-Hodgkin lymphoma that rarely involves the central nervous system (CNS) and flow cytometric detection of such lymphoma in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) is often challenging because of low cellularity and viability of CSF samples. Here, we report our experience in a 52-year-old man whose relapsed follicular lymphoma with leptomeningeal involvement was confirmed by flow cytometric analysis of CSF, despite an exceedingly low white blood cell count (3/cumm).
