Attitudes Towards Bilingualism: Insights From Parents of Children With Down Syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Recent research indicates that bilingualism does not exacerbate the language learning difficulties commonly seen in children with down syndrome (DS). However, misconceptions persist about its potential negative impact. AIMS: This study aimed to investigate the attitudes, perceptions and experiences of bilingual parents or guardians raising children with DS, focusing on challenges, strategies, and professional advice received. To our knowledge, this is the first study to explore this topic specifically within this population. METHODS AND PROCEDURES: Fifty-seven parents participate

Effect of trust in village health workers on the use of facility-based follow-up postnatal care services in two districts in the Lao People's Democratic Republic.

BACKGROUND: Despite high coverage of antenatal care services (89.8%) and facility-based deliveries (79.8%), delayed initiation or lack of follow-up postnatal care (PNC) visits remains a challenge in the Lao People's Democratic Republic (Lao PDR). Follow-up PNC encourages healthy lifestyles and monitoring mothers' and newborns' health to decrease postpartum complications and hospital readmissions. While village health volunteers and workers (VHVs/VHWs) are essential for health promotion in Lao PDR, the extent to which mothers' trust in VHVs/VHWs helps promote better service utilization has not

The mental health needs of youth involved in the juvenile justice system in Jordan.

BACKGROUND: Existing evidence elucidates the psychological dimensions of juvenile delinquency, yet the need for cross-cultural validation remains critical to deepen and diversify our understanding of delinquency across different settings. Properly assessing and addressing the mental health needs of youth involved in the justice system (YIJS) is a strategic step that can help design and implement comprehensive responses to produce healthier youth who are less likely to act out and commit crimes. To this aim, this study explored several key mental health dimensions among YIJS who were incarcerat

The relationship between traumatic childbirth and first-time mothers' social identity and wellbeing: a cross-sectional observational study.

BACKGROUND: Experiencing childbirth as traumatic is common and can have long-lasting negative consequences for women's mental health. However, fostering a sense of social identity has been shown to protect psychological wellbeing and mental health during life transitions, such as entering parenthood. This study therefore investigated the relationship between traumatic childbirth and first-time mothers' social identity and their psychological wellbeing, and more specifically whether strength of identity as a first-time mother protected psychological wellbeing following traumatic childbirth. Effect of early childhood development interventions implemented by primary care providers commencing in the neonatal period to improve cognitive outcomes in children aged 0-23 months: protocol for a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Impacts of early childhood development (ECD) interventions (such as fostering attachment and responsiveness through communication, play and stimulation) are well known. Globally, there is increasing recognition of the importance of the 'golden' minutes, hours and days after birth for infant health and development. However, only one systematic review has examined ECD interventions implemented in the neonatal period (0-27 days), and this review only assessed interventions implemented by specialised providers. Primary care providers have many potential contacts with mothers and infant

Child abuse in infants with proximal physeal injuries of the femur.

OBJECTIVE: Child abuse has been recognized to be a common cause of femur fractures in infants. Fractures of the proximal femoral physis in abused infants have been less emphasized. Our report seeks to highlight this infrequent but clinically important inflicted injury. METHODS: Report of 2 cases and a literature review of fractures of the proximal femoral physis in infants, including the role of abuse in this injury. CONCLUSION: Proximal femoral physeal injuries occur infrequently in infants but often result from abuse. Diagnosis may be difficult due to lack of femoral head ossification befo

Reducing Screen Time in Children With Borderline IQ: A Randomized Controlled Trial of a Parent-Mediated Screen Time Usage Module.

Objective: The rapid expansion of mobile technology has significantly altered children's screen time behaviors, contributing to concerns about excessive usage. These changes are particularly relevant for children with borderline intellectual functioning, in whom unmanaged screen time may exacerbate developmental challenges. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a parent-mediated screen time usage module (PM-STUM) in reducing screen time and improving physical activity levels, sleep quality, and behavioral outcomes in children aged 4-12 years with borderline IQ. Methods: A randomize

Microbial leakage of MTA, Portland cement, Sealapex and zinc oxide-eugenol as root-end filling materials.

Dysthymic disorder is a chronic depressive condition occurring in 0.6-4.6% of children and 1.6-8.0% of adolescents. Although symptoms are less severe than those observed in major depression, childhood-onset dysthymic disorder is characterised by a persistent and long-term depressed or irritable mood (mean episode duration 3-4 years), a worse outcome than major depression and, frequently, comorbid disorders (in around 50% of patients). Long-lasting depressive symptoms seem responsible for long-term disabling consequences on social skill learning, psychosocial functioning and consequent professi

Split-liver transplantation: a comparison of ex vivo and in situ techniques.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: The expanding applicability of liver transplantation as treatment for end-stage liver disease has fostered a disproportionate increase in liver transplant candidates in the face of an unchanging pool of donor organs. This has resulted in disparities in pretransplant waiting times and deaths. The splitting of a liver allograft allows for the transplantation of 2 recipients, usually an adult and a child, thus providing a means to expand the cadaveric donor pool. METHODS: The authors present their results on the performance of an ex vivo (back table) split and in situ (in a h

Maternal substance use and HIV status: adolescent risk and resilience.

We examined the risk and protective factors and mental health problems of 105 low SES, urban adolescents whose mothers were coping with alcohol abuse and other drug problems. Approximately half of the mothers were also HIV-infected. As hypothesized, there were few differences between adolescents of HIV-infected and HIV-uninfected mothers in background characteristics, mental health issues and current substance use risk behaviors. In addition to maternal substance abuse, youth in both groups experienced similar risk factors including early foster care placement and high levels of maltreatment.

Understanding the outcome and management of children aged 2-59 months with chest indrawing pneumonia: a study protocol for an observational study in Ethiopia, India, Nigeria, Pakistan, Uganda and Zambia.

INTRODUCTION: Childhood pneumonia is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality among children aged 2-59 months, particularly in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs), where healthcare providers face significant challenges in diagnosing and treating childhood pneumonia. Many LMICs have taken steps to address this issue by revising their national policies and aligning them with WHO's revised guidelines for pneumonia management. These revised guidelines aim to facilitate the outpatient management of children aged 2-59 months chest indrawing pneumonia. Despite these efforts, there is lim
