Universal free school meals and child body mass index: impact among children in community-based health care organizations.

INTRODUCTION: The Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) is a federal policy that allows high-poverty schools to provide universally free breakfast and lunch to all children. Providing universal free meals has potential to decrease childhood obesity, but so far, studies are limited and findings mixed. METHODS: We used electronic health record data from a large network of community-based health care organizations and linked school-level data paired with extended 2-way fixed-effects models for staggered policy adoption to compare child body mass index z-scores (BMIz) from schools that adopted CE

Evaluating the Financial Factors Influencing Maternal, Newborn, and Child Health in Africa: Tobit Regression and Data Envelopment Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Despite international efforts, maternal, newborn, and child health (MNCH) outcomes in Africa continue to lag due to inefficient health systems and underperforming financial frameworks. Financial factors-such as total health expenditure, health coverage indices, and spending per capita-are key but understudied drivers of MNCH service efficiency. OBJECTIVE: This study investigates the extent to which financial inputs influence the technical efficiency of MNCH service delivery across 46 African countries. The aim is to generate evidence for health financing policies that can enhance …

Gut microbiome in early life and bone health outcomes at age 6: a Danish mother-child cohort study.

The gut microbiome is associated with bone mass acquisition, yet evidence in childhood remains limited. Given that lower peak bone mass predicts osteoporosis in later life, understanding early influences is important. This analysis explores the association between the early life gut microbiome and bone health in later childhood. Data were obtained from 700 children recruited in pregnancy and followed prospectively within the Copenhagen Prospective Studies on Asthma in Childhood2010 cohort, a population-based mother-child cohort. The infant gut microbiome was measured at 1 wk (n = 445), 1 mo (n

Effects of postpartum PTSD on maternal mental health and child socioemotional development - a two-year follow-up study.

BACKGROUND: Postpartum posttraumatic stress disorder (PP-PTSD) is a prevalent, yet often unrecognized mental health problem, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. Moreover, the long-term effects of PP-PTSD symptoms on maternal well-being and child socioemotional development beyond the first year postpartum remain largely unknown. This study focused on the association between PP-PTSD symptoms within one year after childbirth and maternal depressive symptoms and child behavioral problems two years later. METHODS: Russian women (n = 419) completed the City Birth Trauma Scale and the

A prospective cohort study to investigate parental stress and child health in low-income Chinese families: protocol paper.

INTRODUCTION: Chronic stress has adverse effects on health. Adults and children from low-income families are subject to multiple sources of stress. Existing literature about economic hardship mostly focuses on either adults or children but not both. Moreover, there is limited knowledge on the relationship between parental generalised stress and child health problems. This study aims to explore the bidirectional relationship between parental stress and child health in Chinese low-income families and to identify other modifiable factors influencing this relationship. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This …

Mental health indicators fifty years later: A population-based study of men with histories of child sexual abuse.

Childhood sexual abuse (CSA) is a widely acknowledged trauma that affects a substantial number of boys/men and has the potential to undermine mental health across the lifespan. Despite the topic's importance, few studies have examined the long-term effects of CSA on mental health in middle and late life for men. Most empirical studies on the effects of CSA have been conducted with women, non-probability samples, and samples of young or emerging adults with inadequate control variables. Based on complex trauma theory, the current study investigated: a) the effect of CSA on mental health outcome

Association between child marriage and reproductive health outcomes and service utilization: a multi-country study from South Asia.

PURPOSE: Despite the pervasiveness of child marriage and its potentially adverse consequences on reproductive health outcomes, there is relatively little empirical evidence available on this issue, which has hindered efforts to improve the targeting of adolescent health programs. The purpose of this study was to assess the association of child marriage with fertility, fertility control, and maternal health care use outcomes in four South Asian countries: India, Bangladesh, Nepal, and Pakistan. METHODS: Data for the study come from the most recent Demographic and Health Surveys conducted in th
