Family-Centered Care and Family Well-Being in a Community-Based Adapted Sport Program for Children with Neurodevelopmental Disabilities: A Cross-Sectional Exploratory Study.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Family-Centered Care (FCC) is an established standard in pediatric rehabilitation, but it has been studied almost entirely inside health services; whether its principles survive the move into community settings is largely unknown. This paper describes how caregivers perceive the family-centeredness of a community-based adapted sport program and characterizes child quality of life and caregiver well-being. METHODS: Cross-sectional study within the "Skill-In" program (University of Messina). Nineteen caregivers of children with neurodevelopmental disabilities completed th

Physical activity and sports behavior of children and adolescents with and without disabilities from Germany: results from the cross-sectional KiGGS wave 2 study.

BACKGROUND: Physical activity (PA) offers significant health benefits for children and adolescents with (CAWD) and without (CAWoD) disabilities. As there's no data about the PA in different settings of CAWD in Germany, the present study aims to identify and compare PA participation in CAWD and CAWoD, focusing on meeting the World Health Organizational (WHO) PA recommendations and participation in sports activities (non-organised and organised sport in higher intensities) and sports clubs. METHOD: This study used data from the cross-sectional nationwide German Health Interview and Examination

Scoping review of evidence-based practice guidelines for the evaluation and care of young children with developmental disabilities in LMIC settings: evidence for action.

INTRODUCTION: Childhood disability is increasingly prevalent, particularly in low-income and middle-income countries, as more children survive worldwide. Global practice guidelines are essential to address the need for timely identification, evaluation and management of children with developmental disabilities, particularly in resource-limited settings. This scoping review aims to summarise recent evidence-based practice guidelines for the assessment and care of children aged 0-5 years at risk or with developmental disabilities and identify those practice guidelines that are suitable for use a

Learning for life, friendships and relationships from the perspective of children and young people with intellectual disabilities: findings from a UK wide qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Relationships and sexuality education (RSE) programmes are widely taught in schools, however for children and young people with intellectual disabilities, these programmes appear to be limited regarding information on relationships, informed choices and decision making. The purpose of this study was to seek the views and understanding of children and young people with intellectual disabilities, and those involved in their care and education, to identify best practice and approaches to the delivery on relationships and sexuality education. METHODS: This study used a qualitative des

Cross-sectional Comparison of Disparities by Race Using White vs Hispanic as Reference Among Children and Youths With Developmental Disabilities Referred for Speech Therapy.

IMPORTANCE: Health care research on racial disparities among children and youths has historically used the White race as a reference category with which other racial and ethnic groups are compared, which may inadvertently set up Whiteness as a standard for health. OBJECTIVE: To compare 2 interpretations of an analysis of racial disparities in speech therapy receipt among children and youths with developmental disabilities: a traditional, White-referenced analysis and a Hispanic majority-referenced analysis. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cross-sectional study used multiple logistic

Current evidence does not support whole body vibration in clinical practice in children and adolescents with disabilities: a systematic review of randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Whole body vibration has been used alone or combined with other interventions in rehabilitation of children and adolescents with disabilities; however, there is limited evidence to support this approach. OBJECTIVES: To review the strength, quality, and conclusiveness of evidence supporting the use of whole body vibration in children and adolescents with disabilities. METHODS: Electronic database search included Medline, AMED, Embase, Cochrane, SportDiscus, CINAHL and PEDro from the inception to June 2018. School readiness in children with special educational needs and disabilities: Psychometric findings from a new screening tool, the Brief Early Skills, and Support Index.

BACKGROUND: There is an urgent need to accelerate the detection of special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). A recent brief questionnaire designed for teachers and nursery staff, the Brief Early Skills and Support Index (BESSI), shows promising psychometric properties (Hughes, Daly, Foley, White, & Devine, . British Journal of Educational Psychology, 85(3), 332-356.), but has yet to be evaluated as a tool for detecting children who may have SEND. AIMS: Addressing this gap, this study aimed to assess whether BESSI scores (i) show measurement invariance across SEND status; (ii) show un

Learning disabilities and school problems in a regional cohort of extremely low birth weight (less than 1000 G) children: a comparison with term controls.

We compared the prevalence of learning disabilities at age 8 years in a subgroup of 68 of 129 (53%) regional cohort of extremely low birth weight (ELBW) children who were considered "normal" neurologically and intellectually (IQ greater than or equal to 85) with that of 114 term group matched controls (C). Both groups were tested with a battery of psychoeducational measures, and parents and teachers completed questionnaires on the school performance of the children. ELBW children were comparable with C on measures of intelligence (ELBW 101 +/- 8, C 104 +/- 11), language, and academic achieveme

'It was just a normal day!' Caregiver perspectives of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on children living with disabilities in South Africa.

BACKGROUND: Children with disabilities were unlikely to be included in response strategies during the COVID-19 pandemic in the poorest countries that prioritise medical models. We aimed to understand the impact of COVID-19 on these children and their families in South Africa, through the lens of the WHO International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) framework, to advance service delivery that could make a difference to their lives. METHODS: Caregivers of children with developmental disabilities from an online parent network (n=400), initiated by Shonaquip Social Ente…

Exploring the Influence of the Coronavirus Disease 2019 Pandemic on the Accessibility of Rehabilitation Services Provided to Children with Disabilities: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Background and Objectives: Children with disabilities (such as cerebral palsy, autistic spectrum disorder, and Down syndrome) are the most vulnerable and marginalized subset of the population, representing 2.7% of the total population of Saudi Arabia. The COVID-19 outbreak might have disproportionately affected children with disabilities, augmented their isolation, and induced severe disruptions to the services on which these children rely. Limited research has been conducted in Saudi Arabia to understand the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the rehabilitation services provided to children w…

Are Individual Differences in Response to Intervention Influenced by the Methods and Measures Used to Define Response? Implications for Identifying Children With Learning Disabilities.

Response to intervention (RTI) has been promoted for nearly 20 years as a valid supplement to or alternative method of learning disability (LD) identification. Nevertheless, important unresolved questions remain about its role in disability identification. We had two purposes when conducting this study of 229 economically and racially diverse poor readers in Grades 4 and 5 in 28 public elementary and middle schools in Nashville. First, we examined predictors of the children's response to a reading comprehension tutoring program. Second, we explored the utility of different methods (growth vs f
