Choroidal osteoma is a benign tumor of the choroid. Herein, we report a rare case of decalcified choroidal osteoma found in the retina. A 27-year-old woman presented with visual loss. Her best-corrected visual acuity was 20/50 OS. Ophthalmoscopy of the left eye revealed a yellow-white calcified region accompanied by a decalcified region of four disc diameters in size. After 6 years, spectral-domain optical coherence tomography showed a tumor projected strongly upwards from the choroid and partially through the retina with serous retinal detachment, with both a lamellar appearance and mound-lik…

Adenocarcinoma of the esophagus is an exceedingly rare cause of choroidal metastasis. We report the case of a 48-year-old Caucasian male with a 2-month history of decreased vision and dysphagia. Ophthalmologic examination revealed bilateral choroidal masses and an exudative retinal detachment in the left eye. Gastroduodenoscopy revealed a circumferential mass in the distal esophagus at 30 cm extending into and involving the gastroesophageal junction. Endoscopic biopsy disclosed an invasive, poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma. Systemic workup revealed widespread metastatic changes in the peri…

There have been numerous types of animal models of choroidal neovascularization (CNV) and retinal neovascularization (RNV). Understanding the pathobiology of CNV and RNV is important when evaluating and utilizing these models. Both CNV and RNV are dynamic processes. A break or defect in Bruchs' membrane is necessary for CNV to develop. This may be induced with a laser, mechanically via surgery, or in the setting of transgenic mice. Some of the transgenic mouse models spontaneously develop RNV and/or retinal angiomatous proliferation (RAP)-like lesions. The pathogenesis of RNV is well-known and…

High myopia affects approximately 2% of general population, and is a major cause of legal blindness in many developed countries. Choroidal neovascularization (CNV) is the most common vision-threatening complication of high myopia. Different therapeutic approaches have been attempted such as thermal laser photocoagulation, surgery and photodynamic therapy with verteporfin (PDT). The visual outcome of these therapies has been reported to be better than the natural history of the condition. However, the limited visual acuity improvement after PDT monotherapy and the appearance of subretinal fibro…

Bietti crystalline dystrophy is a rare autosomal recessive condition characterised by the presence of crystals in the retina and is followed by retinal and choroidal degeneration. We present a novel finding of juxtafoveal choroidal neovascularisation in Bietti crystalline dystrophy and demonstrate a spectral domain optical coherence tomography image of this disorder.

AIMS: Octreotide exhibits anti-angiogenic activity in animal models of retinopathy of prematurity and in clinical cases of proliferative diabetic retinopathy. In this study, we tested the applicability of using octreotide for inhibiting experimental choroidal neovascularization (CNV) in rats.
METHODS: Of 15 adult rats used, 3 served as non-laser-treated controls. CNV was induced in the right eye of the remaining 12 rats by laser photocoagulation. These 12 rats were divided into two groups (n = 6 each) which were retrobulbarly injected with octreotide (50 miucrog/kg) or phosphate-buffered sali…

Age-related macular degeneration is the leading cause of blindness in the elderly. Choroidal neovascularization (CNV) leads to severe vision loss in patients of age-related macular degeneration. Previously, we have demonstrated that deguelin, isolated from plants in the Mundulea sericea family, is a chemopreventive agent. This study evaluates the antiangiogenic effect of deguelin on CNV. The toxicity of deguelin was evaluated through 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide assay in human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) as well as histological examination and term…

PURPOSE: Neurotuberculosis is a relatively common form of tuberculosis and may be seen in 1-10% of patients of systemic tuberculosis and may present in several forms. Ocular lesions are frequently seen, most commonly optic nerve lesions. Limited data are available for choroidal tubercles. We conducted a prospective study 1) to determine the prevalence of choroidal tubercles in a cohort of patients of neurotuberculosis as well as its relative prevalence in the various morphological manifestations and 2) to study the role of co-existent systemic tuberculous infection.
METHODS: IRB-approved pros…

The process of submacular angiogenesis seen in association with a variety of chorioretinal disorders is termed choroidal neovascularization (CNV). It invariably results in significant and permanent vision loss arising from the development of scar tissue formation. At the cellular level, CNV appears to be a component of several key processes that can be broadly referred to as wound healing or tissue repair. Wound healing involves a coordinated cascade of cellular events driven, in the main, by the production of cytokines and which are interpreted by target cells in the context of a continually …
