Coexistent intramedullary spinal cord and choroidal metastases in ovarian cancer.

Involvement of intramedullary spinal cord and the choroid by ovarian cancer is rare, and coexistence of metastases at these sites is extremely rare and has never been reported. This condition rapidly progresses to a neurological emergency; however, an efficient standard treatment method is not available for this rare condition. The case presented herein is of a female patient with stage II, poorly differentiated serous cystadenocarcinoma of the ovary. She presented with blindness and other neurologic complaints during the course of treatment for a recurrence at 50 months after the primary surg

Stereo-Vision-Inspired Spectral Disparity Learning for Choroidal Tumor Thickness Prediction.

PURPOSE: To investigate whether choroidal tumor thickness can be estimated from fundus photographs using a stereo-vision-inspired deep learning approach. METHODS: A deep learning framework was developed to independently extract features from red and green color channels of ultra-widefield fundus photographs and integrate them using a spectral disparity module (SDM). The SDM explicitly captures inter-channel correspondence and disparity, mimicking the principles of human binocular depth perception. The model was trained and evaluated on 337 patients with choroidal tumors, using ultrasound-meas

OCT-A evaluation of the retinal and choroidal structures of patients with a history of radiotherapy due to nasopharyngeal carcinoma.

BACKGROUND: To perform the optical coherence tomography angiography (OCT-A) evaluation of the microvascular structures of the retina and choroidal tissue in asymptomatic patients who received radiotherapy for nasopharyngeal carcinoma and to compare the results to those of healthy individuals. METHODS: Ophthalmological examinations were performed in all asymptomatic patients without vascular or systemic diseases, or fundus findings who had received radiotherapy at least two years earlier. Then, OCT-A scans were obtained. Foveal, parafoveal, and whole retinal thicknesses, vessel densities in th

OPTICAL COHERENCE TOMOGRAPHY FINDINGS IN CHOROIDAL MELANOMA-ASSOCIATED SUBRETINAL FLUID.

PURPOSE: To report optical coherence tomography findings of choroidal melanoma with subretinal fluid (SRF). METHODS: Single-center, retrospective review of spectral-domain optical coherence tomography in treatment-naive choroidal melanoma with associated SRF presenting between July 2009 and August 2021. RESULTS: Of 236 included patients, choroidal melanoma was small (n = 98, 41.5%), medium (n = 99, 41.9%), or large (n = 39, 16.5%). The most common optical coherence tomography feature was ellipsoid zone loss/disruption (n = 174, 73.7%), with unique features of bacillary layer detachment (n =

Photodynamic therapy for macular choroidal osteoma.

PURPOSE: To report a case of macular choroidal osteoma treated with photodynamic therapy. OBSERVATIONS: A 34-years old woman with decreased visual acuity in her left eye came to our observation for assessment of an amelanotic choroidal tumor in the left eye. On the basis of ophthalmoscopic and echographic features the tumor was diagnosed as choroidal osteoma. Imaging examination revealed subretinal fluid involving the foveal area associated with alterations of outer neuroepithelial layers and photoreceptors without evidence of choroidal neovascularization. Foveal sparing standard fluence rate

Isolated Diffuse Choroidal Hemangioma: A Variant of Sturge-Weber Syndrome?

The authors report a case of a diffuse choroidal hemangioma in the left eye of a 17-year-old girl. No evidence of leptomeningeal angiomatosis was found on magnetic resonance imaging and neither the medical history nor the clinical examination revealed a port wine birthmark on the left side of the face. Fine telangiectatic vessels were found on the bulbar conjunctiva of the ipsilateral eye. Because of the shared destination of the vessel-trigeminal-ectoderm complex that migrates toward the optic placode, forming choriocapillaris, upper facial skin (upper eyelid), and conjunctival vessels, an em

Unusual Intraventricular Tumor Mimicker; Choroid Plexus Arteriovenous Malformation.

Arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) are basically abnormal vessel networks consisting of one or more feeding arteries, central nidus, and dilated drainage veins. They are divided into subtypes as fistulose, mixed (fistulose-plexiform), or plexiform. Intraventricular location of AVMs is unusual. In this location, the lesion may mimic neoplastic processes. Here the authors reported uncommon case of an AVM located in the right choroid plexus presenting with intraventricular hemorrhage.

A Pericallosal Lipoma Case with Abnormal Vasculature Mimicking Arteriovenous Malformation.

Pericallosal lipomas (PCLs) are rare tumors of the central nervous system. They may be associated with some parenchymal and vascular anomalies of brain. Magnetic resonance imaging is the modality of choice to assess the extent of the PCLs and possible concomitant malformations such as callosal agenesis/disgenesis. Computerized tomography angiography may be indicated to evaluate the vasculature of the lesion. We report here a case of PCL with rare features including asymptomatic callosal agenesis, bilateral choroid plexus lipomas and abnormal vasculature.

Atypical choroid plexus papilloma: spontaneous resolution of diffuse leptomeningeal contrast enhancement after primary tumor removal in 2 pediatric cases.

Atypical choroid plexus papillomas can metastasize in the form of leptomeningeal seeding. Postoperative chemotherapy is the recommended first-line treatment when gross-total removal is not achieved or in cases of disseminated disease. Here the authors report on 2 children with atypical choroid plexus papillomas and MRI findings of diffuse leptomeningeal enhancement at diagnosis, later presenting with spontaneous resolution of the leptomeningeal involvement after removal of the primary lesions. Observations in this report expand our knowledge about the natural history and biological behavior of

Anterior choroid plexus cysts: distinction from germinolysis by high-resolution sonography.

BACKGROUND: The aim of the present paper was to develop criteria identifying anterior choroid plexus cysts (ACPC) and distinguish these from germinolytic pseudocysts. METHODS: Cerebral sonography was performed in 2200 neonates with mean gestational age 40 completed weeks (range 23-42 weeks) and mean birthweight of 3450 g (range 340-4610 g). In the last 300 neonates cystic formations in the caudothalamic groove were studied prospectively using a high-resolution ultrasound system with linear scanhead, and the previous results were re-evaluated. RESULTS: In 22 neonates choroid plexus cysts outs

Syphilitic scleritis and choroidal malignant melanoma of the same eye.

A 42-year-old Italian homosexual presented with a red painful eye associated with exudative retinal detachment that was subsequently attributed to syphilitic posterior scleritis. These findings all resolved with intravenous penicillin therapy. However, choroidal mass lesion persisted and subsequent ancillary imaging including B scan and ultrasonography confirmed the presence of a choroidal melanoma, which was treated with radioactive plaque therapy. This case report will describe the interesting findings of this unique presentation.

Consecutive cyclic exotropia after surgery for adult-onset cyclic esotropia.

Cyclic esotropia--periods of esotropia alternating with periods of orthotropia, most commonly on a 48-hour cycle--is a rare condition seen mostly in children. Surgical correction of the maximum deviation generally corrects the esotropia without resulting in alternating periods of exotropia, as might be expected if the periodicity continued postoperatively. Unlike cyclic esotropia in children, the few reported adult cases have often been associated with severe acquired monocular visual impairment; however, the response to surgical treatment is reported to be the same as that in children. We rep

Large-cell medulloblastoma in Aicardi syndrome. Case report and literature review.

An eight-year-old girl with Aicardi syndrome (AIC) developed signs of increased intracranial pressure. A clinical and radiological investigation revealed a tumor in the posterior fossa, which was resected. The histopathological diagnosis was large-cell medulloblastoma. Eight months later, she died of a local recurrence, despite treatment with chemotherapy and radiotherapy according to a PNET protocol. In addition to the growth of a large-cell medulloblastoma at the location of the primary tumor and the meningeal spread of the tumor, the autopsy revealed major cortical and subcortical malformat

[Choroidal melanoma in neurofibromatosis type 2: description of a case].

To the best of our knowledge this is the first description of a choroidal melanoma with documented growth in neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF2). A 20-year-old patient with NF2 presenting deafness due to bilateral acoustic neurinomas and unilateral amaurosis due to a meningioma of the optic nerve developed a pigmented parapapillary choroidal tumor. Despite signs indicating the diagnosis of a melanoma, periodic observation was chosen in order to postpone functional amputation following optic nerve irradiation. The tumor growth was slow during the 5 years that followed, and once progression became ra
