PROBLEM: This study evaluated injured construction workers' perceptions of workplace safety climate, psychological job demands, decision latitude, and coworker support, and the relationship of these variables to the injury severity sustained by the workers.
METHODS: Injury severity was assessed using the Health Assessment Questionnaire (HAQ), which evaluates functional limitations. Worker perceptions of workplace variables were determined by two instruments: (a) the Safety Climate Measure for Construction Sites and (b) the Job Content Questionnaire (JCQ).
RESULTS: The overall model explained

UNLABELLED: Phyllosphere fungal communities play critical ecological roles in plant fitness and nutrient cycling in terrestrial ecosystems. However, the influences of multifactorial climate change on foliar mycobiomes across distinct plant functional groups remain poorly understood. To elucidate this, we used an 11-year field manipulation experiment to assess the impacts of simulated warming (+2.0°C) and altered precipitation (-50%, ambient, and +50%) on foliar fungal α-diversity, β-diversity, and functional guilds across four co-occurring alpine host plants: a forb (Aster diplostephioides), a

Global climate change-induced sea level rise has emerged as a critical environmental challenge for coastal cities in the 21st century. Shanghai, China's economic, financial, and shipping hub, faces significantly amplified inundation risks in its coastal areas due to the compounding effects of sea level rise, land subsidence, and storm surges. This study constructs a multi-case simulation framework using the sixth assessment report of intergovernmental panel on climate change sea level projection data, land subsidence monitoring records, and historical storm surge data to evaluate the impacts o

Tropical forest responses to increasing atmospheric CO2 (iCO2) depend on nutrient constraints, with phosphorus emerging as a central limiting factor. However, current global land models rarely include explicit representations of microbial-driven phosphorus cycling, which is critical in highly weathered tropical soils. Here, we use the QUINCY land surface model coupled with the microbial-explicit Jena Soil Model (JSM) to simulate coupled carbon-nutrient dynamics in Amazon forests along a natural gradient in soil phosphorus availability (40-312 g P m-2). The model reproduced observed patterns of

Elevated carbon dioxide (eCO2) acts as a fertiliser for photosynthesis, driving an increase in gross primary production (GPP). However, it is unclear how effectively increased GPP propagates along the 'carbon (C) cascade' to increase net primary production (NPP) and vegetation C stocks (Cveg) in different plant compartments. Vegetation models were criticised for being overly sensitive to photosynthesis (source-driven), neglecting sink-driven processes which may attenuate (or amplify) changes in NPP and vegetation C stocks. Here, we introduce an analytical framework to diagnose linearity (L) as

Conserving wildlife communities across shifting landscapes requires an understanding of how dynamic environmental factors that shape habitat vary across space and time. Declines in wildlife species diversity due to urbanization and changing climate conditions are widely documented. However, the combined future impacts of these multiple environmental stressors on wildlife communities remain unclear, partially due to the lack of data at the spatiotemporal scales necessary for predicting how wildlife with diverse habitat needs respond to long-term anthropogenic change. Furthermore, wildlife commu

The Earth is greening in many regions under elevated atmospheric CO2 concentrations, along with increasing temperature and land use changes. However, despite the continued rise in CO2, greening has stagnated or even reversed in some regions, suggesting a reduced capacity of the land surface to act as a carbon sink. Here, we show that declining water availability and rising atmospheric water demand have coincided with regional browning trends over recent decades in some tropical regions that have historically acted as prominent carbon sinks. A regression analysis considering a balanced set of w

Hypertension is a leading cause of stroke, heart disease, and kidney failure. The genetic basis of blood pressure variation is largely unknown but is likely to involve genes that influence renal salt handling and arterial vessel tone. Here we argue that susceptibility to hypertension is ancestral and that differential susceptibility to hypertension is due to differential exposure to selection pressures during the out-of-Africa expansion. The most important selection pressure was climate, which produced a latitudinal cline in heat adaptation and, therefore, hypertension susceptibility. Consiste

Natural emissions of air pollutants from the surface play major roles in air quality and climate change. In particular, nitrogen oxides (NOx) emitted from soils contribute ~15% of global NOx emissions, sea salt aerosols are a major player in the climate and chemistry of the marine atmosphere, and biogenic emissions are the dominant source of non-methane volatile organic compounds at the global scale. These natural emissions are often estimated using nonlinear parameterizations, which are sensitive to the horizontal resolutions of inputted meteorological and ancillary data. Here we use the HEMC

Scrub typhus is emerging and re-emerging in many areas: climate change may affect its spread. To explore the effects of meteorological factors on scrub typhus, monthly cases of scrub typhus from January 2006 to December 2012 in the Laiwu district of temperate northern China were analysed. We examined the correlations between scrub typhus and meteorological factors (and their delayed effects). We built a time-series adjusted negative binomial model to reflect the relationships between climate variables and scrub typhus cases. The key determinants of scrub typhus transmission were temperature, r

Global warming [+0.5-0.6 degree C during the second half of the 20th century] seems a reality although climatologists did not reach a common agreement on its actual origin, and this phenomenon may still increase along the 21st century [+1.5 to 6 degrees C]. Epidemiologists are anxious at the eventual effects of the resulting climate change on the evolution of arbovirus infections transmitted to human beings by hematophagous vectors such as mosquitoes and ticks. Analysis of the literature devoted to this problem did not lead to precise conclusions and the mathematical models used seems insuffic

Air pollution is an important environmental factor associated with health impacts in Europe and considerable resources are used to reduce exposure to air pollution through emission reductions. These reductions will have non-linear effects on exposure due, e.g., to interactions between climate and atmospheric chemistry. By using an integrated assessment model, we quantify the effect of changes in climate, emissions and population demography on exposure and health impacts in Europe. The sensitivity to the changes is assessed by investigating the differences between the decades 2000-2009, 2050-20

Mangrove ecosystems play a critical role in climate change mitigation through blue carbon storage while supporting coastal resilience and community livelihoods. This study developed an adaptive mangrove governance model integrating the Sasi customary system, Carbon Economic Value (CEV), and Ecological Fiscal Transfer (EFT) within a Social-Ecological Systems (SES) framework in East Seram Regency, Indonesia. A mixed-methods approach integrated biophysical, socio-institutional, carbon valuation, and DPSIR analyses. Annualized carbon-stock change was estimated from multi-temporal ecosystem carbon

Local weather conditions are expected to have species specific effects on the activity of insect pollinators. However, the relationship between changing weather patterns and pollinator activity has not been well studied. We develop a thermodynamic model for insect thorax temperature that provides a mechanistic link between local weather conditions and functional traits (e.g. body mass, flight speed) and flight activity. We show that behavioural warming and cooling adaptations are essential for temperate bumblebees and the western honeybee, and that the maximum air temperature for sustained fli

Climate change is causing sea-ice to retreat from Arctic ecosystems. Loss of ice impacts the ecosystem in many ways, reducing habitat area for specialist species like polar bears, releasing freshwater and nutrients, and increasing light penetration into the water column. To explore the interaction of these effects, we implemented a Northeast Greenland continental shelf parameterisation of the end-to-end ecosystem model StrathE2E. We used model output from the NEMO-MEDUSA ocean-biogeochemistry model under Representative Concentration Pathway 8.5 as driving data, which suggests the northeast Gre

Over the last 3 decades, a large portion of coral cover has been lost around the globe. This significant decline necessitates a rapid assessment of coral reef health to enable more effective management. In this paper, we propose an efficient method for coral cover estimation and demonstrate its viability. A large-scale 3-D structure model, with resolutions in the x, y and z planes of 0.01 m, was successfully generated by means of a towed optical camera array system (Speedy Sea Scanner). The survey efficiency attained was 12,146 m2/h. In addition, we propose a segmentation method utilizing U-Ne

The combustion of fossil fuels produces emissions of the long-lived greenhouse gas carbon dioxide and of short-lived pollutants, including sulfur dioxide, that contribute to the formation of atmospheric aerosols1. Atmospheric aerosols can cool the climate, masking some of the warming effect that results from the emission of greenhouse gases1. However, aerosol particulates are highly toxic when inhaled, leading to millions of premature deaths per year2,3. The phasing out of unabated fossil-fuel combustion will therefore provide health benefits, but will also reduce the extent to which the warmi

Vibrio vulnificus is a Gram-negative bacterium and an emerging pathogen globally distributed in brackish and marine waters. It can be transmitted to humans through contaminated food, which causes primary septicemia, or through wound exposure, causing necrotizing fasciitis. Increased abundance and range expansion have recently been associated with climate change. Further understanding of the spatial epidemiology of V. vulnificus is necessary, and species distribution modeling is a technique to correlate all the factors related to the spread of V. vulnificus. Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever (RMSF) is a potentially fatal tick-borne disease historically prevalent in the eastern and southeastern U.S. Since the early 2000s, there has been a notable rise in RMSF cases in the south-western U.S. Despite the documented role of dogs in tick-borne disease transmission, research on the influence of other factors, such as veterinary care access, climatic conditions and landscape characteristics on RMSF incidence is limited. This study investigated the combined impact of these factors on RMSF using county-level temperature, relative humidity, precipitation, land c
