Phytoextraction is an effective method to remediate heavy metal contaminated landscapes but is often applied for single metal contaminants. Plants used for phytoextraction may not always be able to grow in drier environments without irrigation. This study investigated if willows (Salix x reichardtii A. Kerner) can be used for phytoextraction of multiple metals in biosolids, an end-product of the wastewater treatment process, and if irrigation with reclaimed and freshwater influences the extraction process. A plantation of willows was established directly onto a tilled stockpile of metal-contam

A field study among workers in the fish processing industry (n = 143) was performed to obtain information about skin surface temperature, transepidermal water loss (TEWL), and electrical capacitance and their relationships during work. The skin temperature, TEWL and electrical capacitance were measured on the fingers, hands and forearms. A linear positive relation was found between the temperature and TEWL (in all measured areas), a linear negative relation between the temperature and capacitance (fingers and palms), and a linear negative relation between the capacitance and TEWL (fingers). Wastewater management (WWM) is vital for protecting human health and the environment, yet conventional centralized systems are resource-intensive and unsuited to growing urban pressure. Small and medium WWMs offer a potentially more sustainable alternative, but the lack of standardized life cycle assessment (LCA) approaches limits robust comparison and informed decision-making. In this study, we conduct a global harmonization of life cycle assessments of small- and medium-scale systems across 96 LCAs and 9 treatment technologies. By harmonizing life cycle inventories, we eliminate variability

Mutualistic interactions between plants and bees are essential for tropical forests. This study analyzes the spatiotemporal variation in the pollen niche of Melipona scutellaris, a generalist stingless bee native to the Atlantic Forest. Pollen was collected over 17 months at four replicates in the Michelin Ecological Reserve, Northeastern Brazil. Samples were processed using standard acetolysis, and ecological indices were analyzed. Sixty-one pollen types were found in this bee diet, with foraging concentrated on a few of them. Despite its generalist behavior, the concentration of pollen colle

Methanotrophic bacteria are the primary organisms that consume atmospheric methane (CH4) and have potential to mitigate climate-active gases. However, a limited understanding of the genetic determinants of methanotrophy hinders the development of biotechnologies leveraging these unique microbes. Here, we developed and optimized a CRISPR interference (CRISPRi) system to enable functional genomic screening in methanotrophic bacteria. We built a genome-wide single guide RNA (sgRNA) library in the industrial methanotroph, Methylococcus capsulatus, consisting of ~45,000 unique sgRNAs mediating indu

Soil salinization is one of the most pressing abiotic stresses currently confronting global agriculture, posing a severe threat to crop yields and global food security. As soil salinity is not uniform, plant roots actively adjust their direction of growth to evade high-salinity regions; a phenomenon called halotropism. The core molecular mechanism underlying this process relies on the asymmetric redistribution of auxin. This paper systematically reviews the current knowledge of the physiological and molecular mechanisms regulating root halotropism, compares the divergent halotropic strategies

Plant oxylipins are a diverse group of oxygenated fatty acid derivatives that function as important signaling molecules in plant responses to abiotic stress. Although jasmonates, particularly jasmonic acid (JA) and its derivatives, have been extensively studied, increasing evidence demonstrates that other oxylipin classes, including 12-oxophytodienoic acid (OPDA), green leaf volatiles (GLVs), reactive electrophilic oxylipins (RES), and peroxygenase (PXG)-derived oxylipins, also contribute to stress adaptation. This review summarizes current understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying

Following a series of major ethical scandals in various organizations, researchers have increasingly sought to understand the role of ethical voice in the workplace. Existing ethical voice research centres on leadership-focused models and overlooks the individual psychological mechanisms connecting traits to ethical voice, creating a key gap in understanding the micro-foundations of such behaviour. The results of a longitudinal field study featuring 453 participants from one Chinese firm were used to investigate the model hypothesized in this research. The results reveal that employee mindfuln

The Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), the world's largest ongoing infrastructure endeavor, tackles urgent development needs in underserved regions. However, its construction phase, especially material extraction and processing, may have far-reaching climate implications that remain poorly known. Here, we present the first global, project-level assessment of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions embodied in the construction of over 700 individual BRI projects (2008-2024) across 105 countries. By integrating a detailed project data set with a physically grounded global supply chain model that captures ma

Climate change is recognized as a key amplifier of human-wildlife conflict, yet the underlying mechanism remains poorly understood. Japan's 2025 bear crisis, which produced 232 casualties, has been widely attributed to rapid population growth, but demographic processes are far too gradual to explain the surge. Using an 18-year dataset across five Tohoku prefectures, we find that it reflects bears responding to a rhythm breakdown of the forest's food supply. Conflict rises sharply once mast production falls below a threshold. Around 2006, the mast system passed a break point, after which lean y

Global demand for high-quality poultry meat has driven intensive genetic selection for fast growth and high breast yield, inadvertently increasing muscle myopathies (wooden breast and white striping), pale-soft-exudative (PSE)-like meat, and animal welfare issues. This review synthesizes recent literature on integrated management and genetic strategies to maximize poultry meat quality without sacrificing productivity or sustainability. Key management interventions include optimizing stocking densities, precise climate control, antibiotic alternatives (probiotics, organic acids), and advanced p

As the world's largest evergreen broadleaved forest (EBLF), East Asian EBLF houses high levels of biodiversity and endemism and is essential to regional carbon storage and cycling. However, how East Asian EBLF was shaped over time remains an open question. Here, we investigate the historical assembly of this biome by sampling 21 angiosperm clades (together encompassing 2028 species) that include evergreen and deciduous species. We show that the transition from deciduous to evergreen lineages, and in situ diversification and immigration of evergreen lineages in subtropical East Asia all experie

Climate change has led to increased jellyfish blooms in the Mediterranean Sea, significantly impacting coastal economies such as tourism and fishing. Polysaccharides from the jellyfish species Rhizostoma pulmo (JSP) have emerged as promising biomaterial for pharmaceutical applications. Previous research demonstrated the potential of these glycosaminoglycan-like structure polysaccharides, extracted via hot-water extraction, for wound healing. This study aims to describe a more eco-friendly and rapid microwave-assisted extraction (MAE) process for JSPs, while preserving their glycosaminoglycan f

The escalation of global climate change and environmental degradation has made it imperative to develop innovative strategies to mitigate carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions and enhance its utilization. Formate dehydrogenase (FDH) is a key enzyme capable of catalyzing the reversible conversion between CO₂ and formate. Due to its critical role in sustainable carbon recycling processes, FDH has garnered significant attention in recent times. This review offers a thorough analysis of FDH, emphasizing its dual function of converting one carbon (C1) substrates and providing reducing power. Recent advanc

Understanding how microplastic pollution alters soil microbial communities and their influence on soil carbon processes is crucial to elucidating the associated pollutant-climate change feedback. However, previous studies have mainly focused on the effects of microplastics on soil carbon loss, and whether and how microplastics mediate microbial anabolism and subsequent contributions to soil carbon are largely unexplored. Here, we evaluated how conventional and biodegradable microplastic exposure simultaneously affects carbon mineralization and the accumulation of microbial necromass carbon in

This comprehensive study examines fossil remains from Niedźwiedzia Cave in the Eastern Sudetes, offering detailed insights into the palaeobiology and adversities encountered by the Pleistocene cave bear Ursus spelaeus ingressus. Emphasising habitual cave use for hibernation and a primarily herbivorous diet, the findings attribute mortality to resource scarcity during hibernation and habitat fragmentation amid climate shifts. Taphonomic analysis indicates that the cave was extensively used by successive generations of bears, virtually unexposed to the impact of predators. The study also reveals

Women across the globe have been subject to female genital cutting (FGC), with the highest rates in Somalia. FGC can result in sexual concerns, especially sexual pain and lower pleasure. Due to ongoing civil war and climate disasters, there is a large number of Somali immigrants and refugees living in countries where healthcare providers may be unfamiliar with the impact of FGC. In this qualitative study, sixty Somali women between the ages 20 and 45 and living in the U.S. shared their perspectives on how FGC has affected their sexual lives, including how they have coped with any complications

Interactions between metals and microbes are critical in geomicrobiology and vital in microbial ecophysiological processes. Methane-oxidizing bacteria (MOB) and ammonia-oxidizing microorganisms (AOM) are key members in aerobic environments to start the C and N cycles. Ammonia and methane are firstly oxidized by copper-binding metalloproteins, monooxygenases, and diverse iron and copper-containing enzymes that contribute to electron transportation in the energy gain pathway, which is evolutionally connected between MOB and AOM. In this review, we summarized recently updated insight into the div

Tropospheric ozone (O3) is a harmful gas compound to humans and vegetation, and it also serves as a climate change forcer. O3 is formed in the reactions of nitrogen oxides and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) with light. In this study, an O3 pollution episode encountered in Shenzhen, South China in 2018 was investigated to illustrate the influence of aerosols on local O3 production. We used a box model with comprehensive heterogeneous mechanisms and empirical prediction of photolysis rates to reproduce the O3 episode. Results demonstrate that the aerosol light extinction and NO2 heterogeneous
