Hydrocephalus is a neurological disease caused by an unusually high level of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), which can be relieved by external ventricular drainage (EVD) insertion. However, the infection can lead to complications during the use of EVD. In this study, EVD was impregnated with three synergistic antibiotics, including rifampicin, clindamycin, and trimethoprim, to improve the antibacterial property. A review is given of current antibiotic treatment of anaerobic infections. It is emphasized that infections with Bacteroides fragilis constitute the main problem, virtually all other anaerobe organisms of clinical significance are sensitive to penicillin. Particularly useful antibiotics for infections with B. fragilis are cefoxitin, chloramphenicol, clindamycin and the nitroimidazoles. Vancomycin is the drug of choice for pseudomembranous colitis provoked by Clostridium difficile.

Malaria has been associated with acute acalculous cholecystitis, a very uncommon complication in children. We present a 5-year-old girl, originally from Equatorial-Guinea, diagnosed with severe malaria with acute kidney injury, thrombocytopenia and acute acalculous cholecystitis. She was treated with intravenous quinine and clindamycin, plus cefotaxime and metronidazole with a full resolution without surgery.

We report the outpatient management of three patients with X-linked chronic granulomatous disease, two of whom had episodes of gastric outlet obstruction and another, urinary bladder obstruction. These obstructive conditions were successfully treated with 2-week courses of orally administered corticosteroids with or without the addition of orally administered clindamycin. There were no infectious or other adverse reactions.

A case of visceral disseminated infection by Mycobacterium sherrisii in an African HIV-infected adolescent with multiple abdominal abscesses is reported. Despite multiple drug resistance to first-line antibiotics in vitro, long-term treatment with clarithromycin, moxifloxacin, and clindamycin, together with appropriate antiretroviral treatment, resulted in clinical and radiological cure after 19 months of therapy and follow-up.

Thirty nine canine S. pseudintermedius strains were examined for antibiotic susceptibility and genetic polymorphisms. All strains were methicillin-sensitive S. pseudintermedius (MSSP). Resistance to penicillin was most prevalent (66.6%), followed by resistance to neomycin (56.4%), erythromycin (53.8%), clindamycin (48.7%), chloramphenicol (48.7%), and tetracycline (46.2%). Pulsed-field electrophoresis (PFGE) showed a high genetic polymorphism in the investigated strains.

Existing therapies are often tried when new diseases are discovered or new manifestations of known organisms are recognized. This article reviews the successful application of older commonly used antibiotics to several representative "new" or "newly recognized" illnesses. Examples include new uses for the antistaphylococcal agents, penicillin, the tetracyclines, erythromycin, vancomycin, trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, pyrazinamide, metronidazole, clindamycin, and others.

OBJECTIVES: The study aims to overview German dentists' development of antibiotic and analgesic prescriptions from 2012 to 2021.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A longitudinal database analysis was performed based on the annual reports of the "Research Institute for Local Health Care Systems" (WIdO, Berlin).
