The purpose of this study was to review retrospectively the outcomes for 157 patients treated for maxillofacial fractures between 1994 and 1999 at one military hospital in Turkey. Significant data were collected according to age, gender, time of injury, type of facial injuries, cause of injury, treatment methods, and postinjury and postoperative complications. Fractures resulting from gunshot wounds were excluded in this study. Fractures were examined in two groups according to the type of fracture, i.e., isolated or combined. Methods of fixation with closed or open reduction were used to trea

Operative management of concomitant ipsilateral femur fracture and anterior hip dislocation has not been previously described in the literature. We report the case of a 15-years-old girl who was injured in a motorcycle accident and presented with a femoral shaft fracture and a concomitant ipsilateral anterior hip dislocation. Operative management consisted of an attempted closed reduction of the femoral fracture, which was unsuccessful; thus, an external fixator was temporarily applied. Subsequently, the hip dislocation was treated by open reduction through an anterolateral approach. Finally,

Fracture-separation of the distal end of the humerus in children has been reported infrequently, and may be misdiagnosed as a fracture of the condyle or a traumatic dislocation of the elbow. We discuss eight cases of a seldom reported complication following fracture-separation of the distal end of the humerus. This complication consists of dissolution of the trochlea within three to six weeks postinjury and a defect of the medial or central part of the condyle that develops later. The fractures were severely displaced fracture-separation of the distal end of the humerus with large medial or la

Opinions vary on the definition of an adequate pre-operative reduction for unstable ankle fractures that require surgical fixation. We hypothesized that residual tibiotalar subluxation may impair post-operative wound healing. This study aimed to evaluate the influence of pre-operative reduction quality on the rate of wound complications following ankle fracture fixation. A retrospective cohort study of consecutive ankle fractures in adults treated with surgical fixation at a district general hospital from January 2020 until July 2023 was conducted. Pre-operative reduction was categorized as in

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Bilateral hip dislocation is a rare injury. Bilateral asymmetrical fracture-dislocation is an even rarer type of injury. Apart from its rarity, prompt diagnosis of this condition and emergent treatment is necessary to prevent complications.
CASE PRESENTATION: Here we present a 32 years old patient admitted with bilateral asymmetrical dislocation of hips following high energy motor traffic accident.
CLINICAL FINDINGS AND INVESTIGATIONS: Computed tomography revealed bilateral asymmetrical hip dislocations (Left hip anterior dislocation and the right hip posterior d

Obturator hip dislocations are rare, typically resulting from high-energy trauma in native hips. These types of dislocations are treated with closed reduction under sedation. Open reduction and internal fixation may be performed in the presence of associated fractures. Still rarer are obturator hip dislocations that penetrate through the obturator foramen itself. These types of dislocations have only been reported three other times in the literature, all within native hips. To date, there have been no reports of foraminal obturator dislocations after total hip arthroplasty. We report of the fi

BACKGROUND: Despite the evolution of new techniques to treat nasal bone fractures, closed reduction with appropriate palpation and inspection is one of the critical basic tools to treat nasal bone fractures properly. Despite its rarity, overcorrection after closed reduction of the nasal bone fracture could happen even with experienced surgeons. This study hypothesized that sequential packing removal is mandatory for optimal outcomes based on the preoperative and postoperative Computed Tomography scans in overcorrected cases. This is the first study to evaluate the efficacy of sequential nasal

BACKGROUND: Diabetes is a risk factor for complications related to displaced ankle fractures. Limited literature exists comparing complication rates in nonoperative versus operative treatment of displaced ankle fractures in diabetics. No study has highlighted the natural history of nonoperative treatment of displaced ankle fractures in diabetics.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed all adult ankle fractures from September 2011 through December 2014. Inclusion was limited to ambulatory adults (>18 years) with closed, displaced (widened mortise) ankle fractures with diabetes mellitus. Nonopera

INTRODUCTION: Total talar dislocations are uncommon injuries and usually seen following high velocity injuries. Total talar dislocations (missing talus) without fractures around the ankle are extremely rare. There are no consensuses on the best treatment of such injuries. To best of our knowledge very few cases have been reported in literature. We hereby report a closed total talar dislocation in a 25 year old male without an associated fracture around ankle. He was managed with emergency closed reduction and below knee splint. At one year follow up there were no complications.

The objective of this case report is to describe the substantial sagittal correction of spinal hyperkyphosis alongside fracture fixation. In advanced ankylosing spondylitis (AS), the spine is usually fused, hyperkyphotic, and due to deformity, as well as improper bone remodeling, predisposed to fractures. These fractures, mostly unstable, require surgical treatment. The authors present fracture management with concomitant deformity correction at the fracture site and pedicle subtraction osteotomy (PSO) below the fracture, showing the benefits of performing the procedures with the patient in a

This is a case report of a four-year-old boy who suffered a forearm fracture managed with closed reduction and casting for six weeks. Postoperatively, the patient showed symptoms of median nerve affection which was misinterpreted as neuropraxia. Ultrasonography of the forearm revealed that the median nerve was trapped in the radius fracture site. The patient underwent a second operation with neurolysis and nerve grafting. This case report highlights the use of ultrasonography in the diagnostics of nerve entrapment neuropathy.

BACKGROUND: Closed fractures of the distal third of the forearm are the most common fractures of childhood, but the method of immobilization after closed reduction is controversial. This study was undertaken to determine whether below-the-elbow casts are as effective as above-the-elbow casts in immobilizing these types of fractures and to identify patient and treatment considerations that are related to loss of reduction.
METHODS: We designed a blinded, randomized, controlled trial. The criteria for reduction and remanipulation were set a priori. The primary outcome measure was fracture immob

BACKGROUND: Nasal bone fractures are the most common type of facial bone fracture. Closed reduction is the standard treatment and is typically followed by intranasal packing. Conventional materials such as Vaseline or Furacin roll gauze and Merocel are widely used, but biodegradable synthetic polyurethane foam (SPF, Nasopore) has recently gained popularity as it does not require removal. This study focused on postoperative pain primarily caused by mucosal injury, and investigated whether polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), a mucosal protective agent, could reduce pain when applied to SPF packing.

HYPOTHESIS: Traumatic inferior shoulder dislocation (luxatio erecta) injuries are rare, comprising less than 0.5% of all shoulder dislocations. Few cases have been reported, and the outcome of treatment has been ill defined.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Between 1968 and 2000, 18 patients (20 shoulders) with luxatio erecta were evaluated at our institution. Two patients (2 shoulders) were lost to follow-up, leaving 16 patients (18 shoulders) for long-term follow-up (average, 9 years). Associated injuries included peripheral nerve injury, humeral fracture, acromial fracture, and rotator cuff tear. Al

BACKGROUND: Displaced pelvic fractures present real surgical challenges because of complex three-dimensional deformity patterns and proximity to vital structures, with conventional manual reduction techniques limited by accuracy constraints and radiation exposure. Although robotic assistance shows promise in preclinical studies, its clinical effectiveness remains unproven in randomized clinical trials (RCTs).
QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: (1) Does robotic closed reduction improve reduction quality compared with manual closed reduction in displaced pelvic fractures? (2) Can robotic closed reduction redu

BACKGROUND: The treatment of proximal humerus fractures (PHF) is largely surgeon dependent with no clear guidelines for selecting the optimal method of treatment.
AIMS: The aim of this study was to evaluate trends and variations in treatment methods of PHF in the United States from 2004 to 2012 and to determine the regional differences in treatment.
METHODS: The National Inpatient Sample was used to identify all patient discharges with diagnosis codes for PHF and the data were classified based on ICD-9 procedure codes. Patient and hospital demographics were also analyzed. Simple linear regre

Having reviewed 28 cases of fractures of the femoral head complicating traumatic dislocation of the hip the authors point out that the problems to be solved are the reduction of the dislocation (close or surgical) and the fate of the femoral head fragment. Close reduction succeeded in 12 cases, failed in 12 other cases, was not attempted 4 times. Open reduction was performed 16 times. When the femoral fragment was small, close reduction was attempted and the femoral head fragment neglected (10 cases). In three cases close reduction was attempted despite a big femoral fragment. These cases were
