Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is a common toxic gas in chicken houses that endangers the health of poultry. Harbin has a cold climate in winter, and the conflict between heat preservation and ventilation in poultry houses is obvious. In this study, we investigated the H2S content in chicken houses during winter in Harbin and found that the H2S concentration exceeded the national standard in individual chicken houses. Then, a model of H2S exposure was established in an environmental simulation chamber. We also developed a NaHS exposure model of chicken peripheral blood lymphocytes in vitro. Proteomics

The objective of this work is to develop a Bioheat model to predict the thermal responses of people with tetraplegia (TP) under hot, cold and neutral ambient conditions as well as different physical activities suitable for their level of injury. The focus is on TP with impairment or loss of motor and/or sensory function in C1 to C7 segments of the spinal cord due to damage of neural elements within the spinal canal. Starting from transient multi-segmented Bioheat model of able-bodied (AB) people, specific modifications were performed reflecting the changes in physiology due to the injury affec

Extending transplant criteria to include livers obtained from donors after cardiac death (DCD) could increase the liver donor pool, but conventional simple cold storage of these ischemic organs can lead to poor graft function after transplantation. Experimental normothermic machine perfusion has previously proven to be useful for the recovery and preservation of DCD livers, but it is more complicated than conventional cold storage, and, therefore, is perhaps not practical during the entire preservation period. In clinical situations, the combined use of simple cold storage and normothermic per

Drowning and near drowning is a common cause of accidental death all over the world; specially in road traffic accidents over bridges, swimming pool and boat tragedies. Cold water drowning resulting in hypothermia can lead to instant death before actual drowning. Five cases of near drowning (ND) in cold water, who presented with varied clinical picture like coma with decerebrate rigidity and fixed dilated pupils, hypertension with coma and delayed pulmonary oedema (Secondary drowning) are reported. Energetic management with continuous positive airway pressure was very rewarding in all patients

Examination of 25 patients with trauma to the spinal column and cord revealed vasomotor disorders in the upper extremities. These disorders were shown to develop according to a definite pattern and depend on the duration of the injury and the severity of neurological disorders. According to the clinical findings the vascular disturbances were divided into 2 groups: spasmodic and spasmodic-atonic with pathognomonic signs. The importance of vasomotor disturbances in the diagnosis of complicated fractures of the vertebral column is outlined. The severity of the attendant vascular disorders should

Under ideal circumstances, severely frostbitten extremities are rapidly rewarmed and treated with thrombolytic therapy within 6 to 24 hours. In an "inner city," urban environment, most patients who suffer frostbite injuries present in a delayed fashion, sustain repeated injuries further complicated by psychological issues or intoxication, and are rarely ideal candidates for thrombolytic therapy within the prescribed timeframe. We describe our experience with the treatment of urban frostbite injuries. A retrospective review of patients with cold injuries sustained between November 2013 and Marc

Open globe injuries are full-thickness injuries sustained to the eye wall (cornea or sclera), which cause immediate drops in intraocular pressure that may lead to retinal detachment and permanent vision loss if not treated rapidly after injury. The current standard of care for open globe injuries consists of suturing the margins closed, but the technique can be time-consuming, requires specialized training and equipment, and can lead to patient discomfort, abrasion, and infection from eye rubbing. We engineered an injectable, thermoresponsive sealant (TRS) and a custom tool to occlude open glo

BACKGROUND: Causalgia is not familiar to most physicians whose training and experience are limited to civilian practice.
HYPOTHESIS: Through a thorough review of the literature, we attempted to determine the boundaries of causalgia and separate it from other sympathetically related disorders.
DATA SOURCES: Database search for English-language articles in MEDLINE and Index Medicus up to the year 2000 as both keyword and subject under causalgia.
STUDY SELECTION: References that described any new cases referred to as "causalgia" by their authors were included in a meta-analysis.

Reperfusion injury, precipitated by lack of oxygen, is likely to play a major role in many clinical conditions, including shock, coronary artery occlusion disease, and solid organ transplantation. Certain tissues, such as the intestinal mucosa, may be especially susceptible because of the specific microvascular anatomy. Structural changes include not only swelling of the organelles but also the entire cell due to the entry of water and electrolytes. Lysosomal ruptures precede cell death. Other key substances which either participate in or are part of oxygen free radical formation in tissue inj

BACKGROUND: Finger amputations are the most common injuries to the upper limb. There are many options in the management of fingertip or finger amputations. We report our experience using cooling composite graft (Hirase technique) for distal finger amputation, as alternative to microsurgery implantation.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We collected a case series of eight patients and report on the clinical outcomes after a 10-month follow-up period.
RESULTS: The amputated part survived almost completely in six patients; in these cases, the fingertip amputations were classified, according to the Allen c

Individuals with borderline personality disorder (BPD), compared to controls, report a relative absence of acute pain. In contrast, BPD is overrepresented among chronic pain patients, suggesting they experience a relative excess of chronic pain. To date, this "pain paradox" has been only partially explored; no study has examined both acute and chronic pain in the same sample. In addition, previous research has not fully examined the effect of nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) on either acute or chronic pain experience in BPD. Undergraduates (N = 206), oversampled for those high in BPD features, c

Twelve children aged between 18 months and 11 years old who had sustained a severe fingertip amputation with total or subtotal pulp loss were treated with a distal-based thenar flap. The injuries were palmar oblique amputations or avulsion injuries involving the pulp and the nail bed. The pedicles of the thenar flaps were divided after 18 to 25 days and none suffered any necrosis. At the final follow-up, no interphalangeal joint contractures were found, the average two point discrimination was 5mm, the thenar scar was asymptomatic and the subcutaneous tissue of the thenar flap was providing su

The authors evaluated the relationship between sympathetic nerve activity and transcutaneous oxygen tension (TcpO2) in normal and ischemic lower extremities. Dorsal foot TcpO2 was measured by using oxygen-sensing electrodes with surface temperatures of 42 degrees C and 45 degrees C; in theory, changes in sympathetic activity should affect vasomotor tone and TcpO2 in skin beneath an electrode at 42 degrees C (submaximal vasodilation), but not at 45 degrees C (maximal vasodilation). The vasodilation index (TcpO2 at 42 degrees C/TcpO2 at 45 degrees C) was created as an index of vasomotor tone (va

Microsurgery has improved our ability to deal with severe injuries to the upper extremity. Good medical management and judgment plus a sense of realism communicated from physician to patient is as important as the surgical technique.

INTRODUCTION: The prevalence of thermal skin injuries is high. Despite new research findings, skin burns and acute cold-contact injuries, together with resulting tissue damage, are not entirely understood. In particular, little is known about how these types of injuries alter the biomechanical properties of skin.
OBJECTIVE: This study evaluates hyperthermic- and hypothermic-induced alterations in the biomechanical properties of human skin using a skin elasticity measurement device.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: In 54 cases, local hypothermia (15°C and 5°C) and local hyperthermia (40°C and 45°C) wer

BACKGROUND: Fingertip amputations can be debilitating and challenging to treat, due to the need for both function and cosmesis. We studied the functional outcomes of patients receiving an antegrade homodigital neurovascular island flap for fingertip amputations.
METHODS: From 2004 to 2013, we performed 13 cases of antegrade homodigital neurovascular island flaps. Functional outcomes were studied. Four had Allen Zone II and nine had Zone III injuries. Seven were performed as secondary surgery. The mean followup period was 36 weeks.
RESULTS: All the flaps survived. Ten of 11 had less than or e

Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) is divided into two types. Type I occurs without obvious nerve injury. In type II, a peripheral nerve injury is present, although pain may not be limited to the distribution of that nerve. Diagnosis rests on the presence of a constellation of symptoms and signs. These include extreme sensitivity, changing skin colour and temperature, trophic changes in the skin, nails and hair, reduced range of motion and loss of function. These features are accompanied by considerable pain for which no other unifying diagnosis can be made. CRPS typically starts with an in
