The expression of type VI collagen was studied immunohistochemically in 26 cases of superficial fibromatoses (palmar, plantar and penile) using an immunoperoxidase method for light microscopic visualization. Mast cells are assuming importance not only in their familiar role in acute allergic and parasitic diseases but also in chronic inflammatory, immunologic and fibrotic states. We report on 2 patients, one female and one male transsexual; in both, Type III stress urinary incontinence developed after gender reassignment surgery. Both patients were treated by periurethral injection of gluteraldehyde cross-linked collagen resulting in a marked symptomatic improvement in association with a significant rise in abdominal leak point pressures. We believe these are the first reported cases of collagen injection being used for urinary incontinence after gender reassignment surgery.

Undulin, a novel noncollagenous extracellular matrix protein, was isolated from skin and placenta. In polyacrylamide gels most of the unreduced protein migrates with Mr above 1,000,000 yielding bands A (Mr 270,000), B1 (Mr 190,000), and B2 (Mr 180,000) after reduction. A 39-year-old man developed persistent bleeding into the ventricular system after having undergone needle biopsy of what was presumed to be a left frontal neoplasm. This review will mainly highlight data from selected, independent studies which collectively implicate a primary role for T cells in the pathogenesis of collagen arthritis in rats. Sera from 16 patients with Dupuytren's contracture were tested for IgG and IgM antibodies to native and denatured human collagen types I, II, III, IV, V and VI. IgG antibody to at least one collagen type was found in 11/16 (69%) of these patients, compared with 27/96 (28%) normal adult blood donor controls. The prevalence of antibody to denatured type II collagen was raised, and although there was no overall increase in HLA-DR4 compared with a control population, this antibody was associated with HLA-DR4 in this patient group.

Mesothelial cells were isolated from the peritoneal surface of rats using trypsinization. The cells were polygonal-shaped and proliferated rapidly forming confluent cultures.
