Integration of trachoma control into primary health care: the Tanzanian experience.

Tanzania was among the first countries to launch a trachoma control program with support from the International Trachoma Initiative (ITI) using surgery, antibiotics, facial cleanliness, and environmental improvement (SAFE) strategy with azithromycin. More than one million children less than 10 years of age in Tanzania have active disease and an estimated 54,000 people have trichiasis. Since 2000, Tanzania has implemented major health sector reform that have been carried out in three phases in 114 districts. Missed opportunities for immunisation in children.

All opportunities for immunisation in children should be utilised properly, as sustaining high levels of full immunisation coverage is essential to meet the goal of eradication of poliomyelitis as well as control the other vaccine-preventable diseases; yet many opportunities for immunisation are missed in all types of health facilities, even in teaching hospitals. Reducing such missed opportunities is the cheapest way to increase immunisation coverage. The present study discusses the problem of missed opportunities for immunisation in children in Paediatric Outpatient Department and Immunisati

[The Freiburg Scarlet Fever Scheme, a guide for clinical practice in frequent occurrence of Streptococcus-A infections in schools and other community facilities according to paragraphs 44-48 of the Federal Infection Legislation].

In the past years, the endemic occurrence of A-streptococcal infections in communal institutions for children and other reasons called for an increased number of activities to combat such diseases. In view of the multitude of different epidemiological situations, differentiated suggestions favouring a holistic strategy to combat such infections were elaborated, e.g. with regard to therapy, prophylaxis and the practice of readmission to community institutions. The methods of application have still to be improved upon.

Expanded Programme on Immunization in Thailand.

In 1976, despite a 20-year immunization program, vaccine-preventable diseases (other than smallpox) remained important causes of morbidity and mortality in Thailand. Three major problems were identified: a lack of proper target age groups, inadequate vaccination coverage, and a defective cold chain. The National Expanded Programme on Immunization (EPI), focusing on diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus, poliomyelitis, measles, and tuberculosis, was initiated on a nationwide basis in 1977. Data indicate that the program has reduced morbidity and mortality from most vaccine-preventable diseases in Thai

Viral vaccines and antivirals: current use and future prospects.

The evolution of viral vaccines from the time of Jennerian prophylaxis to today's recombinant technology has been a continuing story of success. From the relatively crude or "first generation" vaccines for smallpox, rabies, and yellow fever followed a second and third generation of improved or new viral vaccines. The application of techniques for attenuating, inactivating, and partially purifying candidate viruses yielded safe, effective vaccines against influenza, poliomyelitis, measles, mumps, and rubella. With the advent of effective national immunization programs in the United States and o

[International health regulations--evaluation and trends].

The current International Health Regulations (IHR) were adopted by the Twenty-second World Health Assembly in 1969 and amended in 1973 and 1981. They are a revised and consolidated version of the International Sanitary Regulations which were adopted by the Fourth World Health Assembly in 1951, themselves based on the previous International Sanitary Conventions. The purpose of the IHR is to ensure maximum security against the international spread of diseases with a minimum interference to world traffic. Over the years the IHR included cholera, yellow fever, plague, smallpox, typhus and relapsin
