Nineteen of 23 serum samples from patients with secondary syphilis, six of 24 from patients with primary syphilis, and four of seven from patients with early latent syphilis had complement-dependent autolymphocytotoxic reactivity at 15 degrees C. During August and September 1988, we collected adult mosquitoes from 14 locations in the Senegal River basin to search for evidence of Rift Valley fever (RVF) viral activity one year after the 1987 outbreak, which occurred along the Senegal-Mauritania border. The methanol extract of Leptospira interrogans serovar canicola was purified by precipitation with acetone or acetone and chloroform. The antigenicity of the antigen was not altered by heating or treatment with pepsin and pronase. However the antigenicity was lost when the antigen was treated with periodic acid. Chemical analysis revealed the presence of 40% carbohydrate (22% methylpentose, 28% hexoses), 4% protein, 20% lipid and 2.7% phosphate. The complement fixation test with sera from patients with leptospirosis agreed with the microscopic agglutination reaction.

An antiglobulin hemagglutination test was developed for detection of antibody directed to Histoplasma capsulatum and Blastomyces dermatitidis. The substances responsible for spontaneous agglutination of erythrocytes were removed from histoplasmin and blastomycin by vacuum dialysis, and partial purification of the antigens by gel filtration chromatography on Sephadex G-150 allowed removal of additional nonantigenic material which competed with the antigens for binding on the erythrocyte surface. Recent developments in syphilis serology are set down. The new specific tests for treponema pallidum are described. Reactivity in different stages of the disease including congenital and neurosyphilis is discussed. An outline is given of the possibilities of the IgM-FTA-ABS and 19 S IgM-FTA-ABS tests. Syphilis serology today requires only 3 tests: a screening procedure, where the specific AMHA-TP is the method of choice, FTA-ABS test should be used for confirmation, and the quantitative VDRL in order to follow up the effectiveness of treatment.
