Trichotillomania (TTM) and eating disorders (ED) share many phenomenological similarities, including ritualized compulsive behaviors. Given this, and that comorbid EDs may represent additional functional burden to hair pullers, we sought to identify factors that predict diagnosis of an ED in a TTM population. Subjects included 555 adult females (age range 18-65) with DSM-IV-TR TTM or chronic hair pullers recruited from multiple sites. 7.2% (N=40) of our TTM subjects met criteria for an ED in their lifetime. In univariable regression analysis, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), Yale-Brown Obs

Thought action fusion (TAF), whereby internal thoughts are perceived to exert equivalent effects to external actions, is a form of magical thinking. Psychiatric disorders associated with TAF (e.g. schizophrenia; obsessive compulsive disorder) can feature atypical social cognition. We explored relationships between TAF and empathy in 273 healthy young adults. TAF was directly correlated with higher personal distress, but not perspective taking, fantasy or empathic concern. TAF moral (the belief that thinking about an action/behaviour is morally equivalent to actually performing that behaviour)

Although the association between substance use and violence has been well established, knowledge on predictors for violent victimization of individuals treated for alcohol use disorder (AUD) or drug use disorder (DUD) is lacking. Using Goldstein's tripartite conceptual framework, this study examines the relationship between substance use and violent victimization. Data were derived from national registers on persons aged between 15 and 75 years, living in Denmark, and admitted for AUD or DUD treatment during 2006-2016 (n = 82,767). Rates of new incidence of violent victimization were estimated

Eating disorders (EDs), including anorexia nervosa (AN), bulimia nervosa (BN), and binge eating disorder (BED), frequently co-occur with substance use disorders (SUDs), affecting 20-30 % of individuals with either condition. This significant overlap is driven by shared neurobiological mechanisms, such as disruptions in dopamine, opioid, and cannabinoid systems, as well as by psychological traits including impulsivity, anxiety, and stress. While AN is often characterized by restrictive behaviors, BN and BED involve compulsive binge episodes, mirroring addiction patterns observed in SUDs. The cu

The aim of this work was to draw attention to potentially life-threatening symptoms associated with Tourette syndrome (TS) and to explore their relationship to TS comorbidities. Medical records of all patients with TS evaluated at our Movement Disorders Clinic between July 2003 and July 2006 were reviewed. Data on patients with malignant TS, defined as >or=2 emergency room (ER) visits or >or=1 hospitalizations for TS symptoms or its associated behavioral comorbidities, were entered into a dataset and analyzed. Five illustrative cases are described. Of 333 TS patients evaluated during the 3-yea

BACKGROUND: Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SRIs) are recommended treatments for pediatric obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), but their relative efficacy and acceptability have not been comprehensively examined. Further, it remains unclear whether the efficacy of in-person CBT is conserved when delivered in other formats, such as over telephone/webcam or as Internet-delivered CBT (ICBT).
METHODS: PubMed, PsycINFO, trial registries, and previous systematic reviews were searched for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing CBT (in-person, webcam/tele

BACKGROUND: Anorexia Nervosa is highly comorbid with depressive, anxiety, and obsessive-compulsive spectrum disorders. However, it has not previously been reported as comorbid with antisocial personality traits, except when substance use disorder is also identified. We present an unusual case of a patient with resistant anorexia nervosa and comorbid conduct disorder. This case was also unique in that the juvenile justice system was involved during treatment.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 13-year-old female was admitted to our pediatric hospital for the treatment of anorexia nervosa. She had a history

Exposure and response prevention (ERP) is an effective treatment for obsessive-compulsive disorder. However, ERP's distressful nature may be too demanding for some patients, resulting in low engagement with treatment or even dropout. The current review aimed to summarize and categorize the components of ERP plus add-on protocols. Studies were deemed eligible when an ERP treatment was combined with a psychological add-on in the treatment of adult obsessive-compulsive disorder patients. Nineteen studies fulfilled the inclusion criteria. Add-ons were divided into eight categories: acceptance and

After the outbreak of Coronavirus disease was declared a pandemic by the World Health Organization, this resulted in extraordinary public health measures to control the infection, such as entire countries being placed under quarantine. The psychopathological consequences of the pandemic and quarantine were anticipated to be of particular relevance, especially in patients with psychiatric disorders such as Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD). Aim of the present report was to describe the impact of COVID-19 pandemics within a sample of Italian patients affected by OCD. Sociodemographic and clini

In Parkinson's disease (PD), there is increasing evidence for disorders in the impulsive-compulsive spectrum, related to the disease itself, to the pharmacological management of this disease or to both. These disorders comprise dopamine deficiency syndrome (with immediate reward seeking behaviour), dopamine dependency syndrome (with addictive behaviour), dopamine dysregulation syndrome (with both addictive behaviour and stereotyped behaviour) and impulse control disorders (such as pathological gambling, compulsive shopping, binge eating and hypersexuality). These disorders are especially seen

This study evaluated the prevalence, risk factors and morbidity associated with specific phobia of illness. Subjects were from a random, community telephone survey of 500 persons age 40 to 65 who lived in Johnson County, Iowa, USA. Forty-three subjects reported that illness fears substantially bothered them personally or affected their medical care, work, or social life. Twenty-one of these subjects could be contacted and agreed to a semistructured interview designed to diagnose specific phobia of illness and screen for other common psychiatric disorders. Based on the interview, 10 subjects me

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to systematically identify and characterize the demographic and clinical features of patients with obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) and psychotic symptoms.
METHODS: From a total of 475 patients with DSM-III-R OCD evaluated and/or treated in an outpatient OCD clinic, 67 patients (14%) were identified as having psychotic symptoms in addition to OCD. Psychotic symptoms were defined as hallucinations, delusions, and/or thought disorder. Clinical and demographic data on these probands were collected from semistructured interviews and compared with data

OBJECTIVE: In recent years there has been some ambiguity about the way hoarding and OCD are related to each other. The present study examines the differences between persons with OCD/hoarding and OCD/non-hoarding and examines which characteristics are associated with the OCD/hoarding group. Information is established about prevalences, socio-demographical characteristics, OCD and related characteristics, OCD subtypes, comorbidity (depression, anxiety disorders and PTSD) and personality traits.
METHODS: Data from baseline assessment of The Netherlands Obsessive Compulsive Disorder Association

Food addiction (FA) is an emerging construct describing a compulsive and dysregulated pattern of food consumption that parallels mechanisms observed in substance-related addictions. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence and clinical correlates of FA in a sample of 141 Italian adult inpatients diagnosed with eating disorders (ED). Participants completed standardized self-report instruments assessing FA (YFAS 2.0), binge-eating behaviours (BES), ED-related psychopathology (EDI-3), body image distress (BUT), and general psychological symptoms (SCL-90) at admission (T0) and discharge (T1)

Introduction: Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS) is a non-invasive brain stimulation intervention that has been investigated for several psychiatric disorders, including Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD). As there are several candidate brain regions for targeting OCD relevant networks, clinical studies using tDCS have considerably varied in terms of the electrode montages used. Computer modeling of electric field currents induced by tDCS can help guiding the research of relevant targets for OCD. In this review, the authors used this tool to investigate targeted brain areas from p

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is considered one of the most debilitating disorders worldwide. Data suggests that trauma may be a significant source of not only posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), but also OCD. An epidemiologic study of the general population found the risk for OCD to be increased 10-fold in persons with PTSD. The National Vietnam Veterans Readjustment Study found the prevalence of OCD to be 5.2% in war-zone veterans and other studies highlighted PTSD-OCD comorbidity rates ranging from 41% to 70%. However, the frequency of diagnosed OCD is low among veterans (0.6%), and

The clinical surveillance and active management of Tourette syndrome (TS) and other primary chronic tic disorders cannot be limited to tics, as these patients manifest a spectrum of sensory-, behavioral-, cognitive-, and sleep-related problems that have a major impact on their functioning and quality of life, influencing enormously clinical decision making on a routine basis. The sensory phenomena of primary tic disorders consist of premonitory urges and heightened sensitivity to external somatosensory and interoceptive stimuli. Recent evidence suggests that raised interoceptive awareness may

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is characterized by intrusive thoughts and repetitive behaviors, with associated brain abnormalities in various regions. This study explores the correlation between neural biomarkers and the response to transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS) in OCD patients. Using structural MRI data from two tDCS trials involving 55 OCD patients and 28 controls, cortical thickness, and gray matter morphometry was analyzed. Findings revealed thicker precentral and paracentral areas in OCD patients, compared to control (p < 0.001). Correlations between cortical thickn

Family accommodation is a common, treatment-relevant construct related to obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) severity and treatment outcome. This initial study examined the nature, incidence, and clinical correlates of family accommodation in Chinese adults with OCD and their relative or person in a close relationship. One hundred four outpatients diagnosed with OCD completed self-report measures of obsessive-compulsive, anxiety, and depression symptoms. Additionally, the individuals with OCD and a relative completed a measure of family accommodation and impairment. Patient-reports of family
