Previous research has documented high rates of STDs and increased risk of HIV infection among female sex workers (FSWs) in Mexico; however, little is known about the sexual risk behaviors of this population. The purpose of this study was to explore work history, context of sex work, sexual risk practices, client characteristics, attitudes toward condoms, and potential barriers to condom use in a sample of FSWs in Tijuana, Mexico. Analysis of qualitative data from 25 FSWs revealed that most women entered the sex trade at a young age ( M = 23 years), primarily as a result of financial need. Fort…

PURPOSE: To describe the sexual health practices of homeless adolescents, examine relationships among variables in a conceptual model of sex … social support, future time perspective, connectedness, perceived health status, intentions to use condoms, and condom self-efficacy. A parsimonious model with good fit indicated that the only direct paths to safe-sex behaviors were future time perspective, intentions to use condoms, and self-efficacy to use condoms, and the direct paths to sexual self-c …

To study incidence and risk factors of heterosexually transmitted HIV infection, we followed a cohort of 343 seronegative women, stable, monogamous partners of infected men whose only risk of acquiring HIV was sexual exposure to the infected partner. Nineteen seroconversions occurred in 529.6 person years (py) of observation, yielding an incidence rate of 3.6 per 100 py. The incidence rate was 7.2 per 100 py among women who did not always use or never used condoms and 1.1 among those who always used them [relative risk (RR) 6.6, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.9-21.9]. Anal sex was associated w…

BACKGROUND: Increases in sexually transmitted infections among gay and bisexual men (GBM) over the past decade have coincided with declines in condom use and rapid uptake of HIV preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP). We explored the impact of an antimicrobial gel-based point-of-sex intervention (gel-PSI) with a lower efficacy for reducing gonorrhea transmission risk than condoms on population-level gonorrhea incidence among GBM in Victoria, Australia.
METHODS: A deterministic compartmental model of HIV and gonorrhea transmission was used to project annual gonorrhea incidence from 2020 to 2025. Indiv…

INTRODUCTION: In the USA, incarcerated women are disproportionately affected by sexually transmitted infections (STIs) including HIV. Transi … men described challenges in uptake of existing low-cost sexual health prevention strategies such as condoms. They identified strategies to facilitate use of prevention tools, and to increase protective behaviours relating to sexual health during the transition from incarceration to the community. For example, women described methods for eroticising male a …

BACKGROUND: Nearly 40% of Global Fund money goes toward procurement. However, no analyses have been published to show how costs vary across regions and time, despite the availability of procurement data collected through the Global Fund's price and quality reporting system.
METHODOLOGY: We analyzed data for the 3 most widely procured commodities for the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of HIV. These were male condoms, HIV rapid tests, and the antiretroviral (ARV) combination of lamivudine/nevirapine/zidovudine. The compared costs, first across time (2005-2012), then across regions, and fi…

INTRODUCTION: Effective public health interventions to reduce the incidence of sexually transmitted disease (STD), including HIV, among women are urgently needed.
METHODS: A randomized trial among STD clinic patients of two types of counseling regarding methods to reduce disease transmission: a 'hierarchical' message (HP), with counseling on male condoms, female condoms, diaphragms, cervical caps, and spermicides (three formulations) and a single method message (SM) covering male condoms only or female condoms only. For this analysis, 1591 subjects received one of three educational messages a…

BACKGROUND: The aims of the study were to estimate HIV prevalence among sex workers (SWs) in Jamaica and to identify risk factors associated with HIV infection.
METHOD: Face to face interviews and HIV testing of 450 SWs across Jamaica were conducted in 2005. Participants were identified by key informants.
RESULTS: About 9% of SWs were HIV-positive. HIV-positive SWs tended to be older, less educated, have a history of crack/cocaine use, and were less likely to be aware of the Ministry of Health's prevention programme. More than 90% of SWs reported having easy access to condoms and using condo…

BACKGROUND: Women who are the most vulnerable to sexually transmitted diseases/HIV are often unable to consistently use condoms. One potential alternative method currently under investigation is the diaphragm.
GOALS: The goals of this study were to assess diaphragm uptake and use over time in Zimbabwe and to identify factors associated with self-reported consistent diaphragm use.
STUDY: Women attending family planning clinics who were inconsistent condom users received a diaphragm intervention and were followed for 6 months.
RESULTS: Of the 186 participants, 99% ever reported using the diap…

Cocaine users have a higher incidence of risky sexual behavior and HIV infection than nonusers. Our aim was to measure whether safer sex discount rates-a measure of the likelihood of having immediate unprotected sex versus waiting to have safer sex-differed between controls and cocaine users of varying severity. Of the 162 individuals included in the primary data analyses, 69 met the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (4th ed., text rev.; DSM-IV-TR) criteria for cocaine dependence, 29 were recreational cocaine users who did not meet the dependence criteria, and 64 were contr

Between February, 1988, and January, 1991, 222 women with histologically proven cervical wart virus infection without dysplasia were randomized to be managed by 1 of 4 protocols. Group 1 acted as control, Group 2 were asked to use condoms for 6 months, Group 3 underwent local ablative therapy and Group 4 were asked to use condoms after ablative therapy. Assessment at 2 and 3 years of follow-up showed no statistically significant superiority for treatment over observation. Defaulters from follow-up were over 50% by the completion of the study.

The prevalence of bacterial sexually transmitted infections among clients of female sex workers (FSWs) was studied. A total of 156 condoms were collected from clients of 13 sex workers during three consecutive days. Condoms used by clients of FSWs were collected and DNA was extracted from the seminal fluid and used for the diagnosis of Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Chlamydia trachomatis and Trichomonas vaginalis by polymerase chain reaction. The prevalence of N. gonorrhoeae, C. trachomatis and T. vaginalis among clients of FSWs was 4.5% (7/156), 2.5% (4/156) and 7% (11/156), respectively.

Forty-four cervical cancer inpatients and 44 individually age-matched controls were surveyed. As a result, the number of the cases whose partners used condoms for contraception was significantly lower than that of the controls (P less than 0.01; the odds ratio = 0.2). The same result was obtained after adjusting possible confounding variables such as the number of pregnancies and use of other contraceptive methods. Barrier-type contraceptives like condoms may reduce the incidence of sexually transmitted viral infections, which it has been suggested are associated with the disease.
