Appropriate assessment of disease burden in patients with peritoneal surface malignancy (PSM) is critical for treatment decision-making, and conventional cross-sectional imaging (computed tomography and/or MRI) often underestimates burden of disease. Advances in imaging for PSM include novel functional imaging modalities that target cells unique to the tumor microenvironment. Novel alternative methods of diagnosis and disease monitoring are also potentially applicable to management of PSM. These include forms of "liquid biopsy" targeting circulating tumor DNA. Novel regional therapies include

Hyperinsulinism of infancy is a major cause of persistent hypoglycaemia in the newborn period. Transient mild self-limiting hyperinsulinaemia and hypoglycaemia have been described in neonates born to mothers taking ritodrine therapy for premature labour. Ritodrine crosses the placental barrier and enters the fetal circulation readily but the mechanism of how it causes hyperinsulinaemia and hypoglycaemia is unclear. We report the case of severe prolonged hyperinsulinaemic hypoglycamia in a neonate born to a mother taking ritodrine therapy from 16 weeks' gestation for preterm labour. The hyperin

Whether there is a causal relationship between circulating levels of systemic inflammatory regulators and sepsis remains unclear. To determine whether genetically predicted circulating levels of cytokines are associated with risk of sepsis, a bidirectional two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis based on the a STROBE-compliant cross-sectional observational study was conducted utilizing gene-wide association study (GWAS) data. Selected with rigor, single-nucleotide polymorphisms served as instrumental variables for subsequent MR analysis. The preferred method for the MR analysis was th

The immunity of a host population against specific influenza A strains can influence a number of important biological processes, from the emergence of new virus strains to the effectiveness of vaccination programmes. However, the development of an individual's long-lived antibody response to influenza A over the course of a lifetime remains poorly understood. Accurately describing this immunological process requires a fundamental understanding of how the mechanisms of boosting and cross-reactivity respond to repeated infections. Establishing the contribution of such mechanisms to antibody titr

Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) are promising nanomaterials for cancer imaging and drug delivery owing to their near-infrared optical properties and tumor accumulation via the enhanced permeability and retention effect. Polyethylene glycol-modified phospholipids (PL-PEG) are widely used to disperse SWCNTs for in vivo applications; however, whether this formulation represents the optimal PEGylation strategy, particularly under repeated administration, remains unclear. Here, we perform a systematic head-to-head comparison between conventional 5 kDa PL-PEG/SWCNTs and SWCNTs encapsulated w

Dengue fever is a vector-borne disease that is transmitted by the aedes aegypti mosquito. The disease is caused by four different viral serotypes which are DEN-1, DEN-2, DEN-3, and DEN-4. Of these serotypes, DEN-1 and DEN-2 are the most prevalent, and their co-circulation presents complex disease dynamics due to the antibody-dependent enhancement (ADE) phenomenon as well as the cross-immunity interaction of these viral serotypes. In this study, we formulate a novel multi-strain sequential super-infection model that captures the primary and secondary infection dynamics with temporary cross immu

SUMMARYHighly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) viruses, especially subtype H5N1, have caused major outbreaks in poultry and serious human infections since the first description of "fowl plague" in 1878. Over time, these viruses have expanded their host range, causing huge losses in domestic poultry, spreading among wild bird populations, and occasionally infecting humans. Understanding how influenza viruses adapt and cross species barriers depends on analyzing their fundamental molecular characteristics. Key features such as the polybasic cleavage site within the hemagglutinin protein and the

Multiple studies over the last decade have established that Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD) are associated with changes in the gut microbiome. These alterations in organismal composition result in changes in the abundances of functions encoded by the microbial community, including metabolic capabilities, which likely impact host disease mechanisms. Gut microbes access dietary components and other molecules made by the host and produce metabolites that can enter circulation and cross the blood-brain barrier (BBB). In recent years, several microbial metabolites have been associa

The emergence of Zika virus (ZIKV) and its associated neonatal and congenital complications pose a threat to global health, particularly in tropical and subtropical regions with co-circulation of related flaviviruses and intense vector proliferation. Diagnosis of ZIKV by RT-PCR is limited to the viraemic phase and is not always accessible in low-income tropical settings, while serological tests often show cross-reactivity with other flaviviruses. Given the similarity of ZIKV symptoms to those of other arboviruses, but the different prognosis and risks, it is important to develop specific and a

Seasonal influenza A/H3N2 poses a significant public health burden due to its rapid antigenic evolution, necessitating frequent vaccine updates. This study systematically analysed the antigenic evolution of 14 H3N2 vaccine strains (2000-2022) using pseudovirus-based neutralization assays and antigenic cartography. Vaccine strains exhibited cross-neutralization patterns, with higher reactivity among strains from adjacent years, forming six antigenic clusters. Key amino acid mutations (e.g. 144K, 189N) were identified as critical drivers of antigenic variation, with clustering-specific effects o

Vertically transmitted infections are a significant cause of fetal morbidity and mortality during pregnancy and pose substantial risks to fetal development. These infections are primarily transmitted to the fetus through two routes: (1) direct invasion and crossing the placenta which separates maternal and fetal circulation, or (2) ascending the maternal genitourinary tact and entering the uterus. Only two bacterial species are commonly found to cross the placenta and infect the fetus: Listeria monocytogenes and Treponema pallidum subsp. pallidum. L. monocytogenes is a Gram-positive, foodborne

Influenza A virus is a respiratory pathogen that is responsible for regular epidemics and occasional pandemics that result in substantial damage to life and the economy. The yearly reformulation of trivalent or quadrivalent flu vaccines encompassing surface glycoproteins derived from the current circulating strains of the virus does not provide sufficient cross-protection against mismatched strains. Unlike the current vaccines that elicit a predominant humoral response, vaccines that induce CD8+ T cells have demonstrated a capacity to provide cross-protection against different influenza strain

Repeated infections with endemic human coronaviruses (hCoV) are thought to reflect lack of long-lasting protective immunity. We evaluated circulating human CD4 T cells collected prior to 2020 for reactivity towards hCoV spike proteins, probing for the ability to produce interferon-γ, interleukin-2, or granzyme B. We found robust reactivity to spike-derived epitopes, comparable to influenza, but highly variable abundance and functional potential across subjects, depending on age and viral antigen specificity. To explore potential of these memory cells to be recruited in severe acute respiratory

Dengue is an increasingly important cause of morbidity and mortality in the tropics, but vaccine development has been impeded by a poor understanding of disease pathogenesis and, in particular, of immunologic enhancement. In a large case-control study of Vietnamese patients with dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF), variation at the HLA-A locus was significantly associated with susceptibility to DHF (P=.02), and specific HLA-A susceptibility and resistance alleles were identified. HLA-A-specific epitopes were predicted from binding motifs, and ELISPOT analyses of patients with DHF revealed high freq

Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) is one of the leading causes of epidemic encephalitis in South Asian countries. Due to the short-term viremia, detecting IgM antibodies by ELISA is treated as the front-line diagnostic assay. Co-circulation and multiple exposures to antigenically cross-reactive flaviviruses in India pose a challenge in serodiagnosis. Replacing the whole virus antigen currently used in the JE IgM detection kits (ELISA) may improve the specificity and sensitivity of the existing JE MAC ELISA kits. For this purpose, we developed a stably transfected cell clone, BHK-IE6, which exp
